AIBU To Think That The Chalet School Matron Would Be In Prison Nowadays

..........................for giving unprescribed sedatives to the girls so frequently.

(lighthearted) (in case a million people tell me that IABU)

The Chalet School Matron was forever doling out sedatives to the girls, without even asking Jack Maynard to prescribe them first.
Shocking stuff. Nowadays, she would be jailed and struck off the NMC Register.

The Bride thing blew my mind. It was raised on here a few years ago.

I never imagined it was anything other than the classic pronunciation but it could be either of the ways you've said, it could even be Bridey.

I'm not sure why I care so much 😂

I remember someone saying Bride’s name was pronounced in the same way as St Bride’s Bay

I remember that, too, but as I do not know how St. Bride's Bay is pronounced I am none the wiser.

"Bridey" mmmm.......yum, yum.

Bridies are lovely to eat.

FWIW I always pronounce "Bride" as you would in "bride and groom".

My grandma was called Bride, pronounced like bride and groom.

I’ve just tried googling how St Bride’s Bay is pronounced, and I’ve got absolutely nowhere. I’m still totally clueless there.

I’ve always imagined Bride to be pronounced as it is in “bride and groom”.

I just found a couple of videos on YouTube where people were pronouncing it like Bride & groom so hopefully that’s what EBD had in mind!

Hopefully, yes!

It just seems odd that EBD would feel the need to say Bride should be pronounced in the same way as St Bride’s Bay, if that’s actually the obvious “bride and groom” pronunciation!

EBD felt the need to say a lot of things which are generally senseless, though.

I sometimes think she should have provided a glossary.

Or would the CS pupils have called it a "glossy" just to be annoying?

As far as I remember, somebody said they’d never heard of the name Bride & somebody else said ‘Oh yes you have, what about St Bride’s Bay?’

Geometricfreeform · 24/12/2022 00:52

I’ll keep with the usual pronunciation then. Thanks, didn’t know it had come up before

I don’t know if it has on here - I mean that’s the exchange I remember from one of the books. No idea which one though!

RobinHumphries · 24/12/2022 05:58

It’s in the Peggy book

How do you pronounce St Bride's bay??

In my head I've always said (her name) Bride-ee, but I'm not sure why or if that's right!

EmpressaurusOfWitchesBackFromTheDead · 24/12/2022 09:43

Thanks @RobinHumphries! @SockQueen, according to YouTube it’s pronounced as in bride and groom.

CliffsofMohair · 24/12/2022 14:44

Mary Robinson, former president of Ireland had a chief of staff called Bride (as in b&g) Rosney. Bríd can be pronounced Breed/Breej as per rules of Irish language.

Something else that has me thinking….. why are none of the assemblies shown from a catholic point of view? The girls are segregated and we are always left with the Protestants..

Yes and the Catholics come in and join them afterwards for any announcements. No new girls ever seem to be Catholic either!

That’s especially interesting when you consider that EBD’s favourite family, the Maynard’s, were Catholic.

Were there still strong anti-Catholic prejudices in England in the mid 20th century? I know it was a problem for some centuries after the Reformation, but I’m not sure when it died down.

Bloatstoat · 27/12/2022 09:16

I think EBD herself converted to Catholicism, but not sure when this happened? So perhaps in the early books she showed the Protestant services as these were the sort of things done at the schools she taught at, whereas she didn't know exactly what would be said/done at the Catholic services? This wouldn't make sense for the later books though so not sure if it's much good as an explanation. I find the Protestant/Catholic aspect very interesting, it would be unusual now to find a school that supported more than one denomination let alone when she was writing.

TheShellBeach · 28/12/2022 17:01

Yes, but Mollie Maynard (Jack's sister) was definitely stated to be C of E. It is unusual for a brother and sister not to be part of the same religion.

Maybe Jack just decided to convert to Catholicism - but EBD does not mention this anywhere.
I expect she just forgot, as usual. Shoulda used that spreadsheet, EBD.
