Is the new white Range Rover? (Light hearted!)

We live in one of those areas that’s generally pretty poor, council estate etc. White range rovers everywhere as a mark of “I’m richer than you!”

All of a sudden this year everyone has a huge display of outdoor Christmas lights. This has never happened before but this year it very competitive and new lights keep getting added to houses. I joked to my husband that with the rise in costs of energy bills, is this the new way of flashing your wealth? He said I may have a point!!

Have you noticed anything like this in your area?

Im happy as i bloody love looking at Christmas lights and I take the baby out for an evening stroll now every night to look at them all. (Which is why I’ve noticed what houses seem to be in competition with each other)

Aibu to think this might be the reason? I’d love to join in the light show but we just can’t be assed with putting them up and taking them down again.

Yes, I've noticed some really elaborate ones on the way home from school this year. I actually really like it, the kids are excited to see them. Cheers things up a bit.

Pretty much, yes.

Perhaps people just want a bit of brightness in among the grim reality of life.

I'm not fully understanding the white Range Rover thing though?

Seems 75% of the dogs around here are french bulldogs, simply because everyone knows they cost a couple of grand. I’m fed up of looking at the wheezy, bat eared fuckers. Still it’s better than the chihuahua craze of the early 2000s. Or the pug trend.

White rangers are the stereotypical “flash marker of wealth” car. Usually driven by people who really can’t afford one.

So number 43 has upped the game with one of those projectors and has quite literally lit up the entire front of their house with a show! Amazing. I want one.

How posh is it where you live, if all of the poorer
inhabitants can afford Christmas lights and / or Range Rovers? Is this one of those North - South Divide things? 🤣🤣

Boooooot · 01/12/2022 20:06

Not posh at all! Very deprived area!

Eh I haven't seen any council estates where everyone has white range rovers and a shit ton of Xmas lights. Council estates round here have staffies and normal cars.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 01/12/2022 20:12

This is why they have no money. They think they have money when they own a car that breaks down frequently. Beautiful looking cars, but no thank you.

Whatthefuck3456 · 01/12/2022 20:15

My area is the same yet they don’t have food in the cupboards 🫣

BrotherlyNonLove · 01/12/2022 20:18

Flash car in the path, no food in the fridge.

Snnowflake · 01/12/2022 20:20

Perhaps make it a rule that for every visit the journalist makes to a food bank for a sob story they should also spend 2 mins minimum driving up the neighbourhood streets to see the lights.

Titsywoo · 01/12/2022 20:31

I actually run a business that sells all the stuff you need to make cmas light shows (the type that flash to music to put it in laymans terms 😁). It's very popular and the cost for electricity isn't high as the lights are LED.

Titsywoo · 01/12/2022 20:32

Xmas not cmas!

I thought white Range Rovers and white Volvo estates were all ex-police cars... and consequently should not be purchased as they are likely to have had a very hard life.

This made me snort- whilst my farting wheezy bat eared little fucker snores on my knees.

Mines a rescue though, after her owner died and she was brought to the vet to be euthanised. I always need to explain to everyone why I have a ‘designer dog’ (very not me).

She’s bloody lovely though. Best temperament of any dog I’ve owned and has a similar exercise tolerance to myself. 30 minute exertion: 2 hour nap needed.

@Titsywoo ah amazing they look so cool!!

I was actually thinking this earlier - though the white range rovers round here are very much in the well to do areas, the OTT Christmas light displays are definitely not, and I couldn’t help wondering how people can afford all the decorations let alone the electricity bills! Though per a PP maybe they’re not actually that ££ to run.
