To expect no-outdoor-shoe households to provide slippers?

Just that - slides, or foot covers of some kind. Of course, if you know in advance it's different, but when you turn up for the first time at someone's house to be told "please take off outdoor shoes" at the door (which is reasonable, we all get to decide what happens in our own homes), surely something should be provided rather than expect visitors to pad about in bare feet, or socks.

What do the no shoe people do about the smelly footed people? In all fairne4ss some people's feet STINK no matter how clean they are.

I'd rather just wear my socks than some slippers that had been worn by god knows how many people before me. Yuck.

This

diddl · 06/12/2022 15:44

It's so much easier if you live somewhere where it's the norm!

That said, I tend to be more bothered about someone taking obviously dirty shoes or walking type boots/shoes off.

superdupernova · 06/12/2022 15:44

I find it awkward during summer when I'm less likely to be wearing socks. I don't like my feet and don't want to be walking around barefoot.

3peassuit · 06/12/2022 15:44

I pop my fold up slippers in my bag when I go visiting.

Op hasn’t elaborated on a cleaning schedule for the communal slippers, presumably there isn’t one. Maybe just a bucket of slippers

Eh? They don't need a schedule. You just chuck them in the laundry basket after the guests have gone home and they go into the next wash like everything else. It's really not hard.

Freddosforall · 06/12/2022 15:45

I always take my shoes off when I go to other people's houses and just wear my socks. People do the same when they come to mine. That seems to be the norm. I'm never asked to take my shoes off and I never ask others to do it. It's just what happens. I wouldn't complain if they kept their shoes on, but they never do. In summer I've started taking little slippers with me when I've just got sandals on as I hate being barefoot in other people's houses.

Given that I see people wearing their slippers to put the bins out and to pop over the road to the corner shop for milk, I'd be wary of the 'I've brought my own slippers' brigade unless the footwear has been put through @ShirleyPhallus's laundry regimen and it was filmed happening.

I have outdoor slippers! They are old and manky and live by the front door for when I need to go out to the bin or my car and can’t be bothered to find outdoor shoes. They could probably do with a wash.

Yeah the “no shoes to keep germs out” thing is superficially logical but doesn’t really stand up to scrutiny. Germs come into the house in all manner of ways and on all manner of things and I’m frankly less concerned about germs on my floor than anywhere else.

Fewer germs will come in if you’re shoes off obviously, and I always respect people’s wishes for their home, it’s just that the whole “eww gross there’s piss and spit on the pavements” thing is so naive. They wouldn’t want to know what I’ve probably just sat on during the bus ride over that’s coming in with me.

I have a leather sofa and I give it a quick wipe after guests have left.
We don’t wear shoes in the house.
Wash hands as soon as we come home.
We change in loungewear so no dirty jeans etc

Hasn't been a problem yet. If it happens I'll probably just spray some air freshener everywhere (so as not to male a thing of it), open windows if it's warm, and deal with it afterwards. I guess I assume those people know who they are and take their own precautions.

Littlepiggiesinblankets · 06/12/2022 15:47

Disinfectant shoe bath at the door mandatory for all households. Job done, everyone happy, send me my Nobel peace prize by PM.

MiniTheMinx · 06/12/2022 15:47

I don't take my shoes off in my own house, let alone other people's. Floors are for walking on, not eating off. Thankfully I don't mix with uppity aspiring hysterical people!

Goodness. That's a lot.

I take a pair of slipper socks in my bag when I visit family/friends if I think my feet will get cold.

Why would they have to give me slippers?

ColdHandsHotHead · 06/12/2022 15:50

I have IKEA slippers, they cost £1.99 a pair. They are also machine washable.

bingoitsadingo · 06/12/2022 15:50

YABU

If you can't cope with being in your socked feet inside then I think it's on you to bring slippers or an extra pair of socks when visiting people. Shoes off inside is hardly an unusual rule. I don't keep a basket of slippers lying around but I'd be happy to lend some thick socks if you said your feet were cold.

Shesasuperfreak · 06/12/2022 15:52

Only if they have carpet is it acceptable. I also need sliders for the toilet.

yes it needs a schedule , for example soon after guest departs another visitor arrives. The slippers are either unwashed, or in the wash ,is there other clean pairs available? The schedule is having clean, fresh, dry slippers available whilst the others are in the wash. It can’t just be 1 or 2 pairs as they’ll be used and need to be laundered clean and dry for next guest.

aSofaNearYou · 06/12/2022 15:53

YABU, socks are plenty

I provide a choice of plastic or material covers . Some people still refuse so they get asked to leave

Really?

So, how does that conversation go?

You must lead a very complicated life.

I've got six pairs and it's been enough so far. If I found that number insufficient to keep up with this arduous task, I'd buy more.

LynneBenfield · 06/12/2022 15:57

I have clean floors, UFH and rugs, so your bare or stockinged feet would be fine, OP.

I do expect guests to take off their outdoor shoes that have probably trodden in all manner of shite outside. I don't want that trodden in my house. No one has even moaned or decided they don't want to come back! I always take my shoes off , without being asked, in other peoples houses. I mean, why wouldn't you?

How do all the people who are revolted by shared slippers deal with bed sheets and cutlery away from home?

I presume and hope they'd be washed between users.

@KickHimInTheCrotch I agree. Perfect solution for anti social souls (like myself).

If you force yourself upon me and my house, you can take your shoes off.

@KickHimInTheCrotch nothing to say except I love your username 🤣
