Just got a smart meter and have come to the realisation that we are spending £10 a day on gas and electric - that’s without the heating on!

Christ remember about 15 years ago i had a token meter and put in £5 a week!

anyone else know exactly what they’re spending now?

We are 2 adults, 4 bed detached house.

Average £9 per day for gas and electric 3 bed semi detached ,still using dryer as disabled child goes through 3-4 lots of clothes a day and needs to be kept warm thermostat set at 18 all beds have weighted blankets

Multipleexclamationmarks · 26/11/2022 22:13

2 adults, 2 teenagers. 3 bedroom semi.
Spend is around £4.50 a day on week days when we're out at work/school all day and around £6.50ish at the weekend when I do all the washing/drying and the kids are in playing Xbox, TV on a fair bit. Heating is on most evenings for 1-2 hours.

Allthingsbrightandbeautifulx · 26/11/2022 22:26

Only goes up to £10 in my house on a Saturday when we do 2 loads of washing and use the dryer twice too. That’s including the heating coming on twice in the day for an hour each time.
Every other day it’s £6-£7 a day. 3 bed semi - 2 adults, 1 child.

One adult. Gas and electric on standard tariff. I'm really trying to minimise my energy use. At the moment I'm doing £1.80 to £2 a day (incl standing charges). Not using central heating but I'm heating one corner(!) of one room to about 17C. I'm layered up with fleeces and warm enough to work without being distracted by cold fingers. I feel the cold so I may have to do a bit more when it gets really cold.

*We're £10 a day too, although our only gas use is heating and hot water.

A load of washing including the dryer is nearly £2, and I do at least one maybe two a day.*

Absolutely good on this I'm glad it's costing you so much, if you choose to do 2 washes a day pay for it, your lifestyle is unsustainable.

Rude. What a bitchy comment from you.
I bet that poster would rather not do one or two washes a day.
You have no idea how many people they are washing for. If you don’t keep on top of washing then you never get to the bottom of the basket.

Wow, not sure why my lifestyle would offend you so much, its not like I'm running a hot tub 😂

It's actually a reasonable amount of energy use imo, I'd only cut back if it didn't fit the budget.

DH is a landscape gardener but needs to wear fresh clothes each day to look professional. But he could just as easily have been a bin man or work in a dirty factory, people shouldn't have to go round filthy if they can afford to wash.

Around £7 a day for gas and electricity for the last few (colder) days. Four bed house (but not big), just me, thermostat at 20 deg from 8am to 10pm (I'm retired) Water on for an hour or so in the morning.

I've been in for the last few days, but if I'm going out, I use hive to turn the heating on and off remotely, so it's not on when I'm out, but I can put it back on half an hour before I get home. Those days I spend between £5 as £6 I think.

Fortunately the house is well insulated, as I hate being cold, so would resent turning the thermostat down.

Being judgemental is such an unattractive trait.

We are 2 adults, 2 children under 10 and spending £10 a day too according to the smart meter - WFH full time, heating on 4 hours a day 2 in the morning and 2 in the evening. 5 bed detached

Hesma · 27/11/2022 06:48

Adult and 2 kids in 3 bed semi, averaging £4 per day

Athenen0ctua · 27/11/2022 06:57

£2 a day in October, predicted £130/135 in the coldest months of December and January. Two of us in a three bed.

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 27/11/2022 07:25

Averaging about £9.50 a day but that includes keeping the heating on at 19° during the day, I find it works better keeping it on otherwise I'm paying not much less but constantly cold. I've been overpaying for months so taking everything into account I have approximately £1,000 credit built up to cover winter. There's 3 of us in a large, draughty, 4 bedroom stone cottage, we've done everything we can to insulate the house but it feels like it's a never ending battle.

Wherediditallgo · 27/11/2022 07:27

3 adults in a 4 bed. Currently spending £5 a day.

LovelyDaaling · 27/11/2022 07:29

£5 per day average in November plus 77p daily standing charges. 2adults, home all day, 3bed detached house. Gas CH, electric for cooking. That includes some heating , three or four hours on some days, less or none on some. We're being very careful

ThisGirlNever · 27/11/2022 07:36

We'rea family of 4. Husband works from home. I'm at home pretty much all day with a baby.

Electricity is £100 p/m (£3.30 p/d) without any attempts to reduce usage.

If you're not using gas heating yet, could it be?

  • halogen lighting (switch to LED bulbs)?
  • Immersion heater left on?
  • Electric heaters?
  • Cannabis farm?
Teacoaster · 27/11/2022 07:46

Family of three here in a two bedroom semi detached house. We're out of the house most of the day 5 days a week, and our spend on those 5 days is about £5 a day with the heating on for about 3 hours in the evening.

Yesterday was a stay at home day. I did one load of washing, one dryer load, used the oven twice (baking to entertain little one) and then later to make dinner. The heating was put on 3 times and we had the usual appliance usage... Smart meter was on £11 when I went up to bed.

I'm just trying to work out if it'll be cheaper for me to work from home or to spend money on petrol to get to the office 🙃 the world is broken.

MaverickSnoopy · 27/11/2022 07:53

3 bed mid terrace family of 5. We spend about £5/day at the moment with heating on for a few hours. Some days more, some less. In summer it was more like £3.50/4. I notice that our biggest consumption is our oven so use it sparingly and plan it carefully cooking multiple things at once. We used more the other day as I needed to use the dryer but then the dryer didn't work as the filter needed emptying and so it went on twice. DH accidentally left the heating on the other night so it was more. We can get it down very low with careful intention.

Michiru · 27/11/2022 08:10

I'm trying my hardest to stay on around £4.50/ day at the moment. 1 adult, 2 kids, of which one is a teen.
My smart meter is going crazy telling me I'm over my weekly budget with that, but I'm over £350 in credit with the energy provider, so I guess it shouldn't matter?

BorgQueen · 27/11/2022 10:00

People relying on smart meters to tell them their daily use costs - have you got the price per kwh set up correctly?

Have you compared against reading the meter yourself?

Cheesuswithallama · 27/11/2022 10:03

2 ppl, 2 bed semi, one wfh, about £5.50 average incl 1.5 -2 hours of heating a day. We are not intentionally frugal or anything, just naturally low users.

I recommend reading meter because there are LOT of reports of the smart meters not being accurate and giving people heart palpitations...
