AIBU to save bacon from being used by sprouts

Bacon's Christmas home is around another meat. Or at worst by itself.

It is NOT bacon's job to disguise the taste of sprouts. Bacon is not responsible for sprouts and should not be used this way. "Oh you don't like sprouts, that's simply because you haven't fried them with bacon and......"

Don't listen to the sprout industry that is all too prevalent on MN and many other places. Let bacon do what it was born to do.

That is all.

Bacon is indeed delicious and best served between a couple of slices of white bread with tomato sauce. However... In this season of love and good will I think you ought to allow bacon to do its charitable duty of making otherwise inedible bitter green balls of evil into something that can be forced down with a polite smile when your mother in law piles them on your plate.

@SittingontheSidelines slight derailment here... have you tried sausages with marmalade? Very nice! And any bacon fat left over when trying bacon, make fried bread with it and spread with marmalade. If you want to make it slightly healthier spread bread with bacon fat and then toast rather than frying the bread in the fat. (Note... No Brussels sprouts!)

@TheGuv1982 There is no reason at all why putting bacon in with the sprouts should reduce the amount of bacon with the turkey!. Surely you would just more bacon! There is no such thing as an excess of bacon.

I love bacon and sprouts, but I don't want them together. Christmas lunch involves lots of rich meaty stuff. The sprouts and other unadulterated green veg provide a welcome contrast.

SittingontheSidelines · 07/12/2022 16:43

@DilemmaDelilah no I haven't send I'll be trying them and the fried bread. Thanks.

Someone disparaged cauliflower but cauliflower roasted with pepperoni is divine.

Steam sprouts until they are bright green - then drain and toss in ranch dressing.

I think you meant to say "then drain and toss in the bin"!

Sprouts without yukky bacon for me.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 07/12/2022 21:17

If bacon and sprouts were such a great combination then people would add sprouts to their bacon sandwiches. They don't. They add ketchup or brown sauce. Never have I been offered a bacon and sprout sandwich and I've never seen one on a menu either.

Well that will be my xmas day sambo now. Thanks for the idea!

Igglepiggleslittletoe · 07/12/2022 21:26

Fresh white bread, gravy rubbed on both sides, ham, sliced sprouts and stuffing. I can almost taste it now.

Happy Christmas all. Don't let the green things sully that bacon!

Sprouts are delicious. If you don't want to use your bacon, parboil for a minute or two before halving and then fry them in some garlic oil until slightly charred. Almost at the end of cooking, stir in some honey and Marmite and you're good to go. 👍

Good thinking. Then nobody will know if the horrible taste is due to the marmite or sprouts.

Clever thinking from you sprout defenders.

Steamed sprouts are best, plain and simple, without trying to disguise lovely sprout flavours

mondaytosunday · 25/12/2022 11:46

Love sprouts! Usually just cooked on their own. My kids would never forgive me if we didn't have them!

Isseywith3witchycats · 25/12/2022 12:29

Bacon on Christmas day is strictly for the full English breakfast that will do us till dinner and small amount wrapped round chipolata sausages for the pigs in blankets on the main meal sprouts cooked properly are perfectly nice without any adornments
