Bucketheadbucketbum · 30/11/2022 21:37

He wants to introduce a policy to put up the cost of school fees 10 to 15%. This is a tax on hard-working parents! We slave away cutting cots everywhere living hand to mouth to try and improve our childrens future . Live in an average house average area 1 shit car no holidays work like a dog to get our kids through. We are easing the burden on the state system by choosing independent schools. We're not sending them to Eton paid by our trust fund! Why does he want to punish strivers! Tax the energy companies! So disappointed. We need a new political party. What's the point in trying to better your future.

Just strive 10-15% more surely? Job done.

NightfeedsandNetflix · 30/11/2022 21:53

If your kids are already attending buy have to stop I do agree that's unfair. But that's the risk you take by living on the edge of your means.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 30/11/2022 21:54

Good for him. Bring it on!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Boo boo. Let me find a tiny violin to play... meanwhile, the 97% are following Labour's policy announcements with interest to see how else our lives might be improved with a government that actually gives a shit about us.

Vinvertebrate · 30/11/2022 21:55

Brilliant!

I support the policy but it should be done incrementally - no point slamming state schools with hundreds of extra pupils overnight.

CloudBusted · 30/11/2022 21:55

So to be clear OP. Kier isn’t putting independent school fees up. He’s suggesting they lose charity status?

I can see why you are upset at that thought. But it’s a policy that makes sense.

Having used private education I fully support this. The school was a business. Not a charity.

It was also part of a system that keeps the rich rich. I saw it with my own two eyes. It was an excellent school and provided so much more than a state school does. The contacts and connections were another added bonus.

It’s shit. Why should one child benefit from that just because they were born into a family that can afford it. I think we should strive to give all children the opportunity to reach their full potential- not just those whose families can afford it (easily or otherwise).

These schools shouldn’t even exist in my book. But they do and they are NOT charities.

The schools could choose to swallow the extra cost, of course.

BrotherlyNonLove · 30/11/2022 21:55

Great, state schools are suddenly going to have loads of money, better facilities and loads of parents demanding higher standards.

1 can save 2 x £18K AND for once in my life, actually get something for all the shit loads of tax my household pays. I’m now going to use up around £13k of taxpayers money to educate my Dc.

it’s about time. I’m sick of paying loads and gettng nothing back.

Exasperatednow · 30/11/2022 21:56

I think the money it raises could be used to support affordable childcare and enable women to maintain their careers. Then if wanted you could access higher salaries and pay for private schools.

Though I prefer the Finnish model where private schools are rarer and state school teachers are paid well and they are coveted careers.

CloudBusted · 30/11/2022 21:57

Agree. Finland model so good in so many ways!

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 30/11/2022 21:58

I agree with everything you say. If he were to go ahead with this ludicrous idea it would massively backfire as loads kids would head straight back to the state system.....good luck paying for them!

I for one am waiting to see how this pans out before sending my kids private (and taking a bit of pressure of the state system....)

What a massive wanker!

Alwayscomplaining · 30/11/2022 21:58

one of my kids goes private. He is dyslexic and I am sick of moaning to the local state school about the lack of help he gets, and I can afford to throw money at the problem so do so. His siblings are and will remain state educated. I am a Chartered Tax Advisor and totally agree that school fees should be taxed. It’s a joke that they aren’t currently. If you cannot afford the tax you cannot afford the school. Guess what OP, the vast majority of UK kids go through the state school system and do just fine.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 30/11/2022 22:01

Merryoldgoat · 30/11/2022 21:44

Yes. Sending your children to private school is an altruistic act.

🙄

It's not....but it does get them a better education whilst also helping the state system, what's the harm in that?!

napody · 30/11/2022 22:02

SometimesMaybe · 30/11/2022 21:46

Maybe just maybe if all these people “striving” had to send their children to state school there would be a bigger concern at the ballot box about state education and maybe just maybe our state provision would improve?

This.

I disagree with that, the vast majority do not do just fine.....the state system fails so many!

Keir - why is it so hard for people to get right? It’s only got 4 letters!

CloudBusted · 30/11/2022 22:03

OP. Your language is very dramatic. It’s not a punishment. It’s what is fair. Independent schools, on the whole, aren’t charities. Those that are (some are special educational facilities for those with significant needs) can apply for charitable status still.

If you want to leave the UK based on something someone has suggested they might do if they happen to win the next GE in two years time then that seems a tad flouncy to me.

Bucketheadbucketbum · 30/11/2022 22:04

Gosh so many haters. Its not a race to the bottom. Everyone makes their choices. We chose to spend our dispisible income on schooling and sacrified a lot to make that happen. what would you rather we spent it on?

OP posts:
HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 30/11/2022 22:04

I do r ageee with this tax either. My kids are in state but all this will do is push a load of kids out of the private system and put more pressure on state. Bloody stupid.

And don't tell me the extra cash will end up in the state school system. I'll believe it when I see it.

mathsgirl12 · 30/11/2022 22:05

Some very unpleasant replies on here. You don't agree with the poster, fine, back up your argument with facts e.g. how this policy will help state schools, children in general. But seriously replies such as "I'll get my violin out" are awful and add nothing to the discussion.

bossybloss · 30/11/2022 22:06

Bucketheadbucketbum · 30/11/2022 21:42

He wants to change the regs around VAT / tax on fees so they will go up 10 to 15% predicted if he gets his way. So we'd have to pull kids out as not affordable 2 more into state sector taking resources from already thread bare budgets. Super upsetting and disruptive for the kids affected. Just want to leave UK. No reward for saving or trying to better your families future. Just punishment.

Off you go then..byeee!

midgetastic · 30/11/2022 22:07

radrado · 30/11/2022 22:03

Keir - why is it so hard for people to get right? It’s only got 4 letters!

It does not sound how it's spelt so it has to be learnt

K-ear or K-I-ear

And the learning is hard as it's two vowels

Cherryana · 30/11/2022 22:08

To say you are doing a civic duty by sending your children to private school has a similar ring to it as ‘oh no they’ve run out of quails eggs’ or ‘I save money by using the aga’.
