To expect no-outdoor-shoe households to provide slippers?

Just that - slides, or foot covers of some kind. Of course, if you know in advance it's different, but when you turn up for the first time at someone's house to be told "please take off outdoor shoes" at the door (which is reasonable, we all get to decide what happens in our own homes), surely something should be provided rather than expect visitors to pad about in bare feet, or socks.

I haven’t read the whole thread but there is a simple solution to this - if you don’t like taking your shoes off in a no outdoor shoe home, don’t visit them - then everyone will be happy.
No, I don’t think you should expect them to provide slippers, if you don’t like their rule either take your own slippers or wear thick socks.
Just don’t be the type of person I’ve encountered who is told there is a no outdoor shoe rule and then says “my shoes are clean” and walks in anyway.

I don’t think it is 99% of people. I think there seem to be plenty of shoes on houses and shoes off houses judging by MN. The vast majority of houses I go to people seem to wear shoes. Other people seem to have a different experience.

Im wondering if perhaps people are in other countries to the UK. Everyone takes shoes off here I know. Perhaps its less the done thing if they live with cold tiled floors that are washed down all the time anyway. I couldn’t walk on someones carpet in my shoes, would feel awful.

radrado · 06/12/2022 17:29

Nope @Hellybelly84 we are UK. People are different even within our country you know - is your mind blown? 😆

Blossomtoes · 06/12/2022 17:30

UK here too. Sorry to disappoint you @Hellybelly84.

So what if someone refuses to let you in?
I give everyone (workmen, midwife, health visitor etc) those blue shoe covers and have never had someone refuse.

Well tbh I am never professionally visiting someone for my own benefit, so if they don't let me in its their loss! Proper shoes are part of personal protective equipment and I'm not about to risk my health for someone elses carpets. But of course in practice no one has ever refused to let me in.

MarvelMrs · 06/12/2022 17:31

If you are a princess maybe.
Please tell me you are joking….

Mind is blown that its even a conversation to be honest. We teach kids from nursery age ‘shoes and coat on at the door when your ready to go out’.

Bywayofanupdate · 06/12/2022 17:32

Should we keep a pair of just in case slippers in every size?

Suzi888 · 06/12/2022 17:33

I have slippers 😝😂. Take your shoes off or do t come in- I’m easy!

Should we keep a pair of just in case slippers in every size?

Yes six pair ,that’ll do it

greenhousegal · 06/12/2022 17:34

Compartment in the nappy bag for all the slippers needed for a family visit to the shoeless house. Baby is exempt.

LOL.

PrinnyPree · 06/12/2022 17:34

I always assume I'll be taking my outside shoes off when I go to someones house. I'd bring slippers if it bothered me to walk around in socks.

Tiredalwaystired · 06/12/2022 17:36

Totally unreasonable. Do you expect them to have a wide range of sizes just in case?

socks or barefoot is absolutely fine. If you’re worried, keep some slippers in your bag.

midgetastic · 06/12/2022 17:37

If it bothers you , take your own slippers

It's more hygienic than sharing a pair between lots of people surely ?

Dreamsoffreedomjoyandpeace · 06/12/2022 17:37

I don’t like it if it’s a party/get-together because I go from petite but not abnormally so, to about a foot shorter than everyone else!

onlymyOP · 06/12/2022 17:38

It's courteous to provide disposable over shoe covers (which we do) or we're just as happy if people wear socks if they want to...I couldn't think of anything worse than communal slippers.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 06/12/2022 17:38

With one very rare exception, I just don’t go to houses where I’m expected to take shoes off. Especially in winter, I definitely need something besides socks, and I don’t want to wear manky old communal slippers, thanks. Yes, I know I could take my own, but I’d most likely forget to.

MrsR87 · 06/12/2022 17:41

We are a no shoes indoor household (Uk) and I personally find it weird when I visit people’s houses and people are wearing shoes and most of my family fall into that category! Indeed, I grew up wearing shoes indoors!

I do actually have a basket of individually wrapped spa type slippers in my guest room (more for relatives that stay for multiple days and may have forgotten their slippers) but I always offer them to someone when the visit my house for the first time.

EhLov · 06/12/2022 17:43

What's so bad about walking round someone's house in your socks? Is it because it's cold? Or grubby? It's only the bottoms of your feet?

greenhousegal · 06/12/2022 17:43

Message is... my carpet is more important than you.

RosesAndHellebores · 06/12/2022 17:44

We would prefer people to remove their shoes but don't insist. Most people don't venture beyond the hard floors. Tradesmen always bring shoe covers.

We have house shoes for downstairs hard floored areas. Upstairs and the drawing room are carpeted. DH and I change from our house shoes to our slippers which we keep on the little half landing at the bottom of the stairs - outside the drawing room.

At other people's houses we do as they do.

And that’s ok- because it genuinely IS 😂

Youdirtydog · 06/12/2022 17:45

I'm happy to do whatever a home owner wishes unless their house floor looks more disgusting than what might be on the soles of my shoes. I always offer to remove my shoes.

My own house however is clean. Wooden floors, washed every day. I ask people to remove their shoes because we live on a farm and outside is definitely more disgusting than in!! I work damn hard to keep my house clean, if you won't take your shoes off, you're not coming in (unless elderly/infirm).

We provide disposable plastic shoe covers. Solves all the problems really. People just carry on wearing their shoes/boots.

this is so rude.
