AIBU to ask how to stop my periods?

Because it seems like I am when I spoke to the GP over 2 appointments, and the supposed ‘menopause GP’ at my surgery and they prescribed me antidepressants….

37, non smoker, overweight, migraines, no more kids wanted, DP had vasectomy. Heavy periods, low haemoglobin - cant give blood.
cycles now 22-24 days, peri-menopausal symptoms but no fucker will listen to me.

How do I stop them? Anyone used the mini-pill/PoP/Hana back to back? It’s fucking shite and I’m done!

Endometrial ablation. Best thing I ever did

OldTinHat · 01/12/2022 08:50

I take Desogestrel, the mini pill. You take it with no breaks. I've not had a period since I started taking it six years ago.

MissSmiley · 01/12/2022 09:00

@Newgirls it's really quick, I had novasure, you have to have a scan beforehand to check for fibroids etc, they put a balloon thing in your uterus, you're awake, on couch in stirrups and the lining is basically cauterised, I had watery discharge afterwards like when a scab is healing, but it wasn't painful. The consultant described it as instead of mowing the grass every month (your period) they dig up the turf so it can't grown anymore!

Yup the mini pill has stopped my periods, although actually the other non POP pill did too. No side effects either. The base drug is desogesterol (as pp said) but it's branded as cerazette/cerelle. My doctors let me have a years supply at a time and apparently I can stay on it till I'm 55!

I have Cerelle too. Was on other pills (Cerazette and Microgynon) prior and didn't have periods then either. I hated periods, they were heavy and made me feel physically ill. I don't understand why anyone would put up with the hideous inconvenience if they didn't have to. (Not something I'd usually say, but you can't imagine men just putting up with periods, can you. "Sorry Bob, can't go fishing today, I'm on my period and there's no toilets along the river bank, is there")

GCAcademic · 01/12/2022 09:14

I bleed on desogestrel most days, but it's a tiny amount dealt with by a pantyliner compared to horrendous flooding to the point of not being able to leave the house and having to change my pyjamas twice a night even when using a mooncup during my previous periods. I do think it's made my mood very low though.

rizzo999 · 01/12/2022 09:15

Mini pill stopped my periods completely. I did try the mirena coil but it didn't help with periods at all so I had it removed after a year.

Tree543 · 01/12/2022 09:18

Mini pill cerazette stopped mine completely. I dont think this is the case for everyone who takes it though.

Reaadropofgoldensun · 01/12/2022 09:19

I was prescribed transfemic acid and postan to take at the first few days of my period. It helped a lot.

emmathedilemma · 01/12/2022 09:22

Have you had investigations to check you don't have fibroids which are often an underlying cause of heavy bleeding?
I was given a mirena as a supposed "miracle cure" to stop my heavy bleeding and it actually made it worse! A lot worse.

HollyBlue85 · 01/12/2022 09:22

Pretty much the same here at 37 with very heavy painful periods. Tried the mini pill and had non-stop bleeding, but decided to give the coil a go. Had Kyleena fitted August and haven't looked back. Periods stopped straight away and all I get now is very light spotting when my period is due. Wished I'd had it fitted years ago!! Smile

ThreeblackCats · 01/12/2022 09:23

Ask for a Merina coil. I had the horriblest if periods until I had my Mirina coil. I had my first one fitted over 15 years ago, they need changing every 5 years. It took 2 or 3 months to settle, never had a period or a symptom of a period since.

OneForTheRoadThen · 01/12/2022 09:33

I'm on Cerazette mini pill. I very rarely get periods now although I did have to persevere through continual bleeding for the first 3 or so months. It's definitely worth it now but was really difficult at the time.

Notanotherone6 · 01/12/2022 09:35

Mini pill always stopped mine.

Labradinger · 01/12/2022 09:35

I've had the implant back to back for 7 years and haven't had a period in that time

Ginmonkeyagain · 01/12/2022 09:37

Cerelle/Cerazette stopped my periods completely.

It's generally safe to use until menopause but you do need the keep up the 6 month weight and BP checks.

biedrona · 01/12/2022 09:41

mini pill

Do you mean tranaxemic?

Pashazade · 01/12/2022 09:42

@GCAcademic I'd recommend taking a good magnesium supplement (also star flower capsules) to help with low mood, I found it a game changer for counteracting negativity (I used to get horribly angry about things and on the inside knew I was being unreasonable but felt incapable of controlling the upset). The contraceptive pill is known to deplete levels of magnesium in the body. I'm fine now but if I'm having a rough patch I try and remember to take them.
My DH recommends them too, I was something of a changed woman! 🤣

DeathBy1000PipeCleaners · 01/12/2022 09:44

I used the Hana mini pill to stop mine. You can buy it online without having to go through the GP.

Nat6999 · 01/12/2022 09:44

Combined pill take packs back to back or ask your GP for norethisterone to stop them.

Twizbe · 01/12/2022 09:53

@Newgirls I had mine under a general anaesthetic.

No pain after at all. It was really easy and so worth it.

slashlover · 01/12/2022 09:54

I've had Cerelle/Cerazette/Desodestrel (they keep switching them) for the past 5 years and haven't had one period in that time.

AngelinaFibres · 01/12/2022 09:56

Passthecheeseboard · 01/12/2022 06:39

One of my friends has the contraceptive injection every 3 months and never has a period

I had this too. I had Depo provera. Amazing. No periods whilst on it and when I stopped having it they never returned. I couldn't have the coil because I have heart problems. Depo was amazing

maximist · 01/12/2022 09:59

Same here. It's amazing. Life is so much easier with no periods. I've been told I can stay on it till I'm 55 (2.5 years to go), I'm hoping that by that point I'll have been through menopause.

Vetiver · 01/12/2022 10:01

Mini pill worked for me, had to put up with a month or two of headaches, but no periods for a few years now, bliss!
