To ask how you are supposed to clean a toilet…

Without a toilet brush?!

(NOT A POO TROLL! Long time member, name change a plenty though)

I get that in your own home, you can use gloves/cloths etc. But in public toilets/other people’s houses, how on earth are you supposed to clean up after yourself without a brush? It’s wildly obvious if you go into a toilet in a small cafe or something that it was you who left the mess!

And no, not pooing outside of your own home ever is not a sensible decision.

Drop a wad of toilet paper down the loo before you crap. That way you shouldn’t leave any skids!
doesn’t everyone do this all the time anyway?

ProserpinaProserpina · 09/12/2022 10:35

I worry the paper would block the toilet! đŸ˜‚

I find a pound of Semtex tends to be a good solution.
Saves on cleaning the bathroom too, being as you won't have one left to clean.

This. A long sheet folded and placed atop the water and kind of down the front/back of pan.
Masks a sploosh too in cubicles. Doesn't block.
Christ what has my life come to that I'm offering this advice on a public forum..Grin

But what about limescale?! I use limescale remover, but to get it properly clean it still needs a bit of a scrub to remove loosened limescale. We're in a very hard water area.

Thelnebriati · 09/12/2022 11:53

MangoBiscuit I used to live in a hard water area and had to drop a Steradent tablet into the bowl every night.

Very hard water area here. Periodically, wearing a surgical glove, I scrub the limescale with a green scourer that has been used for washing up but is destined for the bin. Then I bag up both the glove and the scourer in a small poly bag and bin them - so I don't need to touch the scourer at all with bare hands.

I ought to try the Steradent method, too.

Thelnebriati · 09/12/2022 12:33

It works best if you start with a clean loo though.
I once moved into a place where the limescale was so bad I had to chip it off with a butter knife and it came off in chunks Xmas Envy

I use the 'Bloo' thing - either drop a tablet in the cistern, or have the kind you can hang inside the loo. Seems to work for me.

Snowisfallinghere · 09/12/2022 12:50

Wipe/scrub the mess away with a scrunched up wad of loo roll, wadded thickly enough that nothing can get through the loo roll to your ungloved hand. Flush and repeat if necessary. Obviously still wash hands extra thoroughly afterwards.

PrincessofWellies · 09/12/2022 12:51

You can get a device that you drop in the cistern and it prevents limescale forming. I use them in all my rentals, I spent hours getting limescale off toilets before using these. They work the same way as a sacrificial annode on a boat!

Stay single and don't have kids is my best advice, my loo was lovely and clean when I lived on my own!

ShirleyPhallus · 09/12/2022 12:55

Everyone on MN replaces their toilet weekly just to be sure it’s completely clean surely?

glamourousindierockandroll · 09/12/2022 13:05

I agree that there should be more toilet brushes in shared toilets OP. I get why they're not in v public places like shopping centres but in workplaces they do help to keep them looking acceptable.

BaconMassive · 09/12/2022 13:15

I bought a multipack of kitchen scrubbing brushes 10 for £4.99, I carry a clean unused one around with me to deal with such scenarios and just bin it after the event.

Ittybittytittycomittee · 09/12/2022 13:26

I run a cleaning business and you'll be surprised at just how many people don't own a loo brush. Sometimes there's nothing I can do other than to put loo cleaner down and leave it.

BiscuitLover3678 · 09/12/2022 13:27

Whataaa people put toilet paper down before? What a waste! Also won’t that block it up?

Tripsabroad · 09/12/2022 13:29

I have never heard of using loo roll to line the bowl!

Tbh, I just do my business without worrying about it and if there's no brush too bad. They should learn from this and supply one in future!

What are these called?

If it is those magnets, don't bother. They don't work.

Antaboo · 09/12/2022 14:43

Surely you never leave home without a loo brush?

Only weekly! How slovenly.

We knock the whole bathroom down and replace everything every 3 days just to be on the safe side.

Of course that leaves us the problem of having builders permanently in the house who also need the toilet so we let them have a bucket in the back garden. The bucket either gets buried or set on fire.
