To think travellers should be weighed WITH their luggage when travelling.

I'm prepared for backlash.

I was charged excess for my hand luggage as it was over a certain weight- that's absolutely fine. The combined total weight for myself and my cabin baggage was approx 69 kg. My friend wasn't charged because their luggage wasn't overweight yet the combined total for them and their luggage was over 90kg. My friend joked about how unfair it was.

Surely it would be fairer to use the combined weigh of traveller and cabin luggage to determine and excess fees due?

@Bakergram maybe pack less judgy knickers and you luggage may be lighter?

Mylittlesandwich · 26/11/2022 07:57

Will we need to bring our medical records then? I assume some kind of discount if our grotesque fatness is caused by a medical condition rather than because we don't know when to stop forcing cake in our mouths? Or do you just want the information on my passport? Does pregnancy count or are we going down the US route and charging the foetus for its own ticket? Do we encourage eating disorders as a way to get a cheaper ticket on a plane? Crash dieting for months so you can fly long haul for less? What absolute twaddle.

Dalekjastninerels · 26/11/2022 09:28

OP

Maybe you should have weighed yourself and luggage at home. Your tiny clothes that fit your itty- bitty waist and spindly limbs can't take up too much space.

Just a suggestion Smile

Also why were you in excess? Did you bring your whole wardrobe?

Conkersareback · 26/11/2022 07:47

@Mojoj if people don't fit in a normal seat, how do they fly now?

They encroach on the person in the adjacent seat.

I once had a very painful stiff neck for three weeks after spending one five-hour flight twisted sideways and unable to rest against the seat back because the other person was spilling so far into my space. It's abhorrent.

Producing medical exception isn’t hard. I travel with needles and medication in hand luggage. I have a hospital issue letter. I produce it at security. It’s printed off once a year so the date stays relevant. No big deal.

Fascinated to know which airline this is OP? I've never had medical kit with a letter put into my hand luggage allowance, its always been treated separately.

BTW, in the earlier days of commercial air travel people were weighed with luggage on giant scales. It was scrapped for many reasons, but mainly because it was a net business cost rather than saving.

Hence the suggestions that different sized seats should be offered.

Smaller seats for small people and children (double-stacked if possible for more efficient use of space). Then they could get a discount (don't children usually go full-fare once they're twelve?)

I agree that different seating classes would be nice. Particularly as narrow body aircraft e.g A320series and 737s are travelling to further destinations than previously, including transatlantic. Unfortunately airline management seem to believe that people wouldn't pay 50-100% more for more space (width) on the flight. So if you can't fit in one seat you must buy another.
The airlines need simplicity in operation, an aircraft with bigger seats has less capacity overall so you couldn't swap it onto a flight with a full load. I don't think offering smaller seats which can't fit 90% of adults in would be viable. Although it could be fun to have a kids' section at the back behind a sound proof bulkhead! Well not fun for the cabin crew.

@IcedPurple "you don't choose your weight"

Eh?!?

You choose your diet and exercise regime which heavily impacts your weight. Or at least, I do! If I eat differently I gain or lose weight accordingly. There might be a small number of people who that doesn't apply to (for medical reasons) but the vast majority of us do choose our weight indirectly through lifestyle choices.

Only to an extent. If I was the same BMI as I am at 5'10 but I was 5'1 instead then I'd weigh 17.6kg less, which is quite a hefty baggage allowance!

Not this goady old twaddle again.

If you want to charge them per kg then they should be allocated a seat proportionate to the cost/weight.

So there should be different sized seats, and those who pay more should get nice wide seats Grin

Yes it’s called business class….

So OP marries The Rock and they fly off on honeymoon, but have to sit at opposite ends of the plane, and op ends up with some random kids of fat parents?

Fannyann0 · 26/11/2022 06:47

@DdraigGoch children go full fare once they are 2 years old and over. Me and DS have been travelling since he was 18months.... I pay full fare for him.

It might depend upon the airline. With some they go at 75% fare until 12.

Any airline I’ve traveled with - KLM, BA, EasyJet and Jet2 recently.

I wasn’t saying it was part of the allowance (although for ease I do keep it in hand luggage) just that I travel with medical exception and it’s not hard to have a letter produced.

Weight isn’t judgy, it’s a fact.

It’s when you use it to penalise people for things that are out of their control.
you can pack your suitcase easily within a range of weight. You can’t adapt to weight so easily

Do you think those like me that are fatty is because we don’t eat healthy and sit on our fat arses ? You should learn that are many illnesses that affect your weight, that your genetics , even how much you earn can affect your weight. So stop judging others just because at your eyes we are not the perfect model

I'm fascinated because as I said - in this situation the medical kit I was carrying (with letter) was not included in my hand luggage allowance.

DH also has a medical device with a letter and has also never been told that it has to be included in his hand luggage allowance.

Perhaps they just had a problem with you.

PlentyO · 26/11/2022 19:45

Yanbu it's the fair way to do it. There should be a weighing scale when people get on buses too. I'm tired of having a bumpy journey because someone plus size is sitting over the wheel arch.

Sorry- I've not been clear. The medical kit was not part of the original post. I used it as an example to somebody regarding flying with medical exemption.

I frequently fly with needles and medication that requires a covering letter to allow it in my hand luggage- basically to allow me to carry needles on board. I tend to carry the cool bag/needles in my hand luggage but wouldn't imagine it is included in the weight/size limit. It's certainly never been an issue at all.

So the bus stops, you get weighted and then you get a designated seat based on weight? Good luck when 30 school kids are getting on our telling Mary she can't sit at the front cos she's the wrong weight or ever actually getting anywhere 😂😂😂😂😂

SleepingStandingUp · 27/11/2022 13:19

Can superior explain it please.

I weight 120kg, Bob weighs 240kg, Larry weights 60kg. How much luggage do each of us get?

Lilgamesh2 · 27/11/2022 14:05

@EasterIssland excuses excuses...

Witchcraftandhokum · 27/11/2022 14:35

I definitely don't want a rebate!

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 27/11/2022 22:09

No they shouldn't.

But if they are big enough to require more space then they should buy an extra seat.

Yes, let's far shame half the population....possibly a bit more fair, definitely very unkind!
