Most people make terrible food and can't actually cook.

They can't.

I read such horrors on food threads.

Either courgettes and mushrooms mixed in a worthy mushy horror.

OR jars, and packets.

Horrible. So. Much. Horrible. Foood.

@Tsort I genuinely don't go off Michelin stars, to me they mean absolutely nothing, but if that's your thing then you can't state that the U.K. has the worst cuisine in the world.
I lived in the U.K. for 13 years, can't say I ever paid for a bad meal in a restaurant, London has some of the best restaurants I've ever eaten in.
Indian restaurants especially.
If you're talking about traditional working class British dishes then I agree they are an acquired taste, but many people won't even try them without passing judgment.
It stinks of classism.

Most people in the U.K. cook and eat utter garbage. There’s a reason the rest of the world makes fun of you guys. You colonised huge swathes of the world, yet you’d be hard pressed to find an ‘English/Scottish/Welsh/British restaurant’ anywhere else. Why do you think that is?

Your own food is sadness and you take other nation’s cuisines and make it sad as well (‘spag bol’, I’m looking at you - the nation of Italy weeps).

You’re the only island nation with little to no seafood culture (no, I’m afraid fish and chips does not a seafood culture make).

Being so terrible with food is actually quite a talent. Being so terrible with food and being unaware of it is a true skill.

That's nice, dear.

What's your signature dish anyway OP? A tenner says it's cod...

My thoughts exactly 😀

How are Michelin stars ‘my thing’? They weren’t mentioned in my initial post, at all. You brought them up and I responded.

To the rest of your comment, I’d suggest you read the last paragraph of my last post again. If you think that everyone who hates British food, (including people - like me - from the colonised countries that Britain only allowed independence in the last century) is being ‘classist’, then you’re deluded. And clearly not as well travelled as you claim.

Dollydea · 26/11/2022 03:20

@Tsort what does your aggravation about colonisation have to do with British food? 😂

I'm from a colonised country, my husband is from Ireland, I'm not a fan of the "empire" to put it mildly, my hatred doesn't stretch far enough to 2022 to make up an agenda though.

If the worst food you've ever tasted is British cuisine then I honestly think you're lying.

k1233 · 26/11/2022 00:51

I'm on a page where the majority are American. I've formed the solid opinion that Americans eat like children. Food pics posted as "eating healthy this week" are drowning in cheese, dressings, fried foods. Otherwise it's a plate of unappealing muck. So I do get my where you're coming from OP.

My pet peeve is shoes. Fugly shoes should be banished to the furthest corners and wearers sent home to put on something decent.

So because a handful of people on a page on the Internet eat like children, you’ve decided that over 330 million of us all eat like children? Ok.

You should hear some of the generalizations they make here about British people. Seems some of them might be correct.

ImNotEntirelySureAboutThat · 26/11/2022 00:31

I've eaten most people's food.

Most people can not cook.

They can't

Now, there are an awful lot people. I don't see how you can have possibly eaten food cooked by most of them.

Artificial sugar may cause diabetes.

Scientists are now warning that some artificial sweeteners can alter the body’s microbes in a way that changes blood sugar levels, according to new data published in the journal “Cell” and reported by South West News Service.

The sugar substitutes — which include saccharin and aspartame — are in thousands of diet products such as fizzy drinks, desserts, ready meals and cakes and can also even be found in chewing gum and toothpaste.

Your reading comprehension (or lack thereof), much like your inability to form a coherent narrative, is not my problem.

Dollydea · 26/11/2022 03:34

@Tsort - I'm incredibly sorry but English isn't my first nor even second language, I'm sure your comprehension is advanced enough to understand my point though? I've never had any problems with any English speaker understanding what I'm trying to say.
Maybe it's just you and your agenda?

But you said you've eaten most people's food...how did you miss me?

Quorn does dinosaurs? I want a Quorny dinosaur. Our Lidl doesn't have them, maybe ASDA 🤔

Ericaequites · 26/11/2022 04:32

@Tsort My ancestors left East Anglia over four hundred years ago. New Englanders still like basic food decently prepared if bland and dull by some standards. What’s wrong with pot roast, two veg, and potatoes? Highly seasoned food isn’t wholesome. Some Americans eat fearful things, but not all of us use marshmallows in salad, fry everything, or put ranch dressing on pizza.

ScarierThanBoo · 26/11/2022 04:33

@Tsort You can leave Wales out of this, we have rarebit and laverbread. nid oes croeso i chi yng nghymru 😊

echt · 26/11/2022 04:37

Highly seasoned food isn’t wholesome

Eh? How does that work?

Suboptimalsitch · 26/11/2022 05:14

I think it’s a bit like gardening. Some people just seem to have the cookery equivalent of ‘green fingers’ and can make simple things taste special somehow. I have quite a lot of family and friends who can pan fry a bit of fish, cook some veg and do something to a few spuds, and make it taste special. My SIL will do something with pasta, some Boursin and garlic and it’ll taste like something from a good Italian restaurant. Give me the same ingredients and I’d make something okayish. I go to the WI and some of the baking that is brought in there is some of the best I’ve eaten.

I have a neighbour who is Iranian, one who is of Pakistani heritage and everything of theirs I’ve eaten I’d be happy to pay good money for. Maybe I just know a lot of talented cooks.

Most people in the U.K. cook and eat utter garbage

Either you are a sock puppet, or there are two people on this thread that have eaten what most people cook! That's remarkable. Do they make trousers big enough?

The odd thing is, most people that I know in the UK cook dishes from all over the world. So if most of us are cooking garbage, what does that say about the cuisine from many, many other countries?

This thread is gold.

Although the person that likes no crunch in their sprouts is definitely on the side of the op...

BiasedBinding · 26/11/2022 05:55

i bet the OP is feeling pretty satisfied with how this thread is going. Was opening the door for a bit of xenophobia intentional or an added bonus?

Muniononion · 26/11/2022 05:56

This is a culture thing, no? My English friends can rarely cook, pasta, oven food, packets, jars and tins often appear. My friends who have parents from outside of England (not the states!) usually can. This is cultural. If all your friends are English I can see how you might think this, but I have been locally to Thai, Sri Lankan, Indonesian, Nigerian and Iranian households to eat recently and I can assure you that they very much CAN cook.

IHeartGeneHunt · 26/11/2022 05:57

I can cook. I used to cook in restaurants and for private functions. I don't get much chance these days so if you saw my kitchen with the noodles, nuggets and hoops for a very fussy child and the slow cooker casseroles for me because I'm too tired after a day working in care, you'd think I was a terrible cook.

JoanOfAllTrades · 26/11/2022 06:03

OP this is my Winter Solstice menu - would you like to talk shit critique it for me? I'm happy to answer questions on the cooking techniques used.

Menu Winter Solstice

Canapé
Cherry tomato served with mozzarella and basil

Soup
Courgette and coriander soup with a swirl of crème fraiche
Bread roll

Fish
Swordfish in a lightly spiced tomato sauce

Salad
Asparagus wrapped in pancetta served with a lemon mayonnaise

Main course
Chicken and mushroom creamy casserole
Green vegetable medley

Savory
Crispy pancakes with garlic mushrooms

Dessert
Lemon cheesecake

Cheese
Selection of cheeses with biscuits

Fruit and nuts
Selection of fresh fruit served with nuts

What a lovely menu! BUT have you hand reared the swordfish? Grown and ground the wheat for the bread roll and crackers? Hand reared the dairy cow for the milk to churn into butter? Grown your own olive tree for the oil for the mayonnaise? Grown your own herbs and veggies for the mustard for the mayo, the garlic, the tomatoes, the asparagus, the courgette and coriander? Did you hand raise the chickens for the eggs and the actual chicken that you’re going to cook? Have you your own fruit orchard? Raising pigs for pancetta?

IF you didn’t do ask these things, then what good is your menu? I feel that whilst I, not such a connoisseur as the OP would be grateful for such poor offerings, the OP will indubitably scoff and stop at the nearest McDonald’s in her way home, having barfed your dinner into the emesis bag that she no doubt takes everywhere with her!
