To change my username often?

Christmasfairywish · 11/12/2022 05:32

Been a regular on MN for some time now. And changed my username loads… Literally whenever I feel I have shared too much or someone might put two and two together who I know in RL, I change it.

Just wondering if this is normal practice on here, how often is the norm to change username and AIBU if I keep changing it?

Been here since 2018. Bet I've changed weekly on average.

Pain in the arse if a thread you've been on is revisited and you have to keep changing your username each time you post on it.

You know that you can just type any of your previous usernames into the "add your message here" box and the post will appear under that name.

Not useful if you want a whole new name change, but handy if you are on a previous thread under a different name.

RegularNameChangerVersion21 · 11/12/2022 15:04

Nope, definitely not. I've got nothing to hide...........

DramaAlpaca · 11/12/2022 15:06

I've stuck mainly with this one for years, but have other usernames for posting anything sensitive - though I rarely do.

mamabear715 · 11/12/2022 15:07

Not changed it once. Cba looking to see if thisposter & thatposter are the same person, life's too short. If you know me, you know me.. so nothing is a lie, & if it's embarrassing, I've probably told everyone already anyway!
I just don't take myself that seriously.

Reugny · 11/12/2022 15:08

I change mine when a newspaper has quoted one of my posts. Other posters do that to.

Swissnotswiss · 11/12/2022 15:09

I wish mumsnet would remind you what name you have used on particular threads. There are some longrunning threads where I can't remember who I am.😂

Deadringer · 11/12/2022 15:09

I have had the same user name since i joined about 8/9 years ago. I only name changed once when I was seeking advice for something quite personal, then I changed back.

StopStartStop · 11/12/2022 15:10

Ten years here. Far more names than you can possibly imagine.

Yeah that's what I mean, it's that that I find a pain. I'd love it if it defaulted to thr last username you used on a thread.

Weird

FernsAreFab · 11/12/2022 15:16

I change mine at least weekly when I’m here, sometimes I don’t post for a while though.

Been here since 2004 under different registrations. Was in the Daily Fail once.

I never post photos.

PeskyYeti · 11/12/2022 15:16

Same here. I use a random username generator to get names like this.

Itwasntevenblackpudding · 11/12/2022 15:21

@DisneyPrincesss

Oh, I see what you mean then! - I only found this out relatively recently.

@Swissnotswiss Aren't your posts in a different colour from the rest of the thread? Mine are, even if it is a different username to my current one.

Swissnotswiss · 11/12/2022 15:25

@Itwasntevenblackpudding Yes, but sometimes the thread is 20 pages long!

Itwasntevenblackpudding · 11/12/2022 15:29

@Swissnotswiss

I'd forgotten about the faff of "pages"

Since the revamp of the site earlier this year, I now have all the posts on one page.

It was never an option before but a little toggle button appeared in my settings.

Don't tell anyone though in case they take it away again

Sparklingbrook · 11/12/2022 15:31

I think it’s the norm now.

I don’t. That’s just my choice but I don’t share lots of ultra personal stuff and I’m not too bothered if someone works out who I am in RL or trawls my posting history (both have happened).

If I thought I needed to name change to post something then I wouldn’t post it. It helps to keep things in check.

I don’t blame anyone for namechanging unless they’re doing it to bitchplop or troll.

Swissnotswiss · 11/12/2022 15:35

@Itwasntevenblackpudding (whispers) thank you!!😀

Itwasntevenblackpudding · 11/12/2022 15:59

You're welcome @Swissnotswiss

I'll have to bloody name change now in case they find me and take it away 😜

Nope, definitely not. I've got nothing to hide...........

It's more about the people who got doxxed rather than having anything to hide. It was awful for them.

Iknowhim · 11/12/2022 16:37

I do it all the time. I worry so much about being recognised.
Partly because of private stuff but also as I'd be mortified if my friends new I was on mumsnet. 😄

MintyGreenDreams · 11/12/2022 16:40

I only change mine if I get my arse handed to me on aibu.Im a wuss.

XanaduKira · 11/12/2022 16:42

Love the honesty @MintyGreenDreams Grin

Was that during the hacking in 2015?

PopcornAndPeanutsAndChocolateAndTea · 11/12/2022 16:43

I change mine frequently

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 11/12/2022 16:47

I've changed mine if there's been a security leak but don't change it much otherwise.

I actually think knowing it's so easy to name change on here has made me more cynical about replying because it makes trolling so much easier. And you don't know if it's a first post or a name change post. If an OP has a name change fail in the middle of their own thread it makes me suspicious of them, rightly or wrongly.
