What on earth should I do about the bins?

I'm absolutely flummoxed by what I should do about a bin problem. I'm posting in desperate hopes that someone has dealt with this before or is clever enough to solve the problem.

I live on a relatively busy side road connecting a main road with a kebab shop (relevant) with a large school and station.

Bins are put out the night before as DH and I both work at the office and collection times vary in the day. Neither of us has an option to work from home.

so far the last 4 weeks, I'll put out the recycling bin properly. Someone will then dump a kebab shop takeaway box in the recycling bin, with gnawed chicken bones, food etc. the bin collectors tag the bin as containing non-recyclables and leave the whole thing. I then have to pick out the food and take recycling to the tip, just for the whole cycle to repeat the next week. Our non-recyclable bins are only collected fortnightly.

any Ideas how to break the cycle and get our recycling collected?

Put the bags out not in the bin?

Teadrinkingmumofone · 03/12/2022 21:39

How early does the bin get collected? Could you put it out first thing?

Itsabitnotcold · 03/12/2022 21:41

Bin locks?

ErrolTheDragon · 03/12/2022 21:44

Label your box clearly, and maybe ask the kebab shop to put a bin near your boxes.

Put your bins out v early the next morning? - we are up for 6.30 in the week and earliest collection around here is 7 am - depends on timing I suppose- v frustrating for you.

I'll definitely try it - I'm up around 6:30 so could do it then.

i think the bins are collected in the late afternoon so my initial thought was it might be the secondary school kids on the way home from school, but it may well be someone late at night

Bin locks?

Thanks, how do the bin collectors open the bin locks? I haven't come across them before

bin locks that unlock when the bin is emptied

It's labelled with my house number in very large letters and my house is about 25 -30 houses down from the kebab shop, so it seems like someone is getting food, eating it as they walk and then dumping in my recycling?

Thank you! This looks like a good option

Maybe ask the council if they have any sort of lock system for this problem? They may have encountered it before

Orangesare · 03/12/2022 21:55

Commercial wheelie bins all have locks so they should also work on domestic bins. I had the same problem years ago when a late night passerby vomited in my recycling bin.

Blowthemandown · 03/12/2022 22:21

@AdamAntlers most council sites say when they collect, ours is from 7am. So put them out just before then if you can, as (depending on when the kebab shop closes, it is likely (as you say) to be some one stuffing their face walking home …

CornishGem1975 · 03/12/2022 22:23

Our council tells to have them out by 7am, I'd just put it out in the morning to avoid the problem.

But it looks like it's really easy to open?
