Diagnose me - abdominal pain.

I know IABU but it's 1.30am and my appointment is on Monday.

Right upper quadrant pain, directly under the breast. Radiating to the center and back at times. Mostly dull, sharp when I breathe in. Worse when lying down. Intermittent - have maybe once or twice a month, always in the middle of the night for a few hours. When I eventually can fall asleep it's gone when I wake up.

Pain score 6/10. Not screaming or crying but very uncomfortable, haven't been able to sleep for 2 hours. First happened at the beginning of the year in pregnancy. Sadly lost the baby.

Have been meaning to make an appointment about it for months, but when I wake up and it's gone my brain has convinced itself it wasn't a big deal and won't happen again. I accept this was stupid.

Some gas. Paracetamol, ibuprofen, acid reflux and gas medicine has done nothing. Swaying helps a bit. Laying on that side hurts too much to stay on.

Anyone had similar and can prepare me?

Could be lots of things. Gall bladder? Hernia? Liver? Gut? Ulcer? Among others.

Usually RUQ can be associated with gallstones (biliary colic).. and if coming on at night, may be related to a high fat content in last meal of the day? (But could also be liver/renal causes)

most likely gp will examine you and request an ultrasound scan but you could try to see if there is any relation to food whilst you wait (ie low fat diet and increase water intake).

I’d say gallstones too. Is after a fatty meal ?

I'd bet my house its gallstones
Horrible pain there's just no relief.

Press gently on your ribs one at a time - are any of them tender? If so could be costocondritus, but sounds more gallstone like to me.

What did you eat last? I'd start a food diary and see if there is any connection. I had biliary colic , the pain was immense. Drs just threw tablets with me and told me to live with it. Which I tried to until I mentioned it to my grandmother one day and she told me she had similar issues with her gallbladder and pork was the cause. I haven't eaten pork in a decade and haven't had an attack since.

What was the treatment for you?

Keyhole surgery to remove the gallbladder but you need diagnosis first and in the meantime avoid caffeine, dairy overload and greasy fatty foods.

Sounds like a gallstone to me. Don't do what I did and ignore it - I ended up with acute pancreatitis and time in ICU followed by weeks in and out of hospital. Mine has been removed now and it's such a relief.

Just wanted to update. Gallstones was correct. I'm on a work trip in the US right now and needed to go to their A&E.

I have had it removed! I'm in pain right now. I hope it stops soon.

I hope so!! So far I haven't paid or heard of a cost. I cannot imagine!

Good job you're in the US- you'd be waiting at least 18 months here for the op unfortunately

I was going to say gallstones! So glad you've managed to have it out! I waited 8 months on the nHs and had to eat a very limited diet. Wish you well on your recovery. From experience sore for a few days then Youl be ok :)

That must be so scary to be away from home and have to have surgery @RoomOfRequirement!
