2 hour walk with 6 month baby

My niece is staying with us from a hotter country. She takes the baby out everyday for a 2hour walk . All well, good for her and gets the baby some fresh air. However the temperature is due to be very cold this week, maximum 2 degrees some days. I say 2 hours is too long at this temperature. What does MN say?

I did this pretty much every day with DS until I went back to work when he was 1. He enjoyed it and used to nap after looking around for a bit, I listened to podcasts and lost the extra few pounds I was carrying from pregnancy. He was wrapped up in the winter and appropriately covered in the summer. Can't see a problem.

Dress the baby appropriately and it seems a lovely way to spend a couple of hours

Simonjt · 04/12/2022 20:16

Will the baby be naked?

Cassi89 · 04/12/2022 20:17

I take my 6 month old baby out almost everyday for a long walk, he’s well wrapped up and I see no problem with continuing at all as it gets colder…

If it’s your baby though it’s up to you.

Freddosforall · 04/12/2022 20:18

Glad everyone else thinks you're being ridiculous too.

Purplestorm83 · 04/12/2022 20:19

Depends how well wrapped up the baby is

NerrSnerr · 04/12/2022 20:19

Is it your baby or her baby?

It's fine as long as the baby is wrapped up warm. Fresh air is good.

At 6 months old, DC would only nap in a moving pram or in the sling. It was the depths of winter. I was out for hours. He’s fine.

Msmbc · 04/12/2022 20:24

This is very strange. What do you think people with babies do in cold countries? My baby sometimes naps in her cot but sleeps outside in her buggy whatever the weather.

MumWifeWorker · 04/12/2022 20:24

My second child was born in winter 2020 in Scotland when nothing indoors was open. He regularly spent hours outside in either his pram or carrier so ds1 could get some exercise and play with friends. Didn't come to any harm.
plenty of layers and always a hat 👍🏻

ISaidDontLickTheBin · 04/12/2022 20:24

No reason not to do this if wrapped up well.

Baby will cry a lot if too cold.

PeppermintChoc · 04/12/2022 20:24

I did this all the time - as long as appropriately clothed it’s no issue. Personally I think fresh air is the best for babies.

Lcb123 · 04/12/2022 20:25

Seems very healthy!

JustLyra · 04/12/2022 20:26

It is your baby or hers?

TheMoth · 04/12/2022 20:28

I used to do this. Then if ds was still asleep when I came home, I'd leave him in the back garden, as I couldn't get a buggy through the front door without folding it and he was a bugger to get to sleep.

astronewt · 04/12/2022 20:30

Cold babies cry. Babies can stay in cold all day perfectly fine as long as they feel warm. Mine was always inside my coat in a sling, perfectly toasty and happy as Larry.

Ellie1015 · 04/12/2022 20:32

Absolutely fine for baby. Make sure wrapped up of course but otherwise I think it's great. If your baby enjoy the break, if her baby none of your business.

pictish · 04/12/2022 20:34

It’s absolutely fine so long as baby is wrapped up for the weather which I’m sure he/she is.

NewJobGoingCrazy · 04/12/2022 20:36

Unless there are concerns re baby suffering neglect via not being fed well/not being wrapped up warm/no stimulation when at home then I'd not be concerned at all! 2 hours is fine when a baby is all cosy and fed

Calphurnia88 · 04/12/2022 20:38

My 8mo will only nap in the pram (or carrier, but he's a big boy) so I have no option but to go out with him for approx. 3hrs per day.

On top of his clothing he's in a pramsuit, then zipped into a foot muff and topped with a bobble hat so he's lovely and toasty in there.

Provided your niece has all the right gear this is a non-issue.

AllforGloria · 04/12/2022 20:39

Do you mean out and about in cold weather or literally walking around in the cold for two straight hours?
If the baby was very wrapped up, I’d be more worried about them over heating than being cold if anything.
I obviously wouldn’t have any child out in the cold if it was uncomfortable for them. If they are fine, there’s no problem.

DuploMum · 04/12/2022 20:41

It's mad how you even voice this opinion on someone else's baby on no less than MN 😵‍💫

Fundays12 · 04/12/2022 20:46

I have a car but have always walked for miles with my kids when they were babies. In the winter they were either in proper prams or baby carriers and always wrapped up with gloves, hats etc. They all love being outdoors now and still eslk lots.
