AIBU To Think That The Chalet School Matron Would Be In Prison Nowadays

..........................for giving unprescribed sedatives to the girls so frequently.

(lighthearted) (in case a million people tell me that IABU)

The Chalet School Matron was forever doling out sedatives to the girls, without even asking Jack Maynard to prescribe them first.
Shocking stuff. Nowadays, she would be jailed and struck off the NMC Register.

Nancy Wilmot and Kathy/Kathie Ferrars are also clearly in a relationship.

If you read the scene where Kathy collapses in class with a burst appendix it's clear that they aren't even attempting to hide the relationship at school.

"Kathy, darling"!

EHopes "Download from Dropbox into either iBooks or kindle. Most of them can be opened that way. (Hope that helps)"

thanks. Will try tomorrow, maybe it's because I'm not using the app.

EHopes · 27/11/2022 22:10

@MrsHamlet that's the best bit

Every time a new girl expresses concern about the rack and pinion she is told it's super safe, not to be silly.

It's the 'normal' trains which keep having accidents when Joey in aboard.

SugarPlumFairyCakes · 27/11/2022 22:28

How have we got to page 11 of a Chalet School thread and not mentioned Elisaveta or Belsornio. Uncle is a bounder and cad of the first degree and deserves his broken neck! Although quite surprised that EBD decided her grandfather would stop Salic law and let her inherit the throne....

But Elisaveta liked Joey despite being younger than her and there being no real reason for them to be friendly so it makes perfect sense that she would get rewarded with a throne (and several children later in the timeline). that's the power of liking Joey

TheShellBeach · 27/11/2022 22:46

WRT Elisaveta - We see how fickle Joey is, when we learn that she is definitely going to become Lady-in-Waiting to the Princess once they're both grown up.

Five minutes with Jack Maynard puts a stop to that little plan. Oh, and getting her first book published. Like that was a likely thing to happen to a schoolgirl FFS.

And a train crash conveniently introduces Jem into the books, into Madge's life and ultimately Madge's bed.

BTW does anyone here ever refer to a "long" family? Is it just EBD or is it a regional thing?

I do not know a single person who uses this term.

But Joey would have been totally unsuited to being a lady in waiting. Tactless, indiscreet, tended to expect to be the centre of attention always, not willing to slog at things she wasn't interested in, careless about her appearance at that stage of her life. Just as well it didn't happen.

Howyoualldoworkme · 27/11/2022 23:05

Just warning you that the Chalet School books are but a gateway drug to the madness of Elsie J Oxenham and the Abbey Girls books which have screeds of country dancing, May Queens and long families of girls with names beginning with J!
It's too late for me but save yourselves 😃

Anyone who finds the Chalet girls irritating will be driven to distraction by the Abbey characters. If ever a fictional character needed a slap, it's Joy Shirley. (Not so much in her first appearance in The Abbey Girls, but as the series goes on.)

To be fair I always sleep with handsome men who rescue me from crashed trains. Its only polite...

Joey as Lady in Waiting would have ended up in the total breakdown of all diplomatic relationships with the UK since no one would believe she could be as bad at the job as she would be accidentally.

EHopes · 28/11/2022 02:34

I'm afraid most of us have at least a passing acquaintance with the abbey girls. (Hides in shame)

I expect that the campfire movement would regularly show up in threads asking about cultural appropriation.

In terms of fecundity - Joey might have 11 children, starting with triplets. But Rosemary has 2 sets of twins within a year and all of them have names beginning with rose. Rosilda, Rosalyn etc. called (unironically) the 'rose garden'.

If EBD liked to marry everyone off to doctors, EJO preferred to gift her favourite characters men with titles and jobs that kept them conveniently out of the way so that they could keep up their friendships with each other in luxury, with numerous Nannies to look after the children.

I'd rather like an Elisaveta as an adult book. We are told she works as a cleaner for a bit on arrival in the uk at the beginning of ww2 and then she's clearly wealthy middle class enough to send her daughter to the school in Switzerland- but exactly what and when belsornia disappears is unknown. All we know for sure is that Joey did not cause the revolution with her hideous lady-in-waiting behaviour as she never takes up the job!

Ericaequites · 28/11/2022 02:52

@TheShellBeach My ex transman husband always called the series the “Chalet Dykes”.
Even in the Eighties on the other side of the pond, private schools had odd traditions. A door facing directly onto the horseshoe drive was reserved for seniors, teachers, parents and alumnae. I would wait there for my mum on late days, then run down the hall to exit by a side door. Staff could only use the back doors.

MrsHamlet · 28/11/2022 05:41

Gateway drug you say.... off I pop to my cubey to try to find these other books.

We are told later (can't remember which book) that Belsornia gets taken over by the Soviets and incorporated into the eastern block post WW2. That's why the king ends up as a sheep farmer in Australia. Which is the natural occupation for an exiled king of course.

Oooh, it’s on kindle?

I’m that used to Chalet School books being unavailable on there that I hadn’t even checked 😳

Thanks for the heads up!

This made me laugh as it shows as being on Kindle Unlimited on the screen shot you shared! (We’ve all done it.)

CorporateBull · 28/11/2022 07:46

If anyone wants to read a great fill in (I’ve read a few) there is a great one called “A refuge for the Chalet School” by Amy Fletcher which describes what happens immediately after their flight from Austria, it also covers Jo and Jacks wedding.

This is a fun book and well written, but definitely a ‘domestic’ one, as a heads up for those who find details of Jo’s picnics and tea cloth arrangements tedious.

Peace Comes to the Chalet School is another great fill in, about the end of the war, and a school-based one. It used to be silly money but was reprinted a couple of years ago so is more affordable now I think.

lieselotte · 28/11/2022 08:07

I'm not sure if EBD knew that other Universities existed. Other than the Sorbonne

I reread "Carola storms the Chalet School" yesterday on that fantastic Dropbox link and one of the characters in that goes to Edinburgh.
