to be on the verge of going Peig Sayers on it and making a poultice for me tooth?

I am going a little bit insane with what appears to be a toothache. I have escaped the legendary pain of a toothache until 5 days ago, though I have heard it described in the worst possible terms throughout my life. I thought with sympathy of those who described the pain, as it appears to render the sufferer capable of poetic and graphic levels of imagery which terrified me in their descriptions. There was something about the brilliance of description which suggested that a toothache produced a pain worthy of note; an inspirational level of pain.

I'm now at the point of going Peig Sayers on it with leeches, or of attempting to fashion a poultice at the very least. Failing that, was it Robinson Crusoe who was marooned on an island or something who resorted to twine and a door to pull a tooth? If I knew which tooth was the culprit, I'd knock myself out trying that method too at this point. Nothing has been ruled out.

Fuck!!!!!!!! This pain is horrendous! What's worse is that I know that I have codeine here somewhere but can I fuck find it!

In all fairness, Peig would love the pain and would get about 400 pages of ráiméis out of it. Lightweight.

She'd have been a prolific MNer. Her hatred of her SIL was of MN standards. Cáit was it? 😂

I read there was a suicide note left by someone who jumped off of the Golden Gate bridge... it just said "Absolutely no reason except I have a toothache".

I hope you feel better soon, OP.

Poetnojo · 30/11/2022 21:58

I feel your pain, theres not much worse.
Get the uisce beatha into you.

@Foolsandtheirmoney and @MoreCraicPlease I do. @RumNotRun it’s a terrible book. Na peistenna

@Doodadoo clove oil but if you can’t find the codeine try putting near whiskey on the tooth and drink some for good measure

It's a bit of a lament to be fair lol.

Cloves, yes, you can use them. Bung some in a pestle and mortar and crush them, add a drop of cooking oil, mix, and rub the resulting vile tasting concoction on to the affected area.

Doodadoo · 30/11/2022 22:02

I'm not sure whether to start with the salt, the teabags, the whiskey or the cloves. I suspect that if I start with the whiskey, I'll forget what I'm looking for so I'm going with the whiskey for now.

I tried the raw garlic thing in a fit of desperation in the depths of the night once. Nothing could have prepared me for the searing pain that ensued. 1/10 would not recommend.

Thanks for the warning.

Didn't Peig only have one tooth, to hold her pipe? Fair play to those of you who remembered more than that, I've managed to expunge the awful details from my mind!! I was in the Museum of Literature in Ireland at the weekend and they had piles of her books in the shop - gave me the horrors.

Doodadoo · 30/11/2022 22:06

RumNotRun · 30/11/2022 21:48

I do now, and have added one of her books to my wish list

It's a sad story of loss. It's quite a useful piece of history albeit very much a tale of woe and the curse of every Leaving Cert student in my day. My ex had never read a book but he read the English translation of it and loved it. When it's part of what you need to study, it loses its lustre I suspect.

I sort of expunged it myself too. Funny how I recall the poultice though. That pain rambled on for at least a chapter!

If you're still sober enough to drive, orajel extra strength may help you get through the night. Any supermarket pharmacist will have it.

(Note: I am not a dentist, you are not my patient, this is not medical advice...)

Me too...(painful memories unlocked...)

Oh God that book still gives me nightmares!

YABU op for bringing that up 😂

Seriously though, I hope you get your tooth sorted soon

MammaWeasel · 30/11/2022 22:11

Cloves first on the inside, something warm, like rice or salt in a sock heated in the microwave, on the outside, then drown your sorrows with the whiskey which will help take away the taste of the cloves.

My MIL says I don't prepare the prátaí for the dinner in the proper way, though I have 146 children and she's has only 56 so far less práití for her to peel every day! I don't care that's she's only got one hand with three fingers. AIBU to elbow her off the boat to Mass next Sunday and into the deepest part of the Blasket Sound?

BT11 · 30/11/2022 22:16

If you can get it - orajel is the absolute bomb at numbing a toothache. Think bongela x100.

Lasts ages as well

Have you been living under a rock?

Perhaps. Thanks for the input. I have glue here if you’d like some.

AIBU to tip my SIL off the boat so that I can live in my parents' home without her bossing me about? Who does she fucking think she is?

Interestingly, NHS says not to put gel on the gums. Believe me, I've googled every possible solution at this point.

Hold cold water in your mouth . This was the only thing that helped me 🤣😫

Doodadoo · 30/11/2022 22:24

To those who didn't have to study "Peig", she had an older brother and when he got married, this usurper (her SIL) MOVED IN! Peig would have been a prolific MNER for sure because by jaysis but she remembered things! Nothing escaped her.

This is what I was coming on to say. Have you got any painkillers at all to hand? I’d be taking a double dose of ibuprofen or a single dose of naproxen or diclofenac, plus paracetamol if you can’t find the codeine. Or get a taxi to an all night Tesco for cocodamol and orajel.

You can put it directly onto the tooth if that helps at all? It's a dual gel for the gums or tooth. I did when I had a terrible toothache and it was such a lifesaver.

Perhaps might be worth going to A&E if it's unbearable :(
