Motability car use…

Posting here for traffic.

I have a 22yr old son who’s in receipt of PIP. We have a Motability car FOR HIS USE.

I have applied for a nursing post (community based) and need use of a vehicle. It’s part time and so, work use will be strictly limited to around 10-12hrs a week only. However, I’m thinking I can’t use this car for this purpose. It will not affect my using the car for my son. It is his vehicle (he doesn’t drive and has difficulty crossing the road, even) and my hours must work around him.

Does anyone know? AIBU to even consider using “his” car for my work use?

@Punxsutawney thats really good, ours is subsidised so we make a means tested contribution. It’s still hundreds of pounds but admittedly a better deal than trying to do it myself. She’s now at college an hour away so 4 hours a day in the car for me is not remotely possible!

My son has “free transport” post 16 and post 19. Post 19 he too was at college an hour away and the first year he was a day student. He had a taxi and escort there and back. However we’d just been through tribunal for college funding so I think The LA realised they’d put us through enough shit already and cost us enough money in legal fees that asking for a contribution would have been the last straw !

It is the blue badge that carries the restriction - the disabled person must be in the vehicle.

Not necessarily. It is perfectly legal to park in a disabled space without the badge holder bring in the vehicle when it parks if the driver is picking up the badge holder.

I am rolling my eyes because I have seen this question asked so many times on the various disability forums I’m on and I know the answer is that it’s fine - having seen written confirmation from motability that people have posted themselves - and yet you have people here who have no knowledge of the systems at all spouting all kinds of nonsense.

If you are using a Motability car for business use (not commuting) you have to upgrade the insurance to business use. It clearly tells you that on your lease agreement and RSA documentation. Every time ive picked a new car up, the salesperson has explained all this too

Mobility allow one named driver business use with no change in premium.

This is my experience too

Use for dropping off or picking up is fine. It can't be used when only running errands for the badge holder.

Yes, but that's pretty much the same thing. The disabled lesson is actually using the vehicle. The blue badge is "attached" to the disabled persons use, and doesn't extend to being for the benefit of the person.

Motability say the disabled person must be in the car or you are doing an errand for their benefit example they give on their literature you are collecting food for disabled person. I don't think you using it for work if your son is not in car would be allowed. You could hire one for yourself from your salary. Most people expect to have to get themselves to work. I also have a foster son with PIP but only use his car if he is in vehicle. I keep an old one for my personal use so as not in to break rules and I could not risk him losing it.

No they dont.

No it’s not the same thing. The badge holder is not in the vehicle when parking. Many people don’t realise the badge can be used to pick the badge holder up.

Those saying yes haven't read the part where you say you're community based. The motability insurance won't cover business use and you won't be just commuting to a single place of work so I highly doubt you'd be insured.

You can ask for business use to be added to the insurance

Thank you both.

I’m really scared that Motability will take the car from us if I ask them. The flip side is, I can’t take the job.

I'd be honest and say you need the job to help support your family financially
They might say no and If they do get a little runabout but id say just be honest

TheSecondMrsMoorcroft · 29/11/2022 13:51

Hello all.

I’ve spoken with Motability. I can use the vehicle for work as long as this doesn’t mean it’s not available for my son. I’ll be doing very few hours initially and so absolutely not, he will not be affected at all.

I do need to notify the insurance and organise business use but apparently, there is usually no fee for this addition.

Have also removed my soon to be ex husband from the named driver status.

Thank you all.

@softpilllow, I drive foster son with complex SN to his college every morning then return home 3 hour round trip on 3 days each week. Then repeat in the afternoon another 2 1/2 hours. Other 2 days he goes to a centre so only 2 hour trip morning and evening with DH collecting him on Fridays. For all these trips over 500 miles each week I use motability car. For anything else I use my own car. Once every 4 or 5 weeks on a Wednesday, I go to see my family 200 miles away. DH drives foster son on that day in motability car and I drive my own car. My SW told me under no circumstances can I risk foster son losing his motability car. I did not argue with her I just accepted it was what she wanted.

I did say it was different in your case though?

The idea of a family having a second car simply because the motability car belongs to the DC is usually not sensible. One of the other, because under usually circumstances you can use the motability car as your family car and nobody needs a second expense, be it the private or motability car.
