When every appliance in the house keeps going wrong

Is this a bit weird?
The last few weeks/month, it’s been one thing after another in the house.
The WiFi stopped working and was down for a while on and off so was quite frustrating, then the tv just lost its picture and we had to put it in and wait for it to be repaired, so were without tv and internet got a while. Then the washing machine went kaput and we needed to buy another one. Now, a couple of days ago after storms, the electricity keeps tripping off and has blown out a couple of lights in the house, it’s like we can’t have too many things on at once.
Has anyone had this happen, one thing after another in the house, but major disaster on the scale of things in the world, just annoying inconveniences (and cost!) and just a bit ‘What now?!’ 🤷🏻‍♀️

Did you move in and buy all these items within a short time frame? If so, it’s a known phenomena and we tend to forget that we bought everything in the same year - and then are surprised when they expire in a short time frame together. (Hand up guilty of this until I was reminded!)

My fridge freezer, washing machine, hob, cooker and dishwasher all went wrong within the space of about 12 months. When the hob and oven were on their last legs we looked into getting a new kitchen - our new kitchen is now full of lovely new appliances and we hope not to buy any more for a few years!

@Alphabet1spaghetti2 No, the tv is fairly new and the washing machine too, couple of years ago. I can see that being the case if so, but it’s so random

We also seem to be losing so many things, I’m so on top of things normally, just seems weird…!

So both bought failrly recently close together. Could be just a coincidence, could be due to the seemingly increasingly poor build quality of appliances which in turn results in shorter life spans of the equipment. Or could be something shorting or causing a power surge in your home.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 06/12/2022 18:52

Re reading your op, I wonder if it’s a combination of coincidence and maybe some storm damage to the electrical supply?

Cheesybeansgonecold · 06/12/2022 18:54

@Alphabet1spaghetti2 We were wondering that, do we call our electricity provider? Do they sort that or do you have to shell out on calling an electrician?
The electricity box is outside and was open and Dh thinks water may have got in

Our white goods all entered a suicide pact and failed over a 3 month period: freezer, cooker, fridge and washing machine.

Same, we replaced every appliance apart from the kettle and the toaster. We both know that they’ll all go at the same time though.

I would call out an electrician first. Anything before the mains box is down to the energy supplier for your area, anything after is an electricians responsibility to repair. Eg we need a new earth, eon (responsible for our supply area) attached a new earth to our fuse box, but it has to be connected by our electrician. Confused?! Yes so are we!!!
so call an electrician out first, they will be able to advise on course if action if needed, and secure that outside box against the weather. Water and electricity are not good bedfellows.

We've had a lot of flickering lights recently and then the (new) toaster tripped all the power when in use for a few days. Today my hairdryer blew up mid use, only a year old. Broadband and TV keep resetting as though there has been a power cut.

CloseYourMouthLynn · 06/12/2022 19:32

This is happening to us! Car had to be replaced(not household, but expensive), washing machine door has broken, tumble dryer turning off and on all the time and cutting out and the Dyson battery has died. All in the space of a month 😬. I thought I'd something to anger the appliance gods.

When our internet was being dodgy the tv stopped working. As the Sky box didn't have the right amount of internet it just made the screen black. Very odd
