2 hour walk with 6 month baby

My niece is staying with us from a hotter country. She takes the baby out everyday for a 2hour walk . All well, good for her and gets the baby some fresh air. However the temperature is due to be very cold this week, maximum 2 degrees some days. I say 2 hours is too long at this temperature. What does MN say?

Is it? I did this with my first because she only slept when the pram was moving. It was a great way to regain my fitness after pregnancy and some nice, quiet alone time to let my mind wander. I think we have forgotten that humans are meant to walk and be active FAR more than modern day culture makes space for.

Oh dear no I haven't forgotten.i no we need to try and be active if we can.and it's generally fine.a fixed 2 hour daily walk just seems a bit rigid and routined which could be a sign of it not being so great.but I'm sure there is more nuance to it anyway and op meant out for about 2ish hours.

Infants "run hotter" than adults do. If you are comfortably warm, an infant in the same room with you will be too warm. So long as the baby is well-wrapped, he will be fine.

Fraaahnces · 04/12/2022 23:59

Much safer in the cold than in the heat. (Assuming kiddo is rugged up and not getting wet, which I very much doubt. Roams and strollers are like spaceships these days.)

NoClueForAName · 05/12/2022 17:47

Really?

Presume baby is wrapped up. Not seeing the problem.

I don’t drive and we spent most of every day out and about when mine were that age (now 12/10/7). It’s a non-issue.

Unless baby is yours in which case it’s up to you.

But otherwise - not sure why you’d even think it’s an issue!

Wrap baby up appropriately for the weather & enjoy the 2hr break 😍

I’d say ‘mind your own business’.

its fine

Babooshka1991 · 05/12/2022 18:16

No, as long as baby is wrapped up they will be fine. Assuming you don’t live in the Arctic circle.

Okaaaay · 05/12/2022 18:21

Nothing wrong at all if baby is wrapped reasonably well. My baby slept like the proverbial during our 2/3 hour walks

Kamia · 05/12/2022 18:28

I think it's Finland they keep babies outside in prams whilst they go into the shops. I can't remember which European country they jump into freezing water with their babies. They turn out ok.

PanettoneMoly · 05/12/2022 18:29

I was on mat leave with a 6 month old during winter 2020 so walked a LOT. By myself most of the time cos, y’know, covid lockdowns. She’s still here to tell the tale of being routinely pushed around for 2hours +

RockyReef · 05/12/2022 18:39

I think your niece is probably having lots of lovely walks with her baby, what a nice thing to do. I walked and walked all over the moors with my two (often with a toddler, dogs and a newborn) for hours in all weathers and we all enjoyed it. Well apart from hail, no-one likes walking in the hail. My babies also napped outside all winter and they napped and slept really well which I'm sure was to do with the fresh air. They are also very outdoorsy children now, so long hikes in the cold has been positive for us.

Findyourneutralspace · 05/12/2022 18:44

My oldest screamed the roof down if I didn’t take him for a long walk every day. 20 years later he still has to get out of the house or he’s a right grump. As long as they are wrapped up they are fine.

BeanieTeen · 05/12/2022 18:47

Is this a joke? Why couldn’t a baby that’s appropriate dressed be outside for two hours?

SomeoneFireKwaziiKitten · 05/12/2022 18:49

minw We’re out for hours in all weathers at that age. Small babies are very portable and much easier to keep wrapped up than toddlers! Mine were definitely toasty in the sling!

Katekeeprunning · 05/12/2022 18:59

What age is the baby?

Bignanny30 · 05/12/2022 19:04

Always took mine out for at least an hour, often much more every day. Wrapped up in their prams, no matter what the weather. People don’t get enough fresh air and exercise these days - they stick the baby in the car seat and drive everywhere.

Mandyjack · 05/12/2022 19:17

As long as the baby is well wrapped up shouldn't be an issue. Hopefully the mum would recognise if the baby was cold & end the walk. Plenty of people who don't drive have to walk to school, shops etc with babies in the cold & rain. That's what pram covers are for

J3001 · 05/12/2022 20:17

When i lived with my mam used to put my son ouside in his big pram always got told babies are fine out side in any weather apart from fog. Did the same with my next one and obviously had school run so plenty of walks and if i didn't take them out when cold i'd be snookered as live in the north

IvyM · 05/12/2022 22:09

My baby was horn last December and I used to take her every day on a 2 hours walk throughout January, February etc The Scandinavians leave their babied outside for their naps to build up their immune systems. Also, is this your baby? If not, not, than this question seems a bit off

GingerNutMe · 06/12/2022 10:01

I get why the OP has concerns. The baby is not acclimatised to our lovely weather, they are used to everyday of their young life so far being much warmer than we currently are. But......... as people have said, as long as the baby is properly wrapped up, and mom keeps an eye on them then all will be fine.
