AIBU to ask how to stop my periods?

Because it seems like I am when I spoke to the GP over 2 appointments, and the supposed ‘menopause GP’ at my surgery and they prescribed me antidepressants….

37, non smoker, overweight, migraines, no more kids wanted, DP had vasectomy. Heavy periods, low haemoglobin - cant give blood.
cycles now 22-24 days, peri-menopausal symptoms but no fucker will listen to me.

How do I stop them? Anyone used the mini-pill/PoP/Hana back to back? It’s fucking shite and I’m done!

Depo shot for me. Came off it this year as you aren't supposed to be on it long term but they say I can go back on it after a break. On mini pill now and periods are back and sometimes every 3 weeks. Hate them and ready to go back on the depo.

I've been using the Mirena since 2008 and haven't had a period since then. I'm 51 now and very little menopausal symptoms so far. I love it. Frequent irregular bleeding for the 1st 6 months, then nothing.
POP (mini pill) is also likely to stop periods, and can be used until age 55.
DMPA (contraceptive injection) also likely to stop periods, but can only use until age 50.
Implant can be used until age 55, but approx 75% of women who use it may get unscheduled bleeding.
Mirena is the only method of contraception licensed to treat heavy painful periods.
Hopefully you can find a method that helps you.

This isn't correct - you can use Depo continuously until age 50 if you have no medical contra indications. You don't need to take a break with it. That idea was disproved decades ago.

Cerelle/Cerazette stopped my periods completely.

It's generally safe to use until menopause but you do need the keep up the 6 month weight and BP checks.

Actually you don't. POP doesn't contain oestrogen so you theoretically don't need to get your BP/BMI checked at all.
It's habit to do it really.
It's oestrogen containing methods that need BP/BMI checked and even then just annually.

Ginmonkeyagain · 01/12/2022 10:18

Interesting. Yet my GP still insists on it.

SalviaOfficinalis · 01/12/2022 10:19

You can take microgynon back to back and just have a break every few months. And the period isn’t a “real” period so might not be as bad as your natural ones.

I also tried the implant (nexplanon) and it really affected my mood, I was consciously anxious and didn’t realise why. And it also made me bleed non-stop for weeks.

Yeah, we get a lot of people attending our clinic who say that.
Sexual & Reproductive health guidelines have changed significantly over the years and if its not an area you specialise in or take an interest in you can easily find you're not up to date.
During covid pandemic when we were restricting face to face appointments we supplied POP without the need to physically see the woman (just a telephone triage). Even now our Consultant says as long as its done every 18 months-2 years.

I have had the Depo injection for the last 20 years and not had a peroid the whole time (its bloody great!). I take Calcium to keep bones healthy along with other vits and have had a DEXA scan to check bone density. GP happy for me to stay on it!

@GCAcademic I'd recommend taking a good magnesium supplement (also star flower capsules) to help with low mood, I found it a game changer for counteracting negativity (I used to get horribly angry about things and on the inside knew I was being unreasonable but felt incapable of controlling the upset). The contraceptive pill is known to deplete levels of magnesium in the body. I'm fine now but if I'm having a rough patch I try and remember to take them.
My DH recommends them too, I was something of a changed woman! 🤣

Thank you. I do already take a magnesium supplement but will look into star flower capsules.

This has been brilliant. Thank you all so much. I’m going to go and get Hana mini pill from boots this afternoon. If that doesn’t work mirena it is.

@Newgirls it's really quick, I had novasure, you have to have a scan beforehand to check for fibroids etc, they put a balloon thing in your uterus, you're awake, on couch in stirrups and the lining is basically cauterised, I had watery discharge afterwards like when a scab is healing, but it wasn't painful. The consultant described it as instead of mowing the grass every month (your period) they dig up the turf so it can't grown anymore!

Thank you 🙏 for replying

how long does it take?

hilariousnamehere · 01/12/2022 16:51

Depo provera injection - also had horrendous periods, now not had one for nearly 21 years 😍

Newgirls · 01/12/2022 16:51

Twizbe · 01/12/2022 09:53

@Newgirls I had mine under a general anaesthetic.

No pain after at all. It was really easy and so worth it.

Thank you

was that nhs? General ansathetic etc sounds expensive so I wonder if they always agree to it

Greenginghamdress · 01/12/2022 18:04

Another vote for Cerazette. Taken since having DD and I only had 2 periods in 5 years.

Ilikeviognier · 01/12/2022 18:11

Cerelle. I haven’t had a period for 6 years since last child was born and I don’t miss them in the slightest! There’s a bit of breakthrough bleeding here and there but I’ll take it frankly.

Scarlettpixie · 01/12/2022 18:26

I take the mini pill and it’s marvellous. It has to be cerezette for me or I get breakthrough bleeding but while on it I have no periods and mine were awful before! I am 50 and have been on it for several years.

Twizbe · 02/12/2022 06:55

@Newgirls I actually had it done private but I was on the NHS waiting list for it as as far as I know it was going to be a general then as well.

Tbh there was no way I wanted to be away for it.

tempforquestion · 02/12/2022 07:07

I am the same as you in your op but 40. I have had the implant fitted and it was so easy and my periods have stopped.
