2 hour walk with 6 month baby

My niece is staying with us from a hotter country. She takes the baby out everyday for a 2hour walk . All well, good for her and gets the baby some fresh air. However the temperature is due to be very cold this week, maximum 2 degrees some days. I say 2 hours is too long at this temperature. What does MN say?

Prams in the snow with sleeping babies is one of my best memories of when mine were young.

JoyeuxNarwhal · 04/12/2022 21:49

As long as baby is wrapped up it'll be fine.

Nellie0564 · 04/12/2022 21:49

I worried much more about my baby / needing to walk my dog in summer (and had to avoid during the heatwave for the sake of both of them obviously) than I do now! I find it much easier to wrap up warm than avoid the sun.

OldFan · 04/12/2022 21:50

As long as they're kept an appropriate temperature it's ok.

3peassuit · 04/12/2022 21:50

As long as baby is layered up a 2 hour walk will be fine. I had winter babies and always enjoyed getting out in the fresh air.

Duttercup · 04/12/2022 21:50

Ah, I loved walking with my baby in the sling on mat leave. A podcast and peace and quiet. And her little red nose peeping out from under her hat and hood.

Chocolateandcherries · 04/12/2022 21:52

I’m currently in a Country where it’s very cold & snowing. I take my 6 month old out every day for a 2h walk - babies need lots of fresh air! It’s good for them. You should be pleased.

WonderingWanda · 04/12/2022 22:02

I'd say it's probably not your business as it's not your baby.

SamPoodle123 · 04/12/2022 22:03

Norwegians are known to leave their babies out in the cold for naps! Bundled up of course. Apparently they sleep better in the cold air.

slowquickstep · 04/12/2022 22:13

My babies (all born in the winter) slept outside in the snow in the north of Scotland. Big silvercross pram, they were fine and slept really well in the fresh air.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 04/12/2022 22:22

I took my baby hiking in Canada at minus 20 degrees. So long as she’s wearing the right clothing it’s fine.

Hellybelly84 · 04/12/2022 22:33

A bright, chilly day is perfect for a Mum (or Dad) getting out and about with the baby and much healthier than being trapped in all day (baby ofcourse wrapped up in a warm snowsuit/blankets). As im sure lots of people have pointed out, babies are often all wrapped up and put outside for naps in their buggys in colder climates than ours and I think that used to happen alot more here too.

Delphinium20 · 04/12/2022 22:34

I'm from a culture with the belief that you put baby outside (bundled warmly) to nap even on cold days. Not bitterly cold days like -28, but -6 was okay.

fannyfartlet · 04/12/2022 22:46

MN says nothing wrong with this.

katepilar · 04/12/2022 22:51

2 degrees is not "very cold". If she and the baby are dressed well for the weather theres nothing wrong with a walk. If it was -10 it would be a bit different.

kateandme · 04/12/2022 22:54

Is your niece ok? 2 hours of walking everyday is great but quite alot?

lanthanum · 04/12/2022 23:00

I once got home in freezing fog, worried that DD would much colder just lying in her pram. Put a finger on the back of her neck and she was warm and toasty. Lucky her!

Rainpigeon · 04/12/2022 23:02

As pp said, babies live everywhere! Asong as they are properly dressed they are fine. I lived in a different country where in the winter the days could be - 5 and she was fine, milk froze in her bottle and surprisingly she liked that! The first time I took her out I was nervous and dressed her up with 2 padded suits on and she got a little heat rash on her belly. Your niece will very quickly learn what makes her baby most comfortable, don't worry.

DoNotEatPickles · 04/12/2022 23:07

I took DD out for very long dog walks in the pram/sling when she was younger than that. She had terrible silent reflux and the movement soothed her. Dressed for the weather no problem at all.

Have also had babies and toddlers out in all sorts of weather several times a day dropping off and picking up older children from school/activities as a nanny who didn’t drive (and later, once I could drive, only did when absolutely necessary). All healthy teens/grown ups now.

Lndnmummy · 04/12/2022 23:08

Swede here! 2 hour walks (and leaving baby to sleep outside in the snow for a nap in the fresh air is very standard. Wrap baby up in lots of layers and all good

ChronicOverthinkr · 04/12/2022 23:18

🤨 I live in Sweden and can assure you a baby will be just fine outside for two hours, either wrapped up in a pram or in a carrier strapped to Mum. Mine slept outside almost from the day they were born, either while I walked with the pram or in the garden while I was inside. It’s what we do here.

ChronicOverthinkr · 04/12/2022 23:19

Didn’t see your message before I posted @Lndnmummy! Hi to a fellow Scandi!

Mariposista · 04/12/2022 23:22

How lovely to hear about an active new mum, rather than a lazy slob vegging on the sofa in elasticated leggings, cramming hobnobs into her mouth.

kateandme · 04/12/2022 22:54

Is it? I did this with my first because she only slept when the pram was moving. It was a great way to regain my fitness after pregnancy and some nice, quiet alone time to let my mind wander. I think we have forgotten that humans are meant to walk and be active FAR more than modern day culture makes space for.

Bpdqueen · 04/12/2022 23:23

Is she actually going for a 2 hour walk or is she going to local shops or cafes to have a bit of space from you
