AIBU to ask how to stop my periods?

Because it seems like I am when I spoke to the GP over 2 appointments, and the supposed ‘menopause GP’ at my surgery and they prescribed me antidepressants….

37, non smoker, overweight, migraines, no more kids wanted, DP had vasectomy. Heavy periods, low haemoglobin - cant give blood.
cycles now 22-24 days, peri-menopausal symptoms but no fucker will listen to me.

How do I stop them? Anyone used the mini-pill/PoP/Hana back to back? It’s fucking shite and I’m done!

I have mirena and don't get periods. I know it hasn't always got a good press but mine has been amazing, this difference to my life without raging PMT and irregular periods has been amazing, will have my third next year - am now 46.

Restlessinthenorth · 01/12/2022 06:17

I'm on haha. First three months I had really low level bleeding (didn't need a pad) on and off, but since then haven't had a period for best part of 9 months. Been great for me. Dead easy to but too. Just got my useless GP out of the equation completely!

beeswa · 01/12/2022 06:19

Mirena coil here too. Crippling period pain and really heavy . Coil took around 6 months to settle with spotting along the way . Has been life changing . Wish I had it put in years ago

FancyFelix · 01/12/2022 06:20

Mirena here too. Its brilliant

FuckOffPeroids · 01/12/2022 06:26

Thanks all, I felt like screaming into the void this morning. I don’t feel so alone now.

I had a mirena pre kids, and still had periods most months. They were lighter though.
had a traumatic birth and struggle with exams/smears since. I’m not sure I could cope with having another fitted, but might have to at least try

Cerelle pill stopped mine years ago. The only scouting thing is calling them with blood pressure readings every 6 months.

Lonecatwithkitten · 01/12/2022 06:31

I understand you struggle with examinations, but more a is a cornerstone of menopause control. Even if it doesn't completely stop periods it makes them much lighter.

KatieKat88 · 01/12/2022 06:35

Desogestrel (POP pill) is amazing for me - went on it after having DD and no periods since.

rippleraspberry · 01/12/2022 06:37

If I were you I would just ask for a pill like Cerelle.

With the NHS you are screaming into the void with any women's health issues. Women's care is unbelievably bad and they will just prescribe antidepressants.

MissSmiley · 01/12/2022 06:38

I had endometrial ablation when I was 42, my periods had gone really heavy and close together, I haven't had a drop since, and I was able to have iron infusions for my anaemia afterwards and haven't been anaemic since

MissKriss · 01/12/2022 06:38

The nexplanon/Implanon implant always stops mine, it’s amazing.

Gwdihooooo · 01/12/2022 06:39

I had a merena coil and it didn’t stop my periods.

I now have an implant and haven’t had a period from day one!…. Only on month 3 though

Passthecheeseboard · 01/12/2022 06:39

One of my friends has the contraceptive injection every 3 months and never has a period

Frosty1000 · 01/12/2022 06:40

Cerelle or cerazette progesterone only pill stops mine. Have endometriosis so gladly not had a period for 7 years. I've been told I can stay on it until menopause.

PosiePerkinPootleFlump · 01/12/2022 06:41

Mirena. Close to zero periods for me.

I had the implant and bled almost constantly for the first few months so not that!

Flowersinspringgrowwild · 01/12/2022 06:58

Mirena. Went from so heavy I had to have iron transfusion to literally nothing. Had under GA as was traumatised from previous birth

LunaAndHerMoonDragons · 01/12/2022 07:06

The pill mostly stopped my periods, full pill not mini. Doing it back to back I'd get a light bleed about every 60-65 days. The Mirenas been even better. I think the implant is similarly effective. Once I hit 40 my doctor wanted me to come off the pill, I have migraines and over weight as well as age against me. Increased risk profile post 40 with migraines. Might be a consideration longer term.

Nodancingshoes · 01/12/2022 07:16

I have the implant and haven't had a period for 6 years. I'm aware this does not happen for everyone but it's been great for me!

XmasElf10 · 01/12/2022 07:27

Mirena here, am on my 4th and no periods. So so much easier to have fitted after I had a baby - cervix never fully closes to its pre-pregnancy state I understand.

Twizbe · 01/12/2022 08:00

I had an ablation done too. I'm 38. It hasn't stopped my periods but they are significantly lighter and I feel so much better after it.

sashh · 01/12/2022 08:29

I used depo, no periods or PMT.

RedSquirrelRoar · 01/12/2022 08:32

Mini pill (desogesterol) stopped my heavy periods completely (2-3 months of spotting then nothing at all). I do find it makes me feel a bit grumpy and low but has stopped bouts of raging anxiety mid-cycle (suspect I’m perimenopausal too!). You could start with mini pill and if the side effects are troublesome, try coil.

WhatTheHellIsAQuasar · 01/12/2022 08:39

I’ve got the implant, am on my second now and it’s completely stopped all my periods

Pashazade · 01/12/2022 08:45

Yup the mini pill has stopped my periods, although actually the other non POP pill did too. No side effects either. The base drug is desogesterol (as pp said) but it's branded as cerazette/cerelle. My doctors let me have a years supply at a time and apparently I can stay on it till I'm 55!

Can I ask what that was like? It sounds effective but uncomfortable?!
