To think travellers should be weighed WITH their luggage when travelling.

I'm prepared for backlash.

I was charged excess for my hand luggage as it was over a certain weight- that's absolutely fine. The combined total weight for myself and my cabin baggage was approx 69 kg. My friend wasn't charged because their luggage wasn't overweight yet the combined total for them and their luggage was over 90kg. My friend joked about how unfair it was.

Surely it would be fairer to use the combined weigh of traveller and cabin luggage to determine and excess fees due?

This is very goady. Everyone has a right to travel in a seat that is safe for them. Its far easier from a business point of view to have a set charge per person than fuck about weighing everyone.
People forget that some sports people are, depending on the sport they do are larger and weigh more than the average but no one is demanding they pay more for the same service.
Maybe you should be thinking about solving actual problems, and weigh your luggage before you leave.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 24/11/2022 19:18

Unfortunately, this would probably involve both sex discrimination and discrimination on the basis of race. Men are taller than women so tend to be heavier. The top 10 tallest countries in the world are all European i.e. predominantly white people whereas the shortest countries are in Asia or South America.

Other than that great idea 😂😂

I agree, OP. I'm a petite woman who travels light yet pays same fare as heavy person with lap child, giant pushchair, large onboard bag. It's ridiculous.

Weight is the biggest variable in the cost of operating an aircraft. Passengers should pay accordingly.

Weight is nowhere near one of the biggest operating costs for an airline. The biggest costs are the leasing of the aircraft, staff and landing fees. Fuel is obviously a big cost, but the cost difference in fuel consumption between flying a plane load of skinny minnies versus a plane load of fattypuffs isn't nearly as big as you seem to hope think.

jevoudrais · 24/11/2022 19:37

Hardly fair on me who is 70kgs! And I'm not overweight, I'm 5'9". I didn't choose to be tall though, and many people don't 'choose' to be obese either.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 24/11/2022 19:38

Ohh we could have a pregnant woman surcharge too - that would add another level of discrimination to sex and race.

AlwaysLatte · 24/11/2022 19:58

A short fat person going somewhere for a weekend vs a tall thin one going for a fortnight. Unless you want to weigh people and try to dissect the reasons for their weight (and paying extra for your seat for that) you're best off letting the airlines do what they do and average it all out.

AlwaysLatte · 24/11/2022 20:02

I'm 49kg and I've often thought this, OP. I think smaller-sized clothes should be cheaper too, as they use less fabric and less petrol etc to transport them due to being smaller and lighter. I also think I should be exempt from the sugar tax.
But if you eat less sugar you'll be paying less, anyway. That's how tax works...?

Molz10 · 24/11/2022 20:04

I think weighing people is a bit unfair based on heights and body shapes etc.
I think there should be a chair you have to fit into to be able to travel. The same as if your hand luggage doesn’t fit in the cage at check in you have to check it onto the flight.
If you don’t fit in the chair you should be required to pay for a second or not travel. It’s not fair on other travellers to be hanging over into their space.

BCBird · 24/11/2022 20:05

Oh dear looks like I won't be going abroad for a while if they introduce your idea- I'm a big bird and can't pack lightly.😨😂

BadNomad · 24/11/2022 20:10

No. It isn't fair to charge someone more for being tall.

This is actually a really sensible idea, in the same vein as height / weight restrictions at places like theme parks. It’d have to be discreet though.

My colleague is really fat and needs a seatbelt extender, she knows she is really fat and will need to tuck her flab under the arm rests and has zero chance of moving until everyone has disembarked. She buys two seats so she’s not inflicting her fatness on others. She doesn’t care that she’s fat, she loves food. Her words, not mine.

do you think there will come a time when 2 seats are not enough?

Changemaname1 · 24/11/2022 21:20

Some airlines do actually ask you to buy an extra seat if you cannot fit in one without extending so many inches over the arm rest

I feel bad it’s a thing in one way as people could feel self conscious but at the same time - flying long haul and having to angle my body awkwardly because the person next to me is a third of the way into my already uncomfortable and expensive seat for 11 hours , yeh fuck that .

Seeing as you're plainly not using your brain here, OP, maybe you could have cut your head off.

Hopefully not, she’s always been about this size. She flies to Ireland a lot to see family so it’s cheap as chips to buy an extra seat. Never known her go on holiday holiday, though.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 24/11/2022 22:05

I am tempted by this idea just because for once it would favour women (in general) rather than me (in general).

But then I suppose it would be fair to give those who’d paid more more space. Which would ruin my “I’ve paid the same for my seat as you buddy” argument to man spreaders. So on balance no.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 24/11/2022 22:05

Men not me

I do agree with this as I would not cope if someone was spilling into my seat.

I am both claustrophobic and have a bad back though.

Shutthegatepeter · 24/11/2022 22:10

So the fatter you are, the less clothes you can the with you?! 😂😂😂

I think the word you were looking for is ‘tents’. I’m currently tucked up in bed sporting a 2 man with an awning. Cushy.

Height/weight on theme parks is because you will probably die if you don't fit in the seats. And a body is different to a suitcase

Pleasepleasepleaseno · 24/11/2022 22:48

I'd bloody love it if people who can't fit into a standard size seat had to pay for a second one. There's nothing worse than being squished on a longhaul flight by the person next to you taking up half your seat. I'm claustrophobic. Its unbearable and unfair. I once had a woman who put the arm rest up as soon as she could just so that she could spill over onto my seat because she really couldn't fit in hers. How is that my bloody problem?

OMG12 · 24/11/2022 22:50

Aren’t weight limits for hand luggage more to do with where they are stored and in case they fall out of overhead lockers.

ReneBumsWombats · 24/11/2022 22:52

Some airlines will require that you pay for the second seat if you don't fit in one, but they'll refund the second seat if the plane isn't full. I think that's a fair solution.
