AIBU To Ask If You Ever Write Cheques

...............I actually started a thread on Twitter about this about six months ago, and discovered that loads of American people do still write cheques. I also discovered that a lot of US banks charge customers for using their debit cards.

Does anyone in the UK still use them? DH and I don't even have a chequebook, although we have a few elderly friends who do, and who are adamant that they'll carry on using them.

Yes, in birthday cards, for example, or if I don’t have bank details. I’ve written 7 this year. They still have their limited uses.

Yes, I still use them for sending birthday money to relatives, or paying plumbers or other artisans to do work on my house. Also for donations to charity at a couple of funerals. Mostly do everything online, but it still find them useful, and wouldn’t want to not have the choice.

I haven't used cheques since the early 2000s. The ladt few bsnk acvounts I have had haven't even sent me a cheque book.

Most trades I use accept bank transfers. The one exception was the last minute guy we got in to replace skirting boards the day after we bought our flat (don't ask!). He only took cash or chrque, so I had to go down to the cash machine as I didn't have a cheque book.

For work collection etc.. we use Paypal or Monzo Me.

I get four cheques a year (Xmas and birthday for me and DD) from my 96 year old grandmother. The person with power of attorney sends them on her behalf. I am very grateful for the money but paying in is so annoying. My bank doesn’t yet have the app facility and we live rurally, miles from a branch so I post which takes forever.

I don’t write any. I do have an ancient chequebook but the only person paid was my old livery yard as they only took cheques. New yard is bank transfer.

I pay my farrier in cash and everything else has gone digital-we are mid renovation and absolutely every trade has taken bank transfer or card which I love. Chimney sweep produced a card machine 👍

What work do you do which requires you to write cheques, out of interest?

My mum writes cheques to pay her credit card bill. She also writes them to pay tradesmen (builders, etc.) whose bills are too large to pay in cash. She doesn't have any other means of paying for these things as she doesn't have access to the internet.

We wrote one to dvla the other day for our trade plates. You can only pay by cheque or postal order. The cheque book is neatly finished and the bank don’t send them anymore as far as I’m aware.

luxxlisbon · 05/12/2022 11:13

I’ve never even had a cheque book.

Isn't it weird that the DVLA seem to want cheques only for some transactions.

I write cheques on occasion - usually only to businesses that do not take debit cards, or have internet payment details readily available. It is a pain. However, I don't particularly carry cash around either. I had to visit the bank to get a cheque book! They wouldn't send me one when I called.

PurpleButterflyWings · 06/12/2022 00:00

I haven't actually written a cheque since the decade before last.
