Most people make terrible food and can't actually cook.

They can't.

I read such horrors on food threads.

Either courgettes and mushrooms mixed in a worthy mushy horror.

OR jars, and packets.

Horrible. So. Much. Horrible. Foood.

shall I use the phrase

bollocks
your talking utter bollocks

That's fine, but it doesn't negate my point. I don't feel superior its a discussion about food is all. Some testy replies on this thread.
Brits think a tomato tastes like the ones sold in Tescos'.😂I agree the UK is expanding its artisan ranges however that's just basic food in the majority of the world.
Stick to chips and curry sauce.

GreyCarpet · 26/11/2022 11:26

Obviously a goady thread but interesting nevertheless.

My mum was a terrible cook. Everything was bland and over done. No idea how really - my grandma was a great cook!

So I learnt by a combination of teaching myself and being taught by others. So the Italian dishes I do were taught to me by an Italian ex boyfriend, I cook Pakistani food how I was taught by a colleague and her mum etc. I've always cooked from scratch.

My daughter is an intuitive cook and can create something amazing from whatever we have in the house at 16. But that's because, I've always bought ingredients rather than food (which was her biggest complaint when she was younger).

When she was 12, she would send me shopping lists from recipes she'd found on the BBC Good Food website, make amazing meals and then improve on them for next time. She has a great repertoire.

It does negate your point as your making sweeping generalisations that are utter bollocks.
some tomatoes in tesco are lovely, some are tasteless water filled yuck.

bit shit also saying “Brits, know your place”

In my opinion curry sauce and chips is vom in a polystyrene tray.

that’s probably your answer, did your mum get to cook?

Why should we? Because you say er no

Maggiethecat · 26/11/2022 11:42

I think attitude to food influences people’s ability to cook. Cultures where food is celebrated and is the central theme in many a social and family gathering will likely result in an awareness and development of cookery skill from an early age.

My mum is a great cook but I never paid attention and so learned as an adult. Dh is an amazing cook which means I don’t cook as often as I could otherwise and probably I’d be a better cook if I did.

I think loads of people lack confidence and basic cookery skill but there’re tons of videos out there for those interested to learn.

RedAppleGirl · 26/11/2022 10:41

Why do people insist on using time as an excuse?
Back home all the family worked full-time, but will still prepare our meats from living to dead and curing. Mum still sends me home cured and smoked meats twice a year. Mum still has a huge garden full of various vegetables.
I don't know why brits are getting arsey. The problem with the British is pomposity, best food, best football team, best this and that. However, it's either an imitation of global food done poorly or a roast dinner.😂
Cardboard pizzas just top it off.

This post is embarrassing to read, mainly because there's more than a grain of truth in it. If we think we're good at football we're deluding ourselves - as far as the men's game's concerned at least - and a more uninspiring dirge of a national anthem you'd be hard-pushed to find in any corner of the planet.

Silver linings, however. At least we invented Balti ...

What a shame the women did well so you can’t bash everyone from the height of superiority

This is just a ploy to get a dinner invitation to mine. I'm not falling for it!

😂😂😂
The new PUA - negging for a home-cooked meal, not a one night stand ... I like it.

@StrawberrySquash I hear your sunday roast is gross, I bet you wouldn't risk feeding me one ...

I see some people on social media "cooking" and just🤮 Also, I hate the amount of food waste I see when people put together these pasta, marshmallow, chocolate, bacon, cheeto, whatever concoctions just for views and likes!

Proper cooking is not instagrammable, that is why.

mydogisthebest · 26/11/2022 11:55

Rocksludge · 26/11/2022 08:46

i always assume it's just different tastes. There are a lot of very popular takeaways and restaurants round here that I think are really poor. But other people really like them. So I must conclude that I don’t share their taste.

My mum is, in my opinion, a dire cook. Technically. But also in what she thinks is nice. She genuinely likes food that I think is crap. And I know she doesn’t want to eat the kind of food I like. It’s only a problem when I’m at her house despairing of the terrible food.

Yes I get that people have different tastes but honestly sometimes the recommended food has been pretty bad.

My MIL recommended M&S bread and butter pudding - ok but mine tastes much better. Someone else recommended a certain bread pudding which was really doughy and had very little fruit in. Again mine is much better although my mum's was the best by far.

Restaurants recommended where the food has been so salty I could not eat it. Lots of different recommendations that just turned out to be a big disappointment.

I really do think a lot of people can't cook or else their taste buds don't work properly.

Blueisthecolour1 · 26/11/2022 11:58

I like eating e-numbers

JunkIsland · 26/11/2022 12:00

@RedAppleGirl you’re getting ‘testy’ replies because your posts are coming across as incredibly smug and superior. Is there a lot of bad food here? Yes. Is there a lot of ignorance about good food? Yes. Are tomatoes in Tesco as nice as ones bought locally in Southern Europe? No. But it’s just not accurate to dismiss the entire food culture here as poor - things have changed massively over the last few decades, and you come across as doggedly determined to stick to a view of food in Britain that is outdated.

Reminds me of my Italian BIL who came back from a break in London raving about what he’d seen, adding “of course, all the food there was awful.” I couldn’t help but wonder where he’d been eating. Angus Steakhouse for every meal?

Cornettoninja · 26/11/2022 12:03

i think a lot of peoples sense of self worth relies on superiority over others. Personally I don’t think being a good cook is a good enough talent to outweigh being generally unpleasant.

MarshaBradyo · 26/11/2022 11:47

It's fantastic that the women did well. Shades of misogyny coming over, perchance?

BlackForestCake · 26/11/2022 12:11

American’s make stuff taste good, surely that’s the aim of food

I think the criticism you're referring to is directed at the weird videos you see on social media of people apparently trying to pack as much bacon and cheese into every dish as they can.

that's not the only way to make stuff taste good

CarefreeMe · 26/11/2022 12:12

I’d love to taste your food OP as I imagine you can’t cook either.

paintitallover · 26/11/2022 12:17

What do you mean by "can't cook"? Can you give examples?

FlissyPaps · 26/11/2022 12:19

I bet you cook plain chicken with no seasoning and eat dry lettuce and a few cherry tomatoes with no dressing.

That often happens to us where we end up disappointed in recommended restaurants but I have always felt that’s because DH is very good and the bar is set very high.

But the least you should be able to expect is not overly salty nor overcooked, dry food and having some flavour or else what’s the point.

OP seems the type to spend 4 1/2 hours and £45 cooking a Gordon Ramsey recipe which doesn't even taste very nice and then leave the many, many dishes for their spouse to clean up. And then tell everyone what a wonderful cook they are even though they only cook once every 3 months.

That’s the beauty of the internet isn’t it? You can claim whatever you like in the full knowledge you’ll never have to back it up.

I like to think she’s swigging a can of lilt halfway through a sharing bag of knock off wotsits.

Lizzy1980 · 26/11/2022 12:36

Obviously my attempt at humour was as crap as my cookery skills. My courgette/mushroom mush comment was a sarcastic response to the OP initial comment

I'm not sure why you keep referring to your mother but those things are very easy to do. I'm sure there are lots of British people who avoid supermarket produce and prepare home grown, prepared and cooked food.
