To expect no-outdoor-shoe households to provide slippers?

pairofrollerskates · 06/12/2022 14:13

Just that - slides, or foot covers of some kind. Of course, if you know in advance it's different, but when you turn up for the first time at someone's house to be told "please take off outdoor shoes" at the door (which is reasonable, we all get to decide what happens in our own homes), surely something should be provided rather than expect visitors to pad about in bare feet, or socks.

We get it. You wash your “guest slippers”. This doesn’t mean everyone does.

And her genitals! Fancy.

Apple42 · 06/12/2022 18:26

We are a shoes off house and find it rude people who try not too take them off , they are then asked. In fact when I was childminding and I was interviewing new families they automatically lost the space if they did not take there shoes as I saw as it disrespectful.

Making the point that if you trust someone enough to eat, drink and sleep at their house, there's really no reason to come over all terrified about the house slippers.

It's fine not to want to wear them. It's fine to bring your own. In my house, it's fine to go in socks or barefoot, I don't care.

But it's just daft to imagine that the kitchen's clean, the cutlery's clean, the bedsheets are clean, the towels are clean, but the house slippers will be a health hazard because they must be left festering guest after guest after guest.

We don't do this, guys. If we wash the sheets and the cutlery and everything else, we wash the slippers too.

(And now of course some smartarse is going to pop up to tell me her MIL runs a house that has its own hazmat suit but they got beriberi from the house slippers or whatever.)

It wasn’t a very well made point because slippers (which I have never heard of anyone washing, and seemingly nor have many others on this thread, including those using single use disposable slippers or covers) are not comparable to cutlery. Cutlery is washed after every use as standard, and is communal rather than belonging to one person. Footwear is rather different. To most people anyway. Apparently not you.

And no one said they’re a health hazard, I don’t believe. Sharing footwear just isn’t a thing to most people.

If we are going to go into outlandish comments about being chucked down chutes and what might happen, its better done regarding those who seem to think something bad will happen if they allow their guests to be comfortable and have the option to wear shoes inside.

So what about when you go somewhere for the first time - do you always carry slippers in your bag just in case?

i wear slippers in my own home because they are more cosy but if I need to go outside (to the bin/washing line) and I'm in my slippers then I go outside in them!!! I'm fairly old and have lived most of my life among people who are OK woth shoes indoors and guess what....we know tonwipe our feet on the doormat and none of us have gone down with horrible shoe borne illnesses! Our crawling kids survived too.

And while I wouldn't be rude enough to march in wearing shoes if I have been asked to remove them, I would think they were rude for demanding that a visitor does.

No I don’t take my slippers with me. I am polite enough to follow the rules somebody else has in their own home. If it’s a no shoes home I just wear my socks.

What it comes down to is that any house, whatever its state, will be cleaner if outdoor shoes aren't worn indoors than if they are. Doesn't mean shoes-on houses are all intolerably filthy and horrible, but it's just a fact: if you don't wear shoes that can track mud around while inside, it'll be that much cleaner than if you do. Or at the very least, it'll require less work to stay that way.

Some people prefer to wear shoes indoors. Fine, their house their choice. But some of them don't like to accept that, at the very least, this means they need to do more cleaning to keep it to the cleanliness level it would have if they didn't.

So they have to tell us that slippers are the one thing a normal person couldn't possibly manage to keep clean, that it requires a "system" or schedule, that it's just unspeakably disgusting, that you can't trust your hosts with slippers even if the forks and sheets are fine, that it's a sign that you're a horrible social climber, etc etc etc. Anything other than "yeah, I do have to sweep a bit more but I just prefer it."

It's total lunacy. Nobody actually thinks this way. But I agree with PPs that it's quite funny. These threads are always good. Glad to play my part.

Oh. A happy accident, clearly!

Although I shall bank that as a nifty bit of trivia 😁

Runmybathforme · 06/12/2022 18:37

I always ask when I go into someone's home for the first time if they want me to remove my shoes. I do wonder how we all stayed alive before shoe removal became a 'thing'. As far as I'm aware, families didn't die across the land because of shoes germs. You were expected to vigorously wipe your feet on the doormat provided.

BonnesVacances · 06/12/2022 18:41

Ok to walk around in socks if the person whose house it is also does that. I object to wearing socks if they're wearing warm cosy slippers which means they know it's cold underfoot. That's just rude!

I regularly visit a house where they give me a pair of slippers to wear because in their words "it's cold". I don't mind. I don't think I'm quite at the stage of taking my own slippers for a day visit. I'd definitely take them for an overnight stay (and am at the stage of taking my own tea bags too!)

MolkosTeenageAngst · 06/12/2022 18:51

I keep a pair of slippers in the car, I would never assume I could keep my shoes on when visiting someone else and so as I hate being in socked feet I feel the onus is on me to be prepared with something to wear if I need to remove my shoes.

MajorCarolDanvers · 06/12/2022 18:52

Just wear your socks like a normal person.

Wexone · 06/12/2022 18:54

@Chocolateandcherries how on earth is wearing jeans filthy compared to other items of clothing. I wear jeans most days as they are warm and i am one of those freaks who think they are comfortable
On a whole this baffles me completely, I live in Ireland and i know of no one who asks you take your shoes off in the house when visiting nor seen people not wearing shoes in their houses. I have visited a few in the past few weeks and it never entered in my head at all. Currently sitting here in my hi tops at the mo at my computer. I have been to the dentist and walked around the supermarket for an hour plus drove in them on the way home. They will stay on me till i go to bed. And they are stored (which i having just read this today is another horrific disgusting to do seemingly- shock of all horrors) Himself wears shoes the whole time as he has bad circualtion if he walsk in socks or bare feet his feet go blue with the cold. Also another friend of mine broke her jaw slipping on wooden floors one night in her tights. As people say you have doormats to wipe your feet .

TruckerBarbie · 06/12/2022 19:06

Oh, the sheer inhumanity of being made to walk on carpet wearing only your socks. 😂😂😂

For a lot of people this is standard. I wouldn't say the vast majority of people slide straight into their slippers when getting home.

Yes.

Footwear doesn’t generally go in the washing machine. Most slippers have rubber soles, or at least the ones I’ve ever worn.

You have never heard of anyone washing slippers? Even though they've usually got washing instructions in the product descriptions and often on the labels? You didn't know many slippers are machine washable? Not all of them, true, but many are and those are the ones you'd use as guest slippers.

Well, look. If you trust us enough to prepare your food, use our cutlery, sleep on our sheets and use our towels - if you can trust our hygiene that far - please be assured that you can trust us with the slippers too. You might prefer not to wear them, that's fine, but if we've got a basket of guest slippers on offer, then please trust that we've heard of washing them and we chose them with washing in mind.

A lot of slippers, including ones with rubber soles can go in the washer. In fact, I specifically look out for machine washable ones with rubber soles Because I’ve got two kids under the age of two and so regularly end up with milky sick or other less pleasant things on them! I just purchased some that can be washed that are nana de in the UK and made with lambswool. I will wash at 30 with a special cleaner but they will certainly be washed, many times across their lifetime.

In fairness, I’ve never had a conversation with people about their slippers and if they wash them or not. So maybe other people do. The ones I like to wear are furry inside and have a rubber sole and can’t be washed.

I’m still not buying the cutlery analogy though. Washing cutlery and washing footwear is totally different. It doesn’t follow from the fact someone washes cutlery that they machine wash their footwear.

i clean the outside but not washed them in a washing machine no! Wouldn’t it ruin the leather?

We're not talking about washing "footwear", we're talking about washing guest slippers. They're slippers available to anyone who visits. Of course we're going to wash them between people, just like we'll wash the bedsheets and towels. Plenty of slippers are machine washable!

Why do so many people assume we wouldn't? If you assume the towels and sheets are washed, why wouldn't these be?

TirisfalPumpkin · 06/12/2022 19:40

I’m weird enough to bring my slippers if visiting an unfamiliar house. I’m not sitting there all night in socks with uncomfortably freezing feet. German style haus schuhe are great but impractical if you need to maintain a guest rack in multiple sizes.

my sister in law provided slipper socks when I last visited them - they have a cream-carpeted rental flat and their no shoe policy is understandable. I felt that was wonderfully hospitable and welcoming.

footwear (and slippers are worn on the feet and are footwear whether you like it or not) I not generally shared and used by different people in the way towels and bed sheets - and bloody cutlery - is. If you wash slippers, fine. If you think it should be obvious to other people that you wash them, then also fine. It is not the same thing as the other items you mention.

I sometimes visit shoes off households, and have even occasionally been to some with shoe covers. Never been offered slippers in over 3 decades. The concept of communal, washable slippers for guests is totally new to me.

ChristmasJoysuckers · 06/12/2022 19:48

Depends on how warm and comfortable the house is because I don't really want to take my shoes off nor do I want to wear someone else's footwear.

Personally I can't understand why shoes off cant be hospitable and allow guest's to wear shoes if they want.
