To tell you how proud I am of my Dad today

Today, my Dad stopped his lorry to pull a suicidal 22 year old over the safety barrier of a bridge and laid on him until police and ambulance arrived.

I saw him a few hours after and he was very shaky and emotional (my big lorry driving beer loving football mad Dad, emotional?!).

I had 2 suicide attempts about 6 years ago and I ended up in a psychiatric unit where he was my biggest supporter and drove the 100 mile round trip to be with me every single weekend then came to pick me up at discharge and had me live with him until I was back on my feet and had received the help I needed.

I'm so proud of him ♥️

What an awesome Dad xx

PlacidPenelope · 23/11/2022 22:43

Just when you start to lose all faith in humanity, kindness and goodness along comes your dad to restore that faith. There are good people in this world who do things selflessly and your dad is one of them @elle6 no wonder you are proud.

TinaTeaspoons · 23/11/2022 22:43

Also made me cry.
Such a special person to help a stranger in their darkest hour. Wish more were like him.

KateMcCallister · 23/11/2022 22:45

Your dad is amazing, I'm so glad he was there ❤️

Muddywaters1 · 23/11/2022 22:46

I don't think anyone will mind if I suggest you give him a big old smooch on the cheek and a hug from all of us for being a hero!

allboysherebutme · 23/11/2022 22:53

Your Dad sounds awesome. A kind soul. Both with you and with the stranger he helped today. I bet he's going to be a wonderful Granddad too!

WhMyNm · 23/11/2022 23:04

I think me having his first grandchild next year must be turning him a little soft in his old age 🤗

@Fluffygoon one of the things that shocked him most was the people who must of seen and drove past. He got quite tearful at that. He kept saying how could you turn a blind eye to that.

I hope the man is getting help now 🙏🏻

What an amazing Grandad s/he will have

Just wow!

🦸‍♂️

Your dad sounds amazing and then on top of that he has saved a life and all the suffering that suicide causes.
Glad you are so proud of this Prince amongst men.

@SirGawain I meant 10 years ago he would of brushed it off like it was a normal every day thing what he did but seeing him emotional and shaky was something new for me x

How wonderful that your dad did that. Much love to him. And it's so great to hear that you are doing well.

As the mum of a teen who has made three unsuccessful attempts to take their life this year, just be aware that today might have brought back to him some of the trauma he experienced when you were so poorly. I don't know if there is someone professional he can talk to, but it might be good for him to chat through his emotions when he is ready. We're not completely out of the woods yet, but it doesn't take much to bring back some pretty horrible memories for me, and your father's wonderful actions today might have awakened some sad things for him.

Newtrix · 23/11/2022 23:54

Oh wow! This made me cry, what an incredible man your Dad is.

1dayatatime · 23/11/2022 23:56

@elle6

Your dad could have easily just driven past, many would, he was probably busy and it would have been easier not to stop. BUT he did stop and he did make a difference.

Without your wonderful Dad's actions there would likely be a mother and father with broken hearts, a brother or sister torn apart or even a wife and young children whose lives would have changed forever.

It may seem to your Dad that he did a small simple thing he did but the impact of his actions goes way beyond one person.

You have a truly amazing father and damn right you should be proud of him as is everyone on this post.

GSMH · 24/11/2022 00:05

Also I'm so glad you didn't complete your attempts and you have an amazing life, congratulations on your baby and having a bloody awesome hero for a dad ❤️ xx

rubydoobydoo · 24/11/2022 00:28

Your dad sounds amazing! Really hope both he and the person he helped are OK.

I speak to a lot of suicidal people as part of my job and it's upsetting - one in particular really stuck with me though, not just because he was (I think) the only one who seemed to genuinely want to die but when I was speaking with him it soon became clear that nothing I could say would change this at all. I even started wondering whilst talking to him if trying to save him was actually the humane option. The conversation affected me for years after in a way others haven't.

So please keep giving your lovely dad plenty of hugs just in case this is like that for him!

( My one is still alive - I still remember his name years later and looked him up on Facebook and he has new photos with his daughter who I was trying to get him to talk about at the time - it made my heart very happy and I really hope he's in a much happier place now!)

Freshmind001 · 24/11/2022 00:40

A true hero.

Needhelp101 · 24/11/2022 01:17

Op, I wish to God that there had been someone like your amazing Dad at the train station where my best friend took his own life.

OP's Dad, today you saved more than a few people from terrible pain ❤️‍🩹

Sandinmyknickers · 24/11/2022 07:57

This is amazing and so glad he was able to do that.
I unfortunately have been in your dad's position and although I tried my best, was too late. I replay it so often and although I know there was nothing more I could have done, I always find myself questioning "what ifs" about my day that day..."what if I'd not dilly dallied in my work lobby, I would have been there a few mins earlier..." etc.
