Applied for one job but offered interview for another

I applied on Indeed for a role which is a promotion from what I do atm. It didn't state that a certain qualification would be required, and that training would be required.
Anyway I thought I'd give it a shot and applied. I received a call from them the next day inviting me to interview, and was delighted.
2 days later I had to clarify something about the interview so I called back. The manager said, 'oh yes , you're interviewing for X position aren't you?"
And I said, no it's the X position that I applied for. She said, 'Oh no, you need a qualification to work in X position."
So they'd offered me an interview for the same role I currently do, therefore I cancelled the interview as no point.
I guess they saw my CV and thought I'd be good for their other position, it just wasn't made very explicit? Has this happened to anyone else?

Yeah that's shitty of them. Crack on and keep going!

Perhaps they saw your CV and had people already apply with the required qualification but wanted you anyway. You should have kept the interview, ask for a payrise on what you are already on if you were successful and then do the qualification through them ready for a future vacancy.

If they hire at a lower role then they won't be in any hurry to promote... they'd be left with an empty lower role again...!

Far better to practise doing a really strong assertive interview and get the actual senior role in the first place!

I have had some awful job-hunting experiences. This doesn’t surprise me one bit.

Yeah maybe I should've done.. i don't know if they'd give a payrise but who knows.

I'm currently completing this qualification atm as it happens and did mention that, hopefully I'll have a chance when it's finished
