Sold a little musical box on Ebay, it's a little vintage wooden one. Packaged it up nicely, sent it off. I've just had a message from the buyer saying that the little tray which covers the musical mechanism was missing and she's sending it back. I know the tray was in the box - I didn't even know it was removable so I know I hadn't taken it out! I've just messaged to say that the item was exactly as described.
I have 100% positive feedback and never sell anything without describing it very carefully. Any idea what might happen next? I can not think that she's a scammer and already has a similar box without the mechanism cover, but it hardly seems worth doing what she's doing for the sake of it!

What's the feedback like on the buyer?

underneaththeash · 05/12/2022 21:21

Wait til you get it back and carefully check the photos you posted. I bet you can prove it’s a different one.

MichaelJaxon · 05/12/2022 21:22

Problem is, ebay constantly side with the buyer

Florence4170 · 05/12/2022 21:23

She's been on Ebay since 2008, 82 positive feedbacks.
I've been looking up on Ebay what to do as well. You can report an abusive buyer and this comes under that category. I have messaged saying it was exactly as described. I don't know whether to see if she reports me or to get in first! I know the little cover wasn't missing, I didn't even know you could get to the mechanism or I would have tried to dust it before selling it!

It really would be her word against mine. I can't prove the thing wasn't present when I sent it off.

You can report an abusive buyer but they will still side with them. I've stopped using ebay after I sold a high value item new in the box unopened and the buyer claimed it was opened and I had replaced the contents for old ones. I knew I 100% hadn't and unless it came from the manufacturer like that then they were liars. EBay didn't care and refunded them.

What's the feedback like on the buyer?

In my experience this doesn't matter. Once they aided with the buyer they removed my negative feedback

Florence4170 · 05/12/2022 21:36

Thanks everyone. I had an issue in the summer with some shoes I sent to click and collect. Buyer was too late collecting them and they were sent to charity as I "hadn't put a return address". I think I always put a return address on but obviously couldn't prove it. In the end Ebay refunded at no cost to me. I felt that was wrong - they had been delivered, she just didn't bother to collect in time!

Florence4170 · 05/12/2022 21:37

Anyway, nothing I can do now, is there? It's very frustrating...

OP posts:
Florence4170 · 05/12/2022 21:49

The photo she has sent is definitely the same item. But with a part missing 😙🤷‍♀️

OP posts:
Passthecheeseboard · 05/12/2022 21:53

You can’t put negative feedback on a buyer anyway… I have had a similar thing happen, file a complaint with eBay but they might still side with the buyer.

Some people are assholes

MeJane · 05/12/2022 21:54

Was it weighed at the post office?

user1496262496 · 05/12/2022 21:57

She probably has the exact same item already, but without the tray part. So she bought your one, kept the tray part and the tray part and then return the rest of it. Now her one is complete.

humblesims · 05/12/2022 22:00

Did the photos in your listing show the tray in place?

Florence4170 · 05/12/2022 22:01

That's the only thing I can think of but she must have been waiting yonks for one to come up!

OP posts:
Florence4170 · 05/12/2022 22:02

Sorry I don't know how to show who I am answering but yes, the tray was in place. It's not even obvious that it comes out! Not obvious to me, anyway.

OP posts:
SO224350 · 05/12/2022 22:02

One my front page today it says something about has a buyer returned someone and it's not right? You can report her if the tray comes back missing.

Florence4170 · 05/12/2022 22:03

And what would I do with it?!

OP posts:
SO224350 · 05/12/2022 22:03

Something not someone!

Florence4170 · 05/12/2022 22:05

This is the picture showing the tray in place. I think you would need to prise it out, it doesn't look as if it's designed to just drop out.

If it's been shaken around in the post, could it have came loose and got stuck up in the lid section (at top of your photo)

Florence4170 · 05/12/2022 22:30

I did suggest that it might be stuck in the lid and she replied saying "How would you not know? You're the person selling the item". She says she's going to report so I think I'll report too. Normally if an item is damaged etc I just refund, but I'm not at fault here so I am not doing anything like that. If the piece had come out I would have found it. I don't know what's going on but I'm 100% sure it hasn't dropped out or been mislaid here.

I had a similar experience with a Lego set I’d sold. It was a brand new, sealed set, yet the buyer said parts were missing! I’d never had bad feedback but wasn’t going to refund because she was quite blatantly trying it on.

I did a little digging and didn’t just look at the feedback she received but at the feedback she gave others… and she gave a lot of negative feedback about missing parts or broken items. I phoned eBay and they said they’d sort it if she put a claim in. She never did.

Florence4170 · 06/12/2022 10:27

All sorted! She has messaged to say that the part was indeed stuck in the roof (it was a little house) and her husband is going to try to get it out. I really didn't want to go down the route of reporting her as an abusive buyer but I equally didn't want to admit that I had mis-represented the item when I knew I hadn't! I think it was decent of her to admit it (she also admitted she had been rude😀). Thanks very much for advice and shared experiences.

OP posts:
MeJane · 07/12/2022 06:51

That's good news. I think part of the problem is that everyone is on such high alert for being ripped off as it happened so often!

I contacted a seller last week to tell her the item had arrived after two weeks as she had put on the wrong post code and she immediately assumed I was trying to get a post refund and was defensive straight away. I wasn't, I was just telling her that was the reason it had been lost.
