To wonder why I am so scruffy

Everybody else I know has everything in order, my house is an unorganised mess! We have random drawers in the kitchen just full of crap. I just shove things in my cupboards and I can’t seem to keep tidy. What is my problem? Things are unfinished and we don’t really have the money to get a new kitchen. It’s really getting me down.

I am currently reorganizing my lounge - new furniture coming. Old furniture is going to be sold. I'm going through everything and decluttering. I have deliberately chosen furniture to avoid having drawers of doom and surfaces (such as a shelf under the coffee table) which just end up being a dumping ground for everything.
I emptied three drawers of doom yesterday - just full of utter crap that I've saved because it might be useful - but it isn't and it never will be.
I'll put a box out on the street to see if anyone else can use any of this stuff and then it's going to be taken to the tip. I refuse to be made to feel guilty if I end up having to tip stuff that somebody might be able to use. That is why my place is a mess, because I've been hanging on to stuff like that. It's damaging my mental health. I'll attempt to find a new owner for it - if not, it's going.

And a question for you:
Everybody else I know has everything in order, my house is an unorganised mess!
Have you seen inside their cupboards and drawers of doom? They might also have the same problem but manage to keep visible surfaces clear.

Is it just lack of time to deal with it all OP? I have a tidy house, because I don't work and I have the time to sort things out regularly, file things, shred out of date papers, take things to the tip or the charity shop, etc. If I worked FT our house would be a complete tip.

This is my problem. Lone parent, full time job, two kids with additional needs. I hate clutter and never had any pre-kids, despite having diagnosed ADHD. But me doing that requires time so I don't feel exhausted and too overwhelmed to keep on top of it.

This might help give you some motivation to get things sorted, it doesn't need to be done all at once.
I haven't posted on the thread but my small thing for today was to finally clear a space in a cupboard to put away a pile of lunch boxes and tupperwares that were cluttering the worktop.

I can be like this. I’ve spent the last week ruthlessly throwing things out, especially things that don’t have a place to stay. If I’ve not used it, wore it or even thought about it in the last 6 months it’s gone in the bin. Don’t waste your time sorting out for charity/marketplace selling because then it just lays around even longer. Get some black bags and bin it all.

That's just dreadful, at least take your stuff to a charity shop instead of chucking it all in landfill 🤬

I'd just like to recommend de cluttering by category rather than room by room. So sort out your wardrobe first and encourage others to sort thier clothes , then donate bags of clothes to charity shop/clothing bank. Next, go through the airing cupboard and take any old towels/bedding to an animal shelter. If you have children, another day spent on toys and then these can be given away on fb marketplace. If you think you have too many plates/cups/glasses/kitchen gadgets then this could be another category. I find this much more effective than trying to sort out a whole room at once with lots of different types of items.

I think this is my issue too.

It's ok to have such a messy drawer. But the difference is it just needs an occasional clean. Once a Qtr or twice a year have a bit of a clean out. Your'll find you can bin 1/2 of it!

TheChosenTwo · 26/11/2022 18:18

I do regular declutters and just put stuff in a box or several boxes outside the front of my house. Everything has gone every single time.
Although I live on quite a busy road which gets a lot of pedestrian traffic.
I’m ruthless about what comes into our house too but we are consumers.
If something doesn’t have a home it’s found one. I have space in cupboards because the idea of them being crammed with useless ‘stuff’ makes me feel uncomfortable.
declutter. Get rid of things. It frees up a lot of space, both physically and mentally!

I get the “do it now or it won't happen” thing but please remember, there are also clothing banks in public car parks that you can put your black bags into, not into rubbish collection to end up in landfill. Not every LA sorts rubbish.
