To think disposable vapes should be banned?

Environmentally they are terrible and people all too often just chuck them on the floor.
they have lithium ion batteries which are usually for rechargeable devices and such a waste and terrible for the environment having those harmful chemicals just chucked in bins by the thousands every day. I see them smashed up on the floor all the time where I live and I can't help but think they shouldn't be allowed to sell something like that as disposable.

I hate seeing fag nubs all over the floor more to be honest !

InBlue · 30/11/2022 14:58

I do think they should be banned.

They’re very addictive (because they are GREAT, urgh) and hard to quit… so easy to restart. So easy to sit and puff away at your desk etc. Different from the inconvenience of going outside for a smoke.

They appeal to kids/teens with the bright colours and flavours.

The environmental aspect is dreadful.

I don’t believe they are only used as stop-smoking aids.

I think non-disposable vapes should continue to be available, and prescribed for cigarette smokers who want to quit etc.

There’s nothing positive about the disposable ones, apart from for the people making money off of them.

Ialwayswannasometimes · 30/11/2022 14:58

Well yeah but they're not dangerous, lithium ion batteries are really dangerous- if they're broken/pierced they react with the air and set on fire, and release hydrogen fluoride which is about the most poisonous substance to exist.
vapes fine- reusable ones just not elf bars etc that are designed to be single use, it's so wasteful.

OhmygodDont · 30/11/2022 15:01

Loads smashed up by local teenagers here. Apparently one school has their own vape dealer. I’d prefer fags tbh at least I could catch my kid at that it stinks.

This is just a new way of getting kids addicted to things.

Goodread1 · 21/05/2023 05:18

However period poverty is can be a issue, so their should carry on having designated period poverty places of point, in Supermarkets and council hub like mine ect in which affordable low expense reusable pads are sold, and or free ones if possible can be given out too.

Goodread1 · 21/05/2023 05:19

Oops wrong post L.o.l 😀

Appalonia · 21/05/2023 05:32

I'm a vaper myself and I completely agree with you for all the reasons above. Problem is, they've become so popular and convenient , they've taken over from the regular electronic vapes and my local shop doesn't sell the vape juices anymore, just the disposable ones.

Rainbowqueeen · 21/05/2023 06:24

About the happen in Australia. Vapes will only be available by prescription as a stop smoking aid.

Summerhillsquare · 21/05/2023 07:52

Totally agree. A rechargeable device can last many years, so the environmental and cash cost per use is miniscule in comparison. Our convenience capitalist culture is killing us.

ButterCrackers · 21/05/2023 07:55

They need to be banned for health and environment reasons.

DustyLee123 · 21/05/2023 07:56

They should be banned full stop.

DanglingMod · 21/05/2023 07:56

Who would prefer to see plastic and batteries thrown away than a bit of paper and tobacco which is biodegradable? That's just a daft comment.

I wish vapes were only available on prescription as suggested above. They are an absolute scourge in schools now, with a huge percentage of teenagers affected, skiving lessons to go to toilets to vape, angry and aggressive when they can't vape. They are certainly nowhere near the amazing "stop smoking" product they were first touted as being, let alone the awful environmental impact.

Howmanysleepsnow · 21/05/2023 07:57

A lot of them are banned already. The small ones (600 puff) are legal but the bigger ones that 90% of people round here have aren’t. The problem is, shops still sell them illegally and trading standards just aren’t focused on stopping them. The same shops are often the ones also happy to sell to kids in school uniforms.

Brilliant. Let's hope we follow suit!

how likely is it?

How much money does the Govt get from them??

@DanglingMod I agree I'd rather the cig butts than discarded vapes BUT cig butts have filters in them, which technically are biodegradable, but take about 100 years.

Agree wholeheartedly with the rest.

@Howmanysleepsnow
what's the age restriction for the 'small' ones?

I couldn't possibly tell which the local teens use, they're just a large cloud with lots of school shoes 🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️

but the local shops obviously sell then to school kids.

AnnWithoutAnnie · 21/05/2023 08:13

The adults I know originally used them to help stop smoking, but ALL if them are vaping months/years later. They love the 'habit' (holding the vape, having it on them, something to do etc) love the flavours/smells, and blending them).

I'd be 'ok' with flavourless ones on prescription to help stop smoking. Limited time.

notsayingmuch · 21/05/2023 08:47

I pick up between 4 and 6 each week when I litter-pick in the bushes along the road the kids walk to our local secondary. Goodness knows where the rest go. I put them into the recycling bin we have here but I expect there are hundreds just flung into the hedges.

They’d be pointless as an aid to stop smoking without any flavour though.

I don’t disagree with the reasons people think they should be banned btw, but... I’d still be smoking cigarettes without them.

I was a 20+ a day smoker for over 30 years, it’s taken me months to find a reusable vape that’s as good as disposables, without disposables I would have gone back on to cigarettes before I found one to be dead honest.

They are horrible for the environment, I think it’s a huge issue that teenagers who would never have smoked are vaping. But, they are the only product I’ve ever found that replaces smoking.

@tabulahrasa

thanks for your reply. Maybe as a 'never smoked' I just don't understand?! I'm curious..

I'm glad they've helped you to stop smoking.

I guess I meant 'fun flavours' - who needs 'popcorn' 'candy floss' other than kids? Did you search out 'fun flavours'? Could they not have been 'cigarette' flavoured?

my cousin had/has a cupboard full
of flavours and loved/loves mixing them etc.(haven't seen him in ages)

He's vaped for years now, it's stopped him smoking cigarettes, but is it any better for you?

In what way are the disposables better than the ones you recharge?

Do you intend to stop vaping?

Does the smell make you hungry? My neighbour smokes & it smells like pancakes! It makes me want pancakes!! 😂

I agree about "fun" flavours like popcorn/candy floss/birthday cake, I think those are transparently marketed at kids, and they're much worse for your lungs as well. In terms of helping adults give up smoking though, I've found that only menthol gives me a comparable "chest hit" (sorry, I know it's gross) to cigarettes and really keeps the cravings at bay.

Completely agree with OP that the disposable ones need to be banned. They are environmentally disastrous and they are VERY popular with teenagers. There is a role for vaping, though, in helping adult smokers get off cigarettes - it would be a shame if the whole thing was banned, for that reason.

LeevMarie · 22/05/2023 15:14

I vape and I'm inclined to agree about the disposable ones. The most idiotic thing I regularly see is people chucking them in the cigarette bins outside my local pub. Flammable substance and partially lit cigs - what could possibly go wrong?!

Those who are claiming to want them banned because of the health risks may do well to remember that my health is none of your business.

tabulahrasa · 22/05/2023 15:29

@AnnWithoutAnnie

There are tobacco flavoured ones... I found them... not so great, the issue is, that while they taste a bit like cigarettes, it’s also not, meaning you feel like you still miss the cigarette.

It’s not just about nicotine when you smoke, it’s the flavour, the way it hits your throat, it’s an adjustment even to switch brands of cigarette because they just don’t hit right.

So to start with no, I was avoiding the “fun” flavours because I was trying to replace cigarettes, but, tobacco flavours are hard to get, not really like tobacco and I ended up with ones with not enough nicotine in to switch from being a fairly heavy smoker.

So I was buying just whatever was easiest to get to try them and it turned out that I like the what I thought would be bizarre flavours.

The refillable ones either didn’t give enough vapour or didn’t give enough flavour - I have found one now that works for me, but it has taken me a fairly long time.

Yes the consensus seems to be that it’s better for you than smoking, nothing at all would be best obviously, but vaping is better than smoking.

Tbh, I have no clue if I’ll stop vaping, I sort of didn’t really plan to stop smoking 😂 just decided to try it and see what happened without actually really fully deciding.

No, they don’t make me hungry 😂 nicotine is an appetite suppressant apparently, though I can’t say I’ve ever noticed that.

I think the flavours are absolutely aimed at kids, I happen to have a kids taste in things 😐😂 but I was talking to some friends yesterday who smoke and it’s the sweet flavours that put them off switching, so I think there’s a definite market for decent tobacco flavoured ones for smokers to switch over to.

Nat6999 · 22/05/2023 15:46

I vape but use a traditional mod & tank set up, I can't understand why anyone uses disposable ones, they don't last & in the long run cost more.

To get a decent hit of flavour & vapour you need one with larger size coils, mine are over 1cm wide & 1.5cm deep, you may find that multi chamber coils work better for you, I use Freemax Mesh pro tank & coils & a 510 drip tip, I also use .15 ohm coils which mean I can lower the wattage on my mod.
