To tell you how proud I am of my Dad today

Today, my Dad stopped his lorry to pull a suicidal 22 year old over the safety barrier of a bridge and laid on him until police and ambulance arrived.

I saw him a few hours after and he was very shaky and emotional (my big lorry driving beer loving football mad Dad, emotional?!).

I had 2 suicide attempts about 6 years ago and I ended up in a psychiatric unit where he was my biggest supporter and drove the 100 mile round trip to be with me every single weekend then came to pick me up at discharge and had me live with him until I was back on my feet and had received the help I needed.

I'm so proud of him ♥️

This gave me goosebumps reading it, well done to your dad ❤

Thank you all and apologies OP as I wasn't intending to take emphasis away from your pride in your Dad which is wholly justified. It is not easy at all to be around someone who is intending this action; it's easy to turn a blind eye, he should be proud of himself. I hope the person on the bridge recovers. I am glad that they stayed.

Well done to your dad. Amazing
man.

Well done your Dad ❤

A friend of mine is an actor. He made a film recently about suicide and quoted this: "300 people have thrown themselves off the Golden Gate Bridge. Only 30 have survived. All 30 said that as soon as they left the bridge, they regretted doing so"

This is what I am thinking. There are so many questions about the man himself but this might not be the outcome he wanted sadly 😟

Gosh, that's so sad @MistletoeMouse

Well done op's dad.

I'm not surprised that you are proud of him after reading that. I'm proud of him and I don't even know him!

Not all heroes wear capes… some drive big lorries. God bless your dad. He saved a life and there is a family out there eternally grateful to him. He is a good man.

Onebrokentoe · 23/11/2022 22:22

Your dad is awesome!!

heartbroken22 · 23/11/2022 22:22

What a lovely dad. I'm bawling my eyes out.

Emelene · 23/11/2022 22:27

That’s amazing. You should be so proud. Even more touching given what you and your family have overcome. Congratulations on the baby. 😊

I’m a psychiatrist in training - not sure I can say it quite right but there are professionals who really care and want to help. I hope that young man is getting good care now.

Motnight · 23/11/2022 22:29

Your dad is fantastic!

Whenisthisgoingtoend · 23/11/2022 22:30

My DH talked a man down from jumping into the Clyde in Glasgow in winter god knows the water temp however must be near freezing.

He was coming back from giving evidence in Court during lunch recess.

The guy told him he couldn’t go on anymore. DH stood below with him and chatted about everything and anything for ages, he thought he’d failed at in life.
Long story short he didn’t jump and sorted his life out and DH regularly meets up with him and have became pals although support different football teams.

Glaswegians will know this can happen.

So glad our dad had the compassion to help this person where many just drove passed unaware or didn’t give row hoots.

elle6 · 23/11/2022 22:31

If it wasn't for my Dad I'd have been homeless when I came out of there as I lost my rented house whilst in hospital as I couldn't pay my bills.

I'm now married and so happy expecting our first baby, I wish I could tell suicidal people that sometimes life has a funny and wonderful way of working out.

Thanks everyone for your lovely messages, I will read some to him when I see him ♥️🙏🏻
