The Chalet School Matron was forever doling out sedatives to the girls, without even asking Jack Maynard to prescribe them first.
Shocking stuff. Nowadays, she would be jailed and struck off the NMC Register.

I once spent an idle afternoon trying to remember the names of all the CS mistresses and once I'd finished my list, I spent another afternoon trying to remember their Christian names.

I managed to remember them all, except Miss Bubb.

Talking of Miss Bubb - what happened to her after she had a job interview with Miss Annersley? She'd been a complete bitch when she was temporary Head, but once she was down on her luck, she came begging for a job.
I remember her having an interview, then for some reason, nothing further was said about her.
Maybe Miss Wilson killed her on her way out of the school.

Miss Bubb taught for a bit, then her health took a turn for the worse and she died

This is true. What is the point of naming someone Cecilia Marya, then calling her "the" Robin, for the rest of her life?

Joey was so bossy about people's names, and forever shortening them to suit herself (e.g. Theodora becoming Ted, just because Joey says so).

Her reasoning for this was that nobody wanted to use a four-syllable name - so she called one of her daughters Felicity, then complained when Margot tried to shorten it to "Fliss".

Yes. I am only surprised that they didn't call her "the second Robin" or something equally nauseating.

One of the weird naming conversations was when Joey says that she wanted to call the triplets with matching initials, and she'd thought of Claire but couldn't think of another good name beginning with C.

She had Constance (Con) but even as a child I was thinking "What about Cecilie after the Robin?" So could have easily done three Cs.

Joey probably thought of Cecilia just after the christening & kicked herself.

Right it was explained in one of the books that as a baby I was soft and round like a robin so I was nicknamed the Robin (possibly to show it was a nickname - I don’t know). As I got older the ‘the’ was dropped and I was just Robin and then later still I was called Rob a lot more to show my increased maturity

I don't know who Ceilia is but I'm vaguely aware Joey had a gazillion kids.

Needless to say for someone so closely bound up with the CS, she was never called Cecilia.

I am just flicking through Summer Term At The Chalet School and I am tut-tutting at Joey's objections to a couple of hippies she meets in the train with Erica Standish.

Actually, I bet if a hippie approached Joey, announcing that she was her long-lost ward and was going to move to Freudesheim with her, Joey would walk off in disgust.

After all - no hippies ever went to the CS and Joey was only really ever interested in women who had been to the CS. It must have been very wearing for Jack.

The name thing is awesome. Not only does Joey randomly decide to give nicknames despite us being repeatedly told that nicknames aren't allowed, there's also a tendency for a kid to arrive with a totally normal name and someone to say 'oh, Joey will want to use that name in a book'.

Losing track of Marie-Claire makes perfect sense. She's got 11 of her own and at least 10 extras and yet she's publishing at least 3 books a year. While being 'the spirit' of the school and dropping by there regularly including inviting herself to prefect meetings.

I love when Bride is head girl and the prefects decide the only person who can help them to solve a problem at the school is Joey. Who is living in Canada at the time while the school is on an island in South Wales. Bonkers x a thousand.

Robin is never shown to be a genius, but despite missing years of school due to 'delicacy' and then having a year off after the escape from Austria (she doesn't seem at all damaged by that 3 week hike) she is in the 6th form at about 15/15 and then goes onto Oxford.

I'm not sure if EBD knew that other Universities existed. Other than the Sorbonne.

I'd never considered before the link between appreciating Joey and being allowed to have children. Will ponder on that.

For those who care. The India fill in was published by Bettany press not girls gone by, so is unofficial and NOT cannon. Which means no new fill in author will ever reintroduce Robin's cousin from that book.

Nancy Wilmot and Kathy/Kathie Ferrars are also clearly in a relationship.

If you read the scene where Kathy collapses in class with a burst appendix it's clear that they aren't even attempting to hide the relationship at school.
