To find this suspicious and odd?

Number I didn’t recognise called me this morning, didn’t realise as I was shopping but when I saw it I called it back. Woman answered and sounded nervous. I said I’d missed a call from them and they said “umm no, I don’t think so”. I said “oh, ok … it’s just that your number was on my phone”. She said “who’s speaking?” so I told her my first name. She went quiet and then said “Wiglet from where?” So I told her the city I was in (didn’t know what else to say!). She replied “oh, umm no I don’t think I called you”. I said “ok, no worries. Bye”

But I’m a bit confused, they clearly did call me, it was their number on my phone! AIBU to be suspicious about it? It was a mobile number.

Why did you give her your details?

Didn't you get her name?

Do you have a partner? That's my first instinct...

pinkpeoniesmakemesmile · 26/11/2022 14:34

Save the number and open a message in WhatsApp and you can see who it is, that's if they use WhatsApp.

If it happens again, don't disclose any information.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 26/11/2022 14:34

Her number may have been spoofed Not sure why she was nervous before you identified yourself though.

ThreeLittleDots · 26/11/2022 14:35

Any scammer can mask their own number with someone else's / a random number. I wouldn't think any more of it - and don't call strange numbers back!

FabFitFifties · 26/11/2022 14:37

I wouldn't give this a second thought.

Actually it might make sense if she's been getting a lot of callbacks from complete strangers tbf.

Hellocatshome · 26/11/2022 14:37

Just ignore missed calls if it is important they will leave a message or call back. She probably didn't call you and probably sounded nervous as she got a call from a random person she didn't know and like you suspected a scam.

TigerRag · 26/11/2022 14:41

I had this a few times last year. EE said (as mentioned) its to do with spoofed numbers.

donttellmehesalive · 26/11/2022 14:42

She might not have been nervous when she answered, just a bit hesitant to answer the phone to an unfamiliar number. I always assume it's a sales call and am not my usual enthusiastic self.

This wouldn't bother me at all. She could have rung you by accident, a wrong number. She could be making sales calls and didn't recognise your name amongst the billions of calls she's making. I wouldn't have phoned back or given her any info.

TrixJax · 26/11/2022 14:45

I had 2 call backs within a couple of days of each other last year. Both times the person said they had a missed call from my number. I googled it and sales or spammers can use random mobile numbers that look like call comes from that number.

Maybe the woman's had several of these all backs?

Joyfuljolly · 26/11/2022 14:49

Wrong numbers are a thing you know.

Sparklesocks · 26/11/2022 15:24

Your number was probably spoofed and used for spam calls, she missed the call and so called it back but obviously got you - the actual number holder - rather than the scammers.

I had a series of these last year, it was odd as they would call from my number but with the last digit different or a minor change like that.

Parroteets · 26/11/2022 15:32

Google the number and see if there is a record of it. If not just ignore for now.

DWMoosmum · 26/11/2022 15:45

NEVER call back missed calls. If they want you that bad they'll either leave you a voicemail or call back later. Definitely don't give them your personal details. I run a small business and get this a couple of times a week. My AP message says everything so if they choose not to leave a message then they can't want me that badly.

There are too many scammers out there.

Rowen32 · 26/11/2022 16:24

I don't think she did ring you, her number was used by a scammer, has happened me before!

allboysherebutme · 26/11/2022 16:33

Maybe save the number and look at her profile picture, see what happens maybe you can get some information from her profile.
Don't call back if she calls again. X

starfishmummy · 26/11/2022 16:33

She could have just mis-dialled a number she was ringing and not noticed.

roses2 · 26/11/2022 16:39

Do you have a partner? That's my first instinct...

My first instinct too. If it was a spoof it's more likely to either ring out or going through to some random call centre.

TwoRockSalmonAndAHaporthOfChips · 26/11/2022 16:39

Have you looked the number up on Who Called Me or similar sites? 100% of the time I get unrecognised numbers they are shown there as scam or nuisance calls.

UrsulaPandress · 26/11/2022 16:44

I had a missed call on my landline. Phoned the number back and a woman answered. She hadn’t phoned me. Her number had been cloned by one if those overseas scam companies.

LadyHarmby · 26/11/2022 16:50

I think you behaved more oddly than she did. Do you always ring back random numbers on your phone?!

VickyEadieofThigh · 26/11/2022 16:52

Similar thing happened to me a couple of months ago - bloke with quite a distinctive voice answered and said he hadn't called me. A couple of hours later, clearly the same man called, claiming to be my credit card fraud dept, etc etc. I knew it was him and that he'd called earlier to try the same scam.

cutiemcsweetie · 26/11/2022 21:04

This happened to me recently. My number had called someone - i didnt. A few days later i got a call from a number identical to mine apart from the last digit 🤷🏻‍♀️

Cheesuswithallama · 26/11/2022 21:07

Misadialed but fgs stop giving your details 😁

ChocolateCakeYum · 26/11/2022 21:11

My husband had the same phone call tonight!

Number beginning 07399

Random woman claiming she had a missed call from him.

He hadn’t called her at all. We blocked the number. It’s probably a scam.
