To think MN has a race problem and it’s getting worse

1000 replies

MovingOutofZone2 · 03/12/2022 04:16

Posters say incredibly offensive, often outright racist things and MN lets them stand as it’s a ‘difference of opinion’ and that’s fine. Other posters complain about this and MN deletes said complaints as they are ‘personal attacks’ and that isn’t fine.

Then we have mods wandering in and going ‘let’s have peace and love’, as though ‘both sides’ need to calm down. No, we need to stop placating racists.

I’m not going to give examples as this will get taken down as a TAAT, but I cannot be the only person to be fed up with all this. MN needs to do something about the racism, race baiting and general cultural ignorance. Unless the site is ONLY meant to cater to white people and, even then, I firmly believe that most posters of any race don’t want to see all that ugliness.

It’s getting to the stage where, as a Black person, I’m steeling myself before I log on. And knowing that half the time I report a comment, I won’t even get a token acknowledgement. This isn’t right. It wasn’t always like this.

Yikes I will check out the account you linked but I’m not going anywhere near the shithole that is libsoftiktok*

*“Libs of TikTok is a far-right, anti-LGBT, disinformation Twitter account owned that reposts content created by liberals, leftists, and LGBT people on TikTok and on other social media platforms with hostile, mocking, or derogatory commentary.
The account promotes harassment against teachers, medical providers, and children's hospitals,[7][19][20][21] and spreads false claims and hateful commentary against marginalized groups.”

Sorry @BewareTheLibrarians, it was retweeted by a feminist I follow called Mary Harrington on Twitter, I didn't actually know what libsoftiktok was. Sorry if I've offered but that actual account does say what I have described.

The account just literally reposts the raw content and nothing more. They do not provide any direct commentary. The commentary comes from those responding to it.

BewareTheLibrarians · 05/12/2022 20:15

No worries @thewriteradmitsthat not offended at all. I’ll have a look for schafferlovestoread and sidestep the other site for the sake of my blood pressure :)

antelopevalley · 05/12/2022 20:16

Everyone who challenges racism on MN gets comments deleted and many get banned.

Wiki never lets you down 😁

“Fans and supporters of Libs of TikTok describe the account as simply reposting content showcasing "sex and gender ideology" that was already publicly available.”

However

“In August 2022, Libs of TikTok received substantial media attention after falsely claiming that gender-affirming hysterectomies were being provided to minors at the Boston Children's Hospital and at the Children's National Hospital. This resulted in a harassment campaign against both hospitals, including bomb threats.”

“After Libs of TikTok reposts videos of LGBT people or their supporters, some of her followers send harassment and death threats to those people, who are usually teachers.”

But sure, “just” reposts content.

wearing her hair in a non-British style? (No poster has ever clarified for me what a British style is!)

I think you have missed the point of what Ngozi Fulani was trying to say. She wasn't trying to copy a 'British style' (whatever that is) - she is proud of her African heritage and her 'locks' and she didn't think she should change the way she looks to make other people feel comfortable in her own space.

4. At that point NF had not even named LH although her name was in the media

She was named as Lady SH - that's probably quite identifying.

You’ve entirely misread my post. A Mumsnet user said that Ngozi Fulani was “asking for it” by wearing her hair in a “non-British style”. I queried the poster as to what constituted a British style; no reply. Nothing to do with what NF herself chose to do or wanted to express; everything to do with a Mumsnetter’s interpretation of her hair and clothes.

I think the key words are ‘wind up merchant’ in that post, not Brexit

Charming.

I'm not trying to 'wind you up' but I think you should read the Hackney Museum link - museum-collection.hackney.gov.uk/object-2018-54

You post as if you speak for Fulani, but you don't really. Several examples in the link you should read including;

"I can tell you that my experience, and many of the people I know experience, is we are often misunderstood and even looked down on by a lot of our Asian brothers and sisters. There is a misunderstanding. They do not trust often, and they do not respect us often. And I will say it. Others may argue that it goes both ways, and I do not disagree, but I’m just telling you my experience."

Also, I think you described yourself as "a second generation British Asian woman" -
Fulani: "Back then, it was called first generation or Black British. We now call it first generation African-heritage"

If that's the case, I apologise.

cakeorwine · 05/12/2022 21:00

One thing I find ironic is how certain elements of the media complain when someone is sacked for things they have said but then complain and demand that people are sacked for the things they have said.

I guess it's ok to say some things but not ok to say other things. And who gets to says 'it's ok' depends on who is saying it.

Ngozi Fulani is a fraud. Her real name is Marlene Headley and she was born to Barbadian parents. She has no connection to Africa and her company accounts make interesting reading. Sorry I don't know how to link the article but if you Google 'receipts Ngozi Fulani' the relevant address appears.
The article is on Reddit. She has claimed huge amounts in personal expenses and been consistently late in filing accounts.
It's a real shame because people like this are damaging race relations.

I googled it and all I could find were posts from some deranged Meghan Markle obsessed subreddit.

Museya15 · 04/12/2022 20:02

She's a massive hypocrite is the reason I cannot stand her. All about the title and money!

But why the strong reaction against someone you presumably don't know at all?

I find it hard to believe the intense dislike many people in this country feel towards MM has nothing to do with racism. It's so over the top.

HRTQueen · 05/12/2022 21:34

Yes it does seem an extremely strong reaction so many have against Megan someone they have never met, who has not committed a crime and who has not been cruel to anyone

antelopevalley · 05/12/2022 21:34

People would rather dig into this women's life to personally attack her, than accept That LS was racist to her.
Racism is the subject.

antelopevalley · 05/12/2022 21:35

@HRTQueen Their reaction towards Andrew is nowhere as strong. That tells you everything you need to know.

RedAndBlueStripedGolfingUmbrella · 05/12/2022 21:36

YANBU, I've been here years and it's definitely got worse over the past couple of years.

LizzieW1969 · 05/12/2022 21:39

I do think there's a real problem with racism in this country and it's very visible on MN. It's become more extreme in recent years, as is demonstrated by the voting on the racism threads. It's very disappointing that a majority consider the OP to be unreasonable IMO.

antelopevalley · 05/12/2022 21:42

MN has got far more right-wing over the years. These days some threads and comments would be at home in the Daily Mail.

TruckerBarbie · 05/12/2022 21:46

HotChoxs · 05/12/2022 19:22

@TruckerBarbie

I'm just sick of white social justice warriors tbh. Most of them are middle class individuals working in professional jobs who probably only rub shoulders with the most privileged members of the BAME society.

Actually this is what made me do a double take on it all. i was in a social community with a lot of people like this and i had to leave it. Having experienced a load of racism and grew up with a white sibling i was very sceptical around the notion of white privilege but here were a lot of white people who were very confident about it all.

Furthermore the ones who were most vocal about how important this all was were the ones who I was invisble to and kept triggering me on a personal level before this became a thing.

Sadly, this doesn't surprise me one bit.

There are those who seem to like to 'piggyback' onto genuine issues and use them as a stick to beat others with. The presence of an individual who has likely experienced these issues for first hand could quite feasibly make them a bit uncomfortable.

Did anyone really say that?

Marlene had dressed rather strangely given that she is from hackney. Seems like a bit of attempted cultural appropriation to me. But not everyone will agree which is fine- we need to learn to disagree civilly again in my opinion.

If it's true that she claimed £180k of expenses on top of a £65k salary then she's taking the piss!

Regarding the name change, I can understand why a lot of BAME people use Western names (my Sikh colleagues do this, using 'Harry' for Harvinder etc) but adopting a Nigerian persona is a bit dubious, especially if she's using to as a vehicle to be offended.

I can only see the links on that one Reddit, but they do appear to be collated from a variety of sources.
