AIBU to save bacon from being used by sprouts

Bacon's Christmas home is around another meat. Or at worst by itself.

It is NOT bacon's job to disguise the taste of sprouts. Bacon is not responsible for sprouts and should not be used this way. "Oh you don't like sprouts, that's simply because you haven't fried them with bacon and......"

Don't listen to the sprout industry that is all too prevalent on MN and many other places. Let bacon do what it was born to do.

That is all.

I love bacon. I love spouts. Match made in heaven.

LBFseBrom · 07/12/2022 02:56

Bury sprouts in compost bin. Actually, they may come back to life. Cremate the fuckers.

Cremate them with balsamic, Parmesan and nuts. Mmmmmmm.

Actually, the issue is genetics. Brassicas, including sprouts, are a combination of sharp and bitter. People who like the soft, pathetic sweet and salty, bless them, aren't evolved enough to enjoy sprouts. Interestingly, bitter-love is associated with psychoticism, so I suggest you don't piss off your sprout-loving friends and family.

Sprouts are good for you:

It is well known that consumption of Brassica vegetables has beneficial effect on human's health. The greatest interest is focused on glucosinolates and their hydrolysis products isothiocyanates, due to their potential as cancer preventing compounds. Brassica vegetables are also rich in flavor compounds belonging to many chemical groups. The main sensory sensation related to these vegetable is their characteristic sharp and bitter taste, and unique aroma. Because of these features this group of vegetables is often rejected by consumers. Interestingly, for some people unpleasant sensations are not perceived, suggesting a potential role of inter-individual variability in bitter taste perception and sensibility. Receptors responsible for bitter sensation with the emphasis on Brassica are reviewed, as well as genetic predisposition for bitterness perception by consumers. Also the role of glucosinolates and isothiocyanates as compounds responsible for bitter taste is discussed based on data from the field of food science and molecular biology. Isothiocyanates are shown in broaded context of flavor compounds also contributing to the aroma of Brassica vegetables.

Us sprout lovers will fight cancer while being psychotic. We're proper classy.

On a different note, my DH says we are asking too much of beets. Salads, side dishes, alongside roasts, even in drinks lately. I suppose he has a point.

Sprouts are lush without adornments.

Exactly! I don't know why people have them, if they don't Like them though.

HerRoyalNotness · 07/12/2022 04:09

Sprouts made me dry retch. Then as an adult I could tolerate them sliced and sautéed with chestnuts or bacon, or even roasted. That only lasted a few years and now they upset my stomach so back in the bin they go.

ShirleyPhallus · 07/12/2022 04:22

Greens go really well with fat and acid. So any combo of that with sprouts is bloody delicious (ie Parmesan , pine nuts and balsamic / bacon, Red onion, white wine vinegar)

Ericaequites · 07/12/2022 04:50

There are people who aren’t vegan or vegetarian who don’t like bacon. Then again, my late father was a omnivore who didn’t realize bacon counted as meat.

It's good to get a good read on what proportion of MN can be trusted to give a sensible opinion.

That proportion is currently 32%

Sprouts are balls of fart, like how cauliflowers are actual solid clouds of fart. Why anybody would think bacon would help the situation is beyond me.

As a PP said, Big Sprout must have a lot of friends in very high places.

abblie · 07/12/2022 07:07

Are you insane !! Bacon and Brussels sprouts is an absolute must on the Christmas Dinner plate omg my mouth is watering thinking of it and I lobe Brussels without the bacon but with oh my its devine

TheGuv1982 · 07/12/2022 07:51

I love sprouts, and even then, bacon in with the sprouts would leave less bacon to go on the Turkey. If there is the spirit of Christmas, it’s embodied in the bacon that keeps the Turkey *moist

*does it really though? I think it’s just a scam by big bacon, and it’s one I can fully get behind

WondrousWinger · 07/12/2022 07:55

Yabu.

Bacon doesn't cover the taste of sprouts, it complements it.

Garlic sprouts with bacon is food of the gods.

gaf · 07/12/2022 07:55

Totally with you on this OP.

Oh you don't like sprouts, that's simply because you haven't fried them with bacon and......

Oh god, how boring is this line!! Why is it whenever you tell anyone you don’t like sprouts this line gets pulled out. Clearly if you have to hide the taste of sprouts with bacon then you can’t like them much either. Although I’d argue you can’t hide their disgusting musty taste.

I like both - but not together.

My position, in a nutshell. (Which reminds me - no need for chestnuts with sprouts either.)

That sounds rather high to me. I'm not sure your methods are accurate.

Ifailed · 07/12/2022 08:08

The mistake is confusing bacon and pancetta, if you must you use the latter with sprouts.

FavouriteDogMug · 07/12/2022 08:08

My preferred bacon usage for Christmas dinner is pigs in blankets and leave the sprouts plain for my vegetarian dd (she won't eat them either).

I'm with you ComtesseDeSpair, love sprouts, hate bacon!

MNHQ please ban these trolls

DailyMailReporterTellMeAllYourSecrets · 07/12/2022 08:16

Sprouts 🤮 🤮

rookiemere · 07/12/2022 08:28

Could be worse. DH and DSIL are of Latvian descent and steal my lovely crispy bacon for their ghastly sauerkraut. I'm wise to them now and cook an extra batch.

Vinylloving · 07/12/2022 08:41

Sprouts with orange and ginger is great. Festive, lifts the flavours without overwhelming it

Sprouttreesareamazing · 07/12/2022 08:48

I feel insulted
..

Rockersversuswalter · 07/12/2022 09:18

Can I have User's sprouts, Mum?

Sprouttreesareamazing · 07/12/2022 09:41
