Motability car use…

TheSecondMrsMoorcroft · 28/11/2022 20:03

Posting here for traffic.

I have a 22yr old son who’s in receipt of PIP. We have a Motability car FOR HIS USE.

I have applied for a nursing post (community based) and need use of a vehicle. It’s part time and so, work use will be strictly limited to around 10-12hrs a week only. However, I’m thinking I can’t use this car for this purpose. It will not affect my using the car for my son. It is his vehicle (he doesn’t drive and has difficulty crossing the road, even) and my hours must work around him.

Does anyone know? AIBU to even consider using “his” car for my work use?

No, you can't use his motability car for your commute to work. The rules are strict.

packedlunchlife · 28/11/2022 20:35

Op you would be the registered keeper and the named driver, am I right? I'm sure you driving it to work would be completely acceptable

Yes but driving for work may not be, OP will need to contact motability

packedlunchlife · 28/11/2022 20:36

@softpilllow ahhh, I see.

Thatsnotmycar · 28/11/2022 20:38

BakedTattie · 28/11/2022 20:34

for us, It’s anyone the car keeper (me in this case, on behalf of my sister) gives permission to.

Other types of insurance exist though which I’m unsure about. I just know what we have

That is very strange as I know several who would benefit from being allowed more named drivers but have been told it isn’t possible and the limit is 3 as per the motability website. Can I ask how you managed to get it?

Rubbish who told you that do you even have a Motability vehicle?
you can use it for whatever you please but there is usually a limit on mileage .
what is the point of having a vehicle just for the pip claimant and another car for commuting? .
I use mine for work and I drop and collect my son off too . I use it to take him out at the weekend and also shopping everything it is my sole vehicle.
OP contact Motability as some people on here haven’t a clue

TheFairyCaravan · 28/11/2022 20:45

You can use the Motability car for work if it benefits the person who claims the PIP/DLA. You can, also, get business insurance on a Motability car, but you must ask them first. So do that @TheSecondMrsMoorcroft . There’s so much rubbish on this thread, just contact Motability or RSA, they will sort it for you.

Contact motability they have different rules for all circumstances.

They wouldn't allow taxi driving but may allow what you are talking about.

Also some people do have an open insurance policy with them as they use multiple carers who drive the car.

This is NOT TRUE

Wiluli · 28/11/2022 20:56

Call them but you can probably use it if you pay for an extra insurance . I’m assuming you supprt your son financially and he lives with you so he benefits from you using the car to support the household . Call them . Good luck

cansu · 28/11/2022 20:57

I used to have one for ds. I used to drive it to work and back. I think the only issue would be if it was preventing him from doing anything. When my ds moved out of course it went with him. I think if you needed business use insurance this could be an issue though.

gluenotsoup · 28/11/2022 20:59

The car is to be used to benefit the person who receives the mobility element of PIP. Using the car to enable you to work to support both of you definitely covers this. Don’t worry about it, even for a minute. Take the job, and good luck to you both 💐

fortifiedwithtea · 28/11/2022 21:03

Following because I am not sure of the rules either. Our young adult daughter has a mobility car. Due to her intellectual disability she can not drive it. I am the appointee. However I can not drive it either as I have poorly controlled epilepsy (I do not claim PIP for myself although I would qualify). Therefore my husband is the named driver.

Easy. I just told them she needed unlimited drivers allowed to drive the car and they gave me the specific insurance for it.

its pretty standard and very normal for people who use care companies and need more than 3 drivers. It even says it on the motability website :)

As a nurse, I’d be using it to/from clients. I cannot take this job without my own transport. I won’t be using it to physically transport anyone other then my son.

I’ll need to ring them in the morning and ask the question.

No one can answer this question apart from Motability. We have business use on our Motability insurance however, my husband cannot drive it for any business use, only I'm allowed to do that because its my car. This is why we've had to keep 2 cars. I'm not always able to drive so we couldn't risk it.
People telling you to just do it and dont say anything...the insurance will be invalid if you do that and you risk having the car taken off you. Many are fitted with trackers these days.

Can you point me to where it says it on the motability website please so I can help others secure the same? As I can only find that page I linked to that said only 3 named drivers but you can change them. And this page that says the same thing.

TheSecondMrsMoorcroft · 28/11/2022 21:17

Yes, I am the named driver. Husband was also on the insurance but not now. The job would involve my having business insurance. I’m wondering whether it’s taking the Mickey, ha ing a Motability vehicle but also using it for work 12+ hours a week.

I will call them tomorrow. Thanks everyone, for the advice.

Its doubtful they would refuse

So many people on this thread who clearly have no knowledge of the mobility scheme or how it works. 🙄

It’s fine op, as others have explained. You’re working to support your son, and yourself obviously but your son will benefit from that, so that’s absolutely fine for you to use the car.

Most families with a child (or adult dependent) who have a mobility car use it as their sole family car. That’s what we do (although in our case it’s my car, as I’m the one with the high rate mobility).

You might roll your eyes but you cannot say it's fine. OP will need to clarify the business use.

MeanderingGently · 28/11/2022 21:34

We had a motability car for years. It was for my son but in my name on his behalf. It's perfectly all right to use the car for commuting to work or anything else, ours was basically the family car.

When I took job that required a lot of travel over a wide area, I changed he insurance to business use. That was fine because I wasn't using the car as a taxi or delivery vehicle. I did masses of mileage, well over the motability limit but it wasn't a problem, they just charged for the excess miles each year. As I claimed mileage expenses with my workplace, it covered the costs.

I'm sure you will be fine.

I am rolling my eyes because I have seen this question asked so many times on the various disability forums I’m on and I know the answer is that it’s fine - having seen written confirmation from motability that people have posted themselves - and yet you have people here who have no knowledge of the systems at all spouting all kinds of nonsense.

Op, this group may be useful - 61k members and lots of information on all sorts of aspects of pip and motability.

from this I would say that you can use it - providing the insurance is correct for your proposed use.
An old boss of mine used to use his wife’s car - him earning a wage benefitted how wife and paid for private care whilst he was at work as needed.

The car must be used by, or for the benefit of, the person for whom the car has been issued. So if you need to go to work in order to help financially support your son, then yes, you can use it.

This. It's not like you're out using it for Dominos deliveries OP.

softpilllow · 28/11/2022 22:55

What's the difference between using it for domino deliveries and working in the community?
