AIBU to take the upgrade?

Wanted to ask the MN view on this.
Going on a long haul for a special birthday next year with dh and kids (19 &16) We are flying premium economy.
We’ve been contacted by the airline to say there are 2 business class seats available for a very reasonable price to upgrade.
My AIBU is, do me and dh take the seats? Obviously the kids would be still in PE, but we could nip back and check on them regularly and there will be WiFi on the flight so we could WhatsApp. For info, They wouldn’t be interested or would like the food or wine in Business Class and would spend most of the flight plugged in watching movies not talking to us anyway!
One of us thinks we should go for it, the kids will be absolutely fine as they are older teenagers,, the other thinks it isn’t fair on them and we should all fly together.
I’d be interested to hear views for and against going for the upgrade…
We haven’t broached it with them yet…

God yes

AuntieMarys · 24/11/2022 18:36

Do it

WildOats5678 · 24/11/2022 18:36

Take the upgrade! The kids won’t even notice if you’re not there as they’ll be busy watching things/eating/sleeping.

Fedupofballs · 24/11/2022 18:37

Do it!

HairyMcLarie · 24/11/2022 18:37

I wouldn't think twice about upgrading. They are adults. As long as they don't think they can come up to Business class to see you.

BritWifeInUSA · 24/11/2022 18:38

By the time you’ve asked everyone on here those seats will be gone. You won’t be the only ones who “got a call from the airline”.

Absolutely take the upgrade and enjoy

Fedupofballs · 24/11/2022 18:38

Also don’t spend much time thinking if it’s a good price as the opportunity might be gone.

StonwEd · 24/11/2022 18:38

This shouldn't even be up for discussion, I'd have replied yes to it immediately. Even if they were 9 and 6 I'd consider it (joke!)

GnomeDePlume · 24/11/2022 18:39

Take the upgrade.

I seem to remember reading that Gordon Ramsey's DCs travel in economy. His view is that they need to not take a luxury lifestyle for granted.

1dontunderstand · 24/11/2022 18:39

take the upgrade!

babyjellyfish · 24/11/2022 18:40

Upgrade!

Your kids aren't even really kids anymore.

MrsMitford3 · 24/11/2022 18:42

Take the upgrade all day every day.

I would think even sitting in premium economy would be a treat for your kids.
At that age they could be travelling economy on their own.
Don't give it another thought!

have a great time!

Mybestyear · 24/11/2022 18:42

Take the upgrade!!! I’ve been fortunate to fly business class with work a few times (long haul) and it is fantastic. Just being able to lie down and stretch out makes the flight so much better. The only down side is flying economy sucks after you’ve had business .

be aware though that you will likely board before your DC and wait in a different queue but they should be able to deal with that at their age.

last time I did it, DH and DS came to the city I was working in for a few days and we flew back together with them in economy. The cabin crew let me swap with DS so he got to sit In business class for half the flight. He thought it was quite cool but as you say, he wasn’t interested in going for s sleep snd doesn’t drink alcohol so a bit wasted on him

RightBackAtYa · 24/11/2022 18:42

I wouldn't think twice about it , your children will probably relish traveling 'alone"
Hope you have a lovely time

WOPTF · 24/11/2022 18:43

Do it.

Shunkleisshiny · 24/11/2022 18:44

Take the upgrade, especially with the special birthday AND long haul.

rookiemere · 24/11/2022 18:45

Yes do it now before they get sold out

chickidychick · 24/11/2022 18:47

As they are adults now I say yes

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 24/11/2022 18:49

With kids at that age. Do it!

Im sure they’ll be quite happy, and they’re in PE which is a treat anyway.

Livinginanotherworld · 24/11/2022 18:54

Bloody hell, don’t even think about it, yes ! Your kids are not little.

Thewolvesarerunningagain · 24/11/2022 18:56

I'd take it in a heartbeat with kids that age

Fleabigg · 24/11/2022 18:56

Take it! The kids are basically adults (well one of them is) so I think going back to check on them “regularly” as suggested is OTT.

God yes, I’d be very tempted with my 18m old!! 😂

Firen · 24/11/2022 18:58

I think they’d love being on their own. I’d have loved any opportunity to feel more ‘grown up’ at that age. It’s not like they’re going to run off anywhere!
