to be on the verge of going Peig Sayers on it and making a poultice for me tooth?

I am going a little bit insane with what appears to be a toothache. I have escaped the legendary pain of a toothache until 5 days ago, though I have heard it described in the worst possible terms throughout my life. I thought with sympathy of those who described the pain, as it appears to render the sufferer capable of poetic and graphic levels of imagery which terrified me in their descriptions. There was something about the brilliance of description which suggested that a toothache produced a pain worthy of note; an inspirational level of pain.

I'm now at the point of going Peig Sayers on it with leeches, or of attempting to fashion a poultice at the very least. Failing that, was it Robinson Crusoe who was marooned on an island or something who resorted to twine and a door to pull a tooth? If I knew which tooth was the culprit, I'd knock myself out trying that method too at this point. Nothing has been ruled out.

Fuck!!!!!!!! This pain is horrendous! What's worse is that I know that I have codeine here somewhere but can I fuck find it!

Sod the poltice, get a tea bag up against the painful area. Leave it in place for as long as you can. It's better than coedine for pain relief!

What sort of teabag? Lyons or Barrys? Will Lidl's do? Would green tea be better? I'm only half joking.....

We only have Yorkshire in this house, and we all know that anything coming from Yorkshire is superior. I would go with whatever happens to be next to your kettle but I cannot be responsible for substandard results due to inferior teabags.

I really hope you feel better soon. Toothache is so so misery inducing.

DancingLedgend · 30/11/2022 21:28

Clove oil.

cushionfiend · 30/11/2022 21:28

My mum (lived in the USA) had no healthcare provision and not much money, and lots of teeth issues. She used to heat up a sock full of salt in the oven and press that to her face. She also used a lot of clove oil. I'm very grateful for having inherited good teeth from my dad.

Would I be insane to attempt a Whoosh delivery of Yorkshire teabags - desperate times here and I need some relief! Do I brew the tea or what? Do I shove it inside my mouth?

Clove oil.

Unfortunately I don't have that. I have deliberately avoided calling my Dad as it is something that he would suggest. Honey, clove oil (or cloves), a hot whiskey, garlic and ginger can cure anything apart from my tolerance for solutions which might not work when I am in agony. Recommendations for pain relief are the prevail of those languishing in their painless glory. Ye are all complacent c**ts.

Clove oil if you can stand it.

I also swish salt water around 4x a day and chew raw garlic if there's an infection. Burns like the Dickens though.

But I was often in rural Africa or the Amazon etc when traveling and didn't have access to medication. They all worked a treat.

To the outside of her face? Or inside her mouth? Logically, it's actually a poultice when you think about it. Osmosis. Lol.

Another one of my Dad's solutions! I'm actually going to try the salt water. Will report back.

Bit of a left field suggestion, but I’m thinking a dentist might be helpful.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 30/11/2022 21:43

You need to get Clove oil - it really works. I resisted it because I thought it would be like all the other natural remedies which do fuck all, but I was wrong. A cotton bud soaked in Clive oil and held against the site of pain really helps.

Have you been living under a rock?

I spoke to one who has prescribed an antibiotic for me this evening. Have to get it from the pharmacy tomorrow if I survive the night

I have actual cloves here. Would they work?

I tried the raw garlic thing in a fit of desperation in the depths of the night once. Nothing could have prepared me for the searing pain that ensued. 1/10 would not recommend.

I wouldn't be surprised if we were alone on knowing who Peig was 😂. To be fair to her, I never gave her enough credence for the pain she endured from a toothache. She endured other pain too (I'm thinking of the 4 sons) but she was rather lyrical describing her toothache. I can honestly say that I have not thought of the woman since my Leaving Cert wherein I genuinely felt that she had it coming to her lol, such was the torture of studying her story!

By way of explanation for the non-Irish here (99.99% of posters to be fair), Peig was a woman who lived on an island off the coast of Ireland. Her biography (written in Irish) was something which we all had to study for the Leaving Cert (equivalent of A levels) and she was a much loathed character lol.

Peig - I'm sorry.

Blargh · 30/11/2022 21:53

In all fairness, Peig would love the pain and would get about 400 pages of ráiméis out of it. Lightweight.

I actually have!

Dab it on your gums with cotton wool. Then drink the rest in a hot toddy to get some sleep!
