Hi so I would like to know if you think I’m being unreasonable as I have fallen out with my in-laws for the following reason.
My MIL chain smokes I have a four month old baby and I have asked if she could refrain from smoking prior to holding him for at least an hour. She thinks that I’m being completely over the top. When I explained that it helps reduce the risk of SIDS she said that I have really upset her and that I should have said anything like that as it is incredibly hurtful. She smokes and I have to accept that.

YANBU

Can you blame your health visitor or midwife so her anger is directed at an anonymous third party rather than you?

I would not want a chain smoker anywhere my baby

Stand your ground on this one. Secondhand smoke can be very harmful and can linger on clothing for hours.

Its very selfish of her to smoke, and expect to hold baby without getting changed and thoroughly washing hands etc..
she needs to get her priorities right.
