AIBU To Ask If You Ever Write Cheques

...............I actually started a thread on Twitter about this about six months ago, and discovered that loads of American people do still write cheques. I also discovered that a lot of US banks charge customers for using their debit cards.

Does anyone in the UK still use them? DH and I don't even have a chequebook, although we have a few elderly friends who do, and who are adamant that they'll carry on using them.

Actually I think that the last time I received a cheque was from HMRC, with a tax rebate, and that was a few months ago.

You'd think they'd use BACS.

My Mum (mis 70s) does. She doesn’t do online banking and I’m always buying stuff for her so this is the easiest way for her to deal with money.

Merryoldgoat · 02/12/2022 20:08

Very occasionally for work and only after I’ve confirmed they’re so backward they won’t accept a bank transfer.

Breadcrumbsforall · 02/12/2022 20:09

Yes. Often write cheques.

FionnulaTheCooler · 02/12/2022 20:11

Only to pay the cattery, they don't take card payment but do take cheques.

crussont · 02/12/2022 20:11

I wrote one to the DVLA the other day

XenoBitch · 02/12/2022 20:12

No, not for years.

Greenshake · 02/12/2022 20:12

Cheques were great, a useful solution to loads of problems

Ragwort · 02/12/2022 20:13

Yes ... charity postal requests, that sort of thing.

BringbackSpringsteen · 02/12/2022 20:15

Only when gifting money for someone's wedding - more secure than cash at a large wedding

notdaddycool · 02/12/2022 20:16

Moved my account about 4 years ago, they were surprised I wanted a chequebook- haven’t used any of them! But have an account with Lloyds purely as you can pay in cheques on their app and my bank won’t let you and doesn’t have a branch that near, then immediately transfer money to my main account. 🤷🏼‍♂️

TolkiensFallow · 02/12/2022 20:18

Yes, for my cleaner, gardener and chap that serviced my boiler. Also dog walker.

Westendbuoys · 02/12/2022 20:18

Think I wrote a cheque for the solicitor when we brought our first house about 10 years ago. Not even sure I've got a cheque book now.

ditalini · 02/12/2022 20:18

I've absolutely no idea where my cheque book is and I don't remember the last time I saw it (definitely years), so I guess that means no, I don't.

I used to find getting cheques pretty irritating too, but the facility to bank them using your mobile app is brilliant.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 02/12/2022 20:19

Charity requests and the management company service charges, largely because it inconveniences them. A small kickback for the money they charge us for doing sod all.

TigerRag · 02/12/2022 20:21

I received one last year despite being asked for my bank details

Switched banks in 2015 and didn't ask for a cheque book. Think I last wrote on in 2013/14.

flowerycurtain · 02/12/2022 20:21

Yup. Still use them quite a lot in our line of work. Farming. Still paid fairly often via cheque as well.

flowerycurtain · 02/12/2022 20:21

And yea I acknowledge we are very backwards!!

MintJulia · 02/12/2022 20:22

Hair salon only takes cash or cheques
Chimney sweep
Local shooting club
Karate club grading fees
The Christmas tree man

It's safer than holding cash and costs less to process that swiping a card.

Kabalagala · 02/12/2022 20:23

I've never even had a cheque book. Can't think of an occasion I would have wanted one tbh.
Only receive maybe 2 or 3 a year.

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 02/12/2022 20:25

I’ve never a wrote out a cheque, and haven’t had a chequebook for years. I think I’ve only received about 5 over the years too.

mrsfollowill · 02/12/2022 20:27

Maybe 2005 since I last wrote one- used to pay nursery fees weekly by cheque.
My mum is nearly 80 and still writes cheques- mostly to me as I do her shopping online using my card. I pay the cheque into my account using mobile app. Cannot use her debit card online as she has no security/mobile details set up with her bank but she uses her card rather than cash/cheque in shops.

ErinAoife · 02/12/2022 20:28

Every month for the school bus, they don't accept transfer, only cash or cheque.

mast0650 · 02/12/2022 20:29

No. Never. Not for years. Can't remember the last time!
