£10 a day on gas and electric

Just got a smart meter and have come to the realisation that we are spending £10 a day on gas and electric - that’s without the heating on!

Christ remember about 15 years ago i had a token meter and put in £5 a week!

anyone else know exactly what they’re spending now?

We are 2 adults, 4 bed detached house.

I adult and 2 kids 4 bed detached and trying to keep it below £5 a day for gas and electric. Its creeping up though now its colder.

Ginmonkeyagain · 26/11/2022 19:48

That seems a lot. We are two adults in a two bed flat and are currently spending between £2.50 and £4 a day.

Today it will be over £4 but we have had the dehumidifier on all day drying laundry, I did a big clean so used a lot of hot water, I have batch cooked three dishes and the heating had been on for a couple of hours.

Wombatbum · 26/11/2022 19:48

2 adults, 3 kids, 3 bed end terraced house - we’ve used just over £5 for both today. On days where we’ve done loads of washing, had oven on a lot, all showered it gets to about £8 now 😬

NotTooOldPaul · 26/11/2022 19:53

We are 2 adults in a two bedroomed flat. My wife is disabled and feels the cold.
We are spending £200 a month on gas and electric.

I've not reduced my payments over the summer and have a credit on my account but frankly I am terrified at what the future might bring.

WhatIsThisPlease · 26/11/2022 19:53

3 of us in a 4 bed detached. I have the heating on for 3 hours a day (on 19).

Mine is between £6 and £7 a day at the moment. If I have the heating on for longer it's more, obviously. I've only reached £10 once so far.

Dallyo · 26/11/2022 19:55

£2a day. 5 of us in a 3 bed detached,

However no gas - oil heating

BeyondThinkOfTheOptics · 26/11/2022 19:55

About £5-6 a day on electric only, then about another £2-3 on top for gas for the heating (3hrs). So max of about £9, and that's running two vivs, an American fridge freezer, and the tumble drier.

BeyondThinkOfTheOptics · 26/11/2022 19:56

(Four of us in a three bed mid-terrace)

Dallyo · 26/11/2022 19:58

Normal old white fridge freezer (not some double American thing). No dishwasher. Clothes hung outside even when it’s cold. They at least dry halfway. Then finished off inside. Showers three times a week for everyone.

BeyondThinkOfTheOptics · 26/11/2022 20:01

I replaced my old fridge freezer two years ago, before I had the upright beko one (the that had a tendency to set itself on fire!) for at least ten years. The American one actually uses less electric!

handslikebirds · 26/11/2022 20:01

We also spend £10 a day although have the heating on for an hour. Also 4 bed detached. But we are on a terrible tariff with really high charges so that doesn't help, and we have an old rickety boiler

snowbellsxox · 26/11/2022 20:02

I got my gas bill for last month £180 I know they add VAT too
Electric wasn't too much
But we do have the heating on a lot .. going to try curb it now
13 month at home though, more jumpers I think and fluffy socks

Grumpycatsmum · 26/11/2022 20:17

Averaging £9 a day. Detached house, 2 adults (both working from home) and 2 teens. We have a heat pump though and house is warm.

If your bill was for £180 that will include the VAT, don't worry that they can charge you anymore than it says on the bill

We have a large detached rural five bed. Two older teens and two adults in the house, DH and I working from home. We have been spending about £7.50 a day on electricity. We then have oil heating and hot water so that’s difficult to assess but it will be more than gas and we’ve had the water on for an hour a day and the heating on for a couple of hours a day.

lljkk · 26/11/2022 20:27

Right now, We think it's about £20 week on oil, and 80p (yes 80 pence)/week on electricity.

We have 12 x 15 yr old solar panels and are working down a credit surplus with Bulb (about £160) but don't ask me why our lekki is so low. I marvel at what in world others are doing to spend so much on electricity.

I would suggest what they are doing is having to buy it from electricity companies rather than generate their own

DohaDragon · 26/11/2022 20:32

We’re currently spending £5 a day without the heating on in the evening. We are still on a cheap fixed rate so I’m very worried . Only a 3 bed semi so no idea how we’re using so much. I guess the washing machine is on most days, the dishwasher as well, three people having showers. A dehumidifier running.

once the fix finishes it’s likely to be £15 a day

onepieceoflollipop · 26/11/2022 20:34

4 bed semi.

4 adults one child. (One a lodger) - lodger obviously pays so I feel it’s unreasonable to have a very cold house.

shift workers or wfh so someone is always home.

3 showers per day and 2 baths (in total not per person!)

all adults mindful of not using loads of fuel - so no excessive laundry or tumble dryer use. Washing mainly dried on line or with dehumidifier on.

heating off after 10pm
On for 6 hours evening and 2 hours morning, kicks in during day if temp drops below 17.5

£10-15 joint electric and gas per day depending on what is being cooked that’s since the weather got colder. In October it was more like £7-8

onepieceoflollipop · 26/11/2022 20:36

** I accidentally found out what it costs if the heating is ‘stuck’ on for 14 hours at 23 degrees…£19!! (Thermostat glitch)

but that included all the other usage such as laundry and hot water.

mummabear2003 · 26/11/2022 20:37

2 adults, 3 children in a 4 bed detached home. We are using 10 to £15 a day electricity and gas (combined). One of the children is a quadriplegic though so needs more heat, electricity for pumps, tubes etc then usual.

Aubree17 · 26/11/2022 20:39

£5 is a good day. £10 a bad day.
A bad day will be waging, tumble drying, dishwasher multiple times and home all day.

Dayandnightreunite · 26/11/2022 20:39

4 adults and two kids here in a 5 bed property constructed around 1910. Double glazing isn't the greatest and we are at about 10 quid a day.

Is this a joke? You do realise most people dont have PV panels???

BorgQueen · 26/11/2022 20:49

£6.50 a day the last 7 days, fairly even split between gas/elec. Heating has been on quite a lot as I’ve been home all day , smart heating though, controlled by phone. Rarely above 19 degrees.
