Throwing red flags in straight away OLD

shakeitoffshakeacocktail · 24/11/2022 16:40

My profile has a prompt

Green flags I look for:
(My answer) can talk about current affairs and has read a book in the last 12 months

So I got a match who replied with

'I'm currently reading Jordan Petersons 12 rules of life'

WOW!! Really what would you reply to that!

Hypothetical as obviously blocked him!
Was I being unreasonable 😂

OP posts:
Swissnotswiss · 24/11/2022 16:43

Well I've read it too so I wouldn't block him. Could make for interesting conversations- why not?

TheCrab9 · 24/11/2022 16:44

Its a book? You sound like judgmental snob

Itloggedmeoutagain · 24/11/2022 16:45

Maybe you should have a list of what you feel is acceptable so you can judge them accordingly

He's had a lucky escape.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 24/11/2022 16:58

You blocked him for answering your prompt?

Why?

Isittrueornot · 24/11/2022 17:00

You’re the red flag

Iwritethissittinginthekitchensink · 24/11/2022 17:02

Huh? Why did you block him? Even if you have some objection to the book or Jordan Peterson, he never said he loved it or agreed with it!

PortiasBiscuit · 24/11/2022 17:03

I love the way people on here take their prompt from the first response and then just pile in.. it’s hilarious!
As long as you’re not on the receiving end.. OP?

Daisybuttercup12345 · 24/11/2022 17:04

You sound very strange.

Hoolihan · 24/11/2022 17:04

I agree with you OP. Massive red flag.

OnlyFannys · 24/11/2022 17:06

Never heard of it, what's wrong with it? I'd probably get blocked too for my ignorance

BiscuitLover3678 · 24/11/2022 17:06

I can’t believe mumsnet followers are defending him…

MistyGreenAndBlue · 24/11/2022 17:07

Maybe he was joking

shakeitoffshakeacocktail · 24/11/2022 17:09

It would be a shit joke and I'm not for defending myself or my views.

I couldn't see myself with someone who could give money to Jordan Peterson or spend their valuable time reading his drivel!

And I certainly value my time too much to defend MY views against the man

OP posts:
SoapMactavish · 24/11/2022 17:11

He said he read it. Didn't say he agreed with any of it though, did he?

Sometimes it is worth listening to the other side to understand just how and why they are wrong. Most people who are atheists have actually read the bible. I'd be more worried about someone who said they disagreed with Jordan Peterson based purely on the opinion of randoms on the Internet.

Underanothersky · 24/11/2022 17:13

I mean, it depends what he thought of it doesn't it?

ChocolateCakeYum · 24/11/2022 17:14

You'd hate my bookshelves / me then. I read all sorts, with all sorts of views and opinions, even if I don't hold those views and opinions myself. I also have a shit ton of books on serial killers, doesn't make me a closet murderer.

If that person had said "I'm reading JP and I agree with everything he says" then yes, red flags and back away. But just for reading it? Bit of an overreaction on your part. Could've been an interesting opening for a discussion, and enabled you to make a proper value judgement on that persons character.

debwong · 24/11/2022 17:15

So you actually meant: "can talk about current affairs and has read a book that I approve of in the last 12 months"

Yes, he had a lucky escape.

Bemyclementine · 24/11/2022 17:18

I'd have no clue what it was so, I don't know...

ShellsOnTheBeach · 24/11/2022 17:18

It's not the fact that he has read it, but the fact that he chose to tell tge OP about THIS particular book as one he'd read in the past 12 months. I mean what could have been his motivations...

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 24/11/2022 17:22

I mean what could have been his motivations...

It was the most recent book he'd read?

KnackeredHag · 24/11/2022 17:33

YABU for having a ‘prompt’ in your profile!

Getoff · 24/11/2022 17:35

And I certainly value my time too much to defend MY views against the man

Almost everyone who is against Jordan Peterson is wrong about the views they attribute to him. It nearly always turns out that they've not got their understanding from listening or reading his own words, but indirectly via a third party.

This even applies to people interviewing him on National TV, see the Cathy Newman interview on Youtube. It's hilarious. Every single question in an extensive interview was her putting words into his mouth that he did not say, then him pointing out that's not what he thinks or has said. We don't learn a single thing about what he believes, because the whole interview is her trying to pin things on him that she (presumably) wants to go on and attack him for.

CarefreeMe · 24/11/2022 17:36

So you actually meant: "can talk about current affairs and has read a book that I approve of in the last 12 months"

Yes, he had a lucky escape.

I agree!

I also think the current affairs would also need to be in OP’s approval and not just general current affairs.

I am an avid reader and love books but I think if an OLD asked me what books I read as a judgement of my character then I’d block him straight.

  1. he’d sound boring as hell

  2. I read crime and thriller books - which would have him running for the hills if he thought they were a representation of my personality.

I know many couples where one reads a lot and the other one doesn’t read at all.

Getoff · 24/11/2022 17:37

I haven't read the book. Please someone tell me what's wrong with it?

I'm surprised OP has read it, given how much she hates him. Maybe it's what's in it that has made her feel so strongly about him?
