I give up...

I am getting some work done on my house. Not mega just a few odd jobs, new floors x2, new door, skirting in one room... kind of stuff. I live in a smallish town with painters, decorators, joiners, carpet shop, plumbers etc, so basically all home needs.

Within the last 6 to 8 weeks i have had so many tradesmen no shows that it makes me wonder if there is any work ethic left in anyone.

A local decoration shop owner booked to come to my house three times and only turn up on one of those occasions (1st time was 'unwell and fell asleep' contacted me the next day, second time turned up, 3rd time a no show texted me that night at 11 pm said she had been very busy personally and professionally. ) I haven't even responded.

Today a delivery company rang to say the furniture I had ordered had not arrived so couldn't be delivered. I contacted the company I ordered them from and they are 'looking into it' but it won't be coming tomorrow ( this date has been planned for the last 3 weeks).

My joiner contacted me this evening to tell me, (after I chased him to find out if it was going ahead) he won't be coming tomorrow, he is too busy with his own work at home and he will be in touch.

The joiner i had from earlier in the year made such an absolute mess of most of the jobs I had got him to do, that the new joiner was to repair some of those jobs as well as carrying out the new jobs.

I know it's an awkward time of the year but wtf is going on. The last work I had done I paid the day it finished, in cash. Am I being too bloody nice to people who are just messing me about. I feel like just saying to sex and travel. If I was in a big city I would just tell them to bugger off and not cross their door again.

I stood in front of the joiners manager last week and he was telling me how frustrated he was that no-one answered their texts, I had been the only one who had answered his text, HE, RARELY ANSWERS HIS PHONE OR TEXTS. It didn't seem to even register with him despite me making a joke about me trying to contact him and rarely getting an answer.

I worked in the nhs, if I didn't turn up, do my job, or do a good job, I would be answerable to my manager, my patient, their family, my regulatory body. If I could I would do the bloody jobs myself. I give up.

I used to get frustrated at this. Then someone said something to me that helped.

They said, the lads at school who became tradesmen, weren't they always late or didn't have the things they needed for that lesson, or had forgotten to do their homework?

Yes - they were those lads. They always remembered to bring a football for lunch break and a can of lynx to use after, but stuff needed for lessons was a bit more hit or miss. People don't change.

Oh how frustrating for you ! I needed quotes done for work on the roof and both roofers turned up on time , but guess what neither of them brought with them ?
