To not pay until asked

I ordered a household item on next day delivery two weeks ago. It was expensive - over £400

It didn’t arrive.

I called and it was promised the following day. Didn’t arrive and after this being repeated for 5 consecutive days I cancelled the order.

They refunded me and that’s that. I was pissed off but there you go.

They lied to me repeatedly about the item’s whereabouts, about being called back by someone and only refunded me because I ended up in Twitter where it’s apparent a whole load of customers have had the same issue.

The item arrived today.

DH took it in as I was at work and he just assumed it was normal Xmas shopping and I was at work.

I’ve decided to keep it but I’m not paying until they call me.

AIBU?

If you keep the product you have to pay. Otherwise it is stealing.

ArrrrrghStopLickingTheDog · 05/12/2022 17:33

If you still want it just pay, why wouldn't you ?

Butterlover1 · 05/12/2022 17:34

You know YABU.

WednesdayFridayAddams · 05/12/2022 17:36

Ffs. Have a word with yourself.
They will have paid the supplier and courier, they have their bills to pay.
Appalling to contemplate not paying and leaving them struggling to pay for the cost of all this.

VickyEadieofThigh · 05/12/2022 17:42

If you still want it, you must pay. If not, let them know and they can make arrangements to fetch it.

Merryoldgoat · 05/12/2022 17:42

I’m happy to pay for it but they gave me runaround for ages and lied to me.

I don’t feel inclined to sit on the phone in a queue for 30 mins to rectify their error as they told me it was cancelled and they’d recall the delivery.

But I’ll accept IABU.

Is it from a big company? If so fuck em. If they ask you for the money then pay them, it’s not like they can do anything beyond that.

Croftboft · 05/12/2022 17:45

Email or tweet them telling them if you don't want to ring up, they might let you keep it anyway, I've had that before but Yabu to just not contact them a nick it.

ILoveeCakes · 05/12/2022 17:48

Not for you to go chasing them around - you've done enough of it.
I'd leave it unwrapped in the hall and let them collect it if they ask.
If they are so disorganised then, yes, they might not realise.
After Christmas, i'd open it - but still pay if they chased - I wouldn't lie

Up to you, of course. Obviously you have the righteous folk shouting loudly, but you expected that!

Merryoldgoat · 05/12/2022 17:49

@SleeplessInEngland
Very big - profit in excess of £1.5bn but that’s not really the point.

@Croftboft

I’ve emailed them but I didn’t want to.

I'd keep quiet too. I'm betting they'll be in touch for £400 though.

lovemelovemesaythatyouloveme · 05/12/2022 18:24

Also wouldn't haas them to pay them!

PegasusReturns · 05/12/2022 18:33

Dyson?

I had a similar issue over lockdown. I did email them didn’t get a response. 2 years later I still have the item and they didn’t seek payment for it 🤷‍♀️

pumpkintree · 05/12/2022 18:48

Justify it how ever makes you feel better but just so you know they won't know you have received it and they won't chase you immediately but when they try claim lost delivery for your order they will see it has been delivered and eaither block your account or contact you to check you have received it and ask if you are keeping it to make payment. Remember what goes around comes around. No one lied to you they simply just told you what the tracking advises. Remember the staff don't control the delivery once dispatched.

VladmirsPoutine · 05/12/2022 18:49

If they request payment pay otherwise leave them to get round to it. Please forgo all the morality policing.

If its a big company I'd leave it. Its their mess up, their issue and they probably won't even know its arrived if they're that incompetent.

Consider it your lucky day x

Merryoldgoat · 05/12/2022 19:00

@pumpkintree

Just to clarify they did lie several times.

They told me it had left the warehouse and was on the delivery van and it was not even despatched.

They told me the tracking number hadn’t been issued but the pervious person had given it to me.

They told me they’d processed my refund and hadn’t.

They told me a manager would call to discuss and they didn’t.

Beneficialchampion2 · 05/12/2022 19:01

I'd have kept it and said nothing if there's no way delivery can be proved, fuck the big companies and their shit customer service. Some billionaire shareholder isn't going to miss £400

RandomPerson42 · 05/12/2022 19:05

You have spent long enough dealing with them, when they do contact you you should be charging them for your wasted time and deduct that from the item price.

Georgeskitchen · 05/12/2022 19:13

Wait till.they contact you, if they don't, so be it 😁

Tiredallofthetime · 05/12/2022 19:15

When this happened to me, I emailed the company and explained and they let me keep it as a thanks for my honesty! Result!
