To think Royal Mail workers should not be striking

They’ve already been offered a 9% pay raise and declined. Royal Mail is already making a loss. It’s a national service for the public which is now being severely disrupted by strikes, it’s appalling.

Why are you a upporting companies that treat their workers badly (for example Amazon).

Lets have all workers self employed, with all employers getting richer and richer and avoiding paying taxes and benefits and their workers getting poorer and poorer.

But you get your parcels earlier..... ok then.

Yes I want my parcels to turn up on time. If the service is provided elsewhere then I will use that. That is my choice just like it's the workers choice to strike.

Fair enough, luckily others have better morals.

I avoid companies that treat their workers badly, I just don't buy into that culture.

Getting a parcel early, is not important. I mean if it comes at 10 am or 2 pm, so what?

MargotChateau · 27/11/2022 06:25

@Hitthehighseastoday the Royal Mail's chief executive officer Simon Thompson got an overall annual pay and perks package worth £753,000. The deal included a 'short-term' bonus of £142,000 (despite company's delivery flaws). Maybe the incompetent CEO should give up some of his bloated and underserved package to cover the cost of the very modest increase the strikers are striking for.

I support the workers, not the privatised companies ( that never should have been sold off).

Conkersareback · 27/11/2022 06:26

What do you mean by ‘modernise’?
Zero hour contracts/gig economy workers?
That’s not good for the employees, only the company.

Exactly this!

Royal Mail is the least disruptive of the strikes, anything important that you use special delivery for will still be delivered as it being prioritised. Online shopping just comes a day or two later or by another courier.

Zingy123 · 27/11/2022 06:27

We have not been offered 9%. It's all lies. It's about the changes in our terms and conditions. I am due to lose £2400 doing the exact same job I do now. We don't want to strike but we have no choice. We were there for everyone during the pandemic.

I love how OP has cherry picked the responses she will answer, largely the ones who agree with her 😂

Keep going as long as we you possibly can, I know losing money in the current economic environment isn't easy and that's what RM CEO is hoping will break you!

But as you know you're doing it for the long term good, not only for yourself but for all postal workers.

GrumpyOldBastard · 27/11/2022 06:36

DP is a postie. Over the last few years, they have already been expected to work harder for no extra pay.
Walks have got longer and he’s been suffering from plantar fasciitis. Now they want him to work later, so he won’t be able to pick up DD from school, meaning we’ll have to pay £100s more in childcare each month, or I’ll have to give up my job.
We can’t afford him losing pay by striking just before Christmas but we definitely can’t afford the cut in our family income that he’ll see if the current offer is accepted.

Fragmentsof2022 · 27/11/2022 06:36

Is this one of those Tory plant threads that doesn’t go as expected?

Fragmentsof2022 · 27/11/2022 06:37

Ps. Solidarity with the posties ✊🏻

FelizNavicrab · 27/11/2022 06:39

We live in a country where financial inequality just keeps getting worse and worse and worse.

Where wages have been stagnating for decades.

Where official inflation figures of 10% are hiding food and energy inflation which is much, much higher.

The net effect if all that is that we are working for less money, what money we are paid is worth less and all the while there is enough money to make those at the top astronomically more wealthy.

We need more industrial action. Not less.

I think so!

I worked with, not directly for, RM a few years ago, when they were trying to open up more income streams, one of the things they planned was for the RM vehicle workshops to start doing servicing, repairs etc for other companies, it didn't go through because the mechanics refused to do it and threatened industrial action. You can't run a business like that.

The irony of all of this is that Royal Mail vans are generally old and shoddy these days, with bodywork in poor condition. Morale is very low.

I give it five years and RM will be no more.

Mummadeze · 27/11/2022 06:43

Sorry but in my area the postal service has been terrible for years. Really unreliable, haven’t received numerous items including birthday card with money in from grandparents. My work sent me a free gift, didn’t receive it. Numerous other examples. The local sorting office is in absolute chaos by their own admission. Someone local saw a postman put a load of letters in the bin. I am very disillusioned with the service full stop so don’t feel very supportive. If it was well run and the local postmen cared, then I would be totally behind them.

NightOwl101 · 27/11/2022 06:45

It's not just about getting a pay rise. The conditions that Royal Mail are trying to take away from workers is disgraceful.
Their fighting to keep their current rights and not lose them and have the same pay

countrygirl99 · 27/11/2022 06:45

Power to the workers.
I work in a different industry. One where you would expect staff to be treated well but working conditions are declining fast. Treating employees badly is endemic in Britain and that needs to change.

BeeDavis · 27/11/2022 06:46

Do you have any idea of the new working conditions that have been put forward to Royal Mail staff? If you don’t work for RM then what the hell has it got to do with you?! They aren’t just striking for the fun of it.

How do you think poorer conditions and pay would improve that?

mrsbrightside1308 · 27/11/2022 06:47

Slightly different point of view here.im a business owner we have 2 rm lorries and 1 parcelforce lorry collect from us daily.one rm driver is all for strike even though he has just came back from a 5 week holiday to Australia.the other rm driver is against strikes and says the offer on the table is a good deal.the parcelfore driver Is also for strikes but he has also just came back from a 4 week holiday abroad.people on the breadline worrying about bills and mortgages simply dont dissappear for long 4-5 week holidays.people need to learn to live within their means.there are people In desperate financial need in this country now people who literally have not a penny, yet there are double standards I the rm staff I have encountered.

Totall agree @FelizNavicrab - i think there should be a general strike to be honest!

I don't think it's up to you how people spend their money!

So they have to be on the breadline to want fair pay and conditions?

It's not all about the pay anyway, what about the change in conditions?

Your local service is probably terrible because it’s poorly managed and because they can’t retain staff and rely on agency workers.
Staff are really demoralised- there’s no time to do the job they way they’d like. There’s no time to talk to the people on their rounds, it’s all about speed. They have to contend with poorly maintained vehicles. Last week DPs van’s back doors wouldn’t shut properly but was told he had to go out anyway. It’s crap. DP used to really like his job but not now.

DS1s partner works for RM. DS has a decent job. They live in the South East are struggling to afford rent and heating. 4 week holidays are certainly not the norm.

mrsbrightside1308 · 27/11/2022 06:55

No where at all did i say how people can spend their money but the bosses or the government shouldn't pick up the tab for peoples lifestyles anyway.typical mumsnet always someone looking to start an argument and trying to change what was actually said.not one driver has mentioned conditions actually, but I will leave you to it.i can see on here it's all good if you fully agree with the masses but not so good to post your own point of view!
