Am I being unreasonable in hating these articles by journalists who are just showing off their families?

articles like this just make me want to chunder. Does her family really want to be paraded about like this? Isn't it just a bit weird?

Sorry but there seem to be all these 30 something 40 something women journalists who can't do anything except write dull lightweight pieces of family journalistic bragging.
Yuck.

It's a nothing article about nothing - a piece of not-especially-well-written whimsy - why get so riled?

Although why do people have to be taught everything nowadays? Schools for everything. Why can't people just learn things? Or maybe that's another thread.

I find the family in Junior magaxine irritating too. Find most things irritating in Junior, but I like the calendar of what's on in London....

That "article" about what some rich idiots buy for their children to wear - hilarious.

Surprised at the Guardian for running it though.

Observer Woman has caused me to give up buying the Observer.

"look at these pretty pictures of handbags while we tell you all about hating your body and then when you're all confused and a bit miserable, we'll show you some photos of pretty celebrities and then we'll talk about botox and plastic surgery and how absolutely lovely it is"

People buy these things, though, don't they? In 2008 thre is much more interest in that side of things than what women were interested in in the 1970s which is a pity. Too many housewives. Too many men and women pushing little girls into fantasising about weddings and being housewives of men. Too much TV and pushing of a culture where women are there to be used as play things of men.

YABU.

Tons of articles in papers that dont appeal to me, I dont read them. Why it annoys you - I really cannot understand. Her family, her choice. And for all those who say they feel sorry for her husband. Why? I am sure if he didnt want to feature - he wouldnt. End of.

Also - what is wrong with living in Muswell Hill, Clapham etc and being an Oxbridge graduate? My god - what a crime against humanity. They should be shot on sight . FGS.

YANBU

I find the guardian and observer increasingly hard to take and so the only "family" column that I genuinely enjoy is Fiona Gibson's column "homefront" in the (Glasgow)Sunday Herald. It is down to earth and real and ,obviously, without metropolitan bias. Incidentally, she used to work for "Jackie" magazine which should mean something to any of you between 35 and 45. Showing off is still (mostly) frowned upon up here in presbyterian land but I fear it is growing apace. I used to live in London and remember with shame the feeling that nothing worthwhile happens outside the M25. How the scales have fallen from my eyes now that I have three kids.

I nominate Vulgar's comment as the new strapline for the Observer:

'I just can't bear it, but the voices make me read it'

I have to say that the hardest thing of the lot to give up when our income dropped was the papers, and not the News but exactly this sort of crappy stuff. So hard, in fact, that we have not managed to give them up entirely.

Surely, Xenia, there were more housewives in the 70s than there are now? I can't think that's a reason why there is more rubbish in the papers. Surely more about the logic of consumerism and capitalism - needing to sell more stuff to more people, and getting more people to value themselves more on what they buy, and to put a value on who they are?
