To tell you how proud I am of my Dad today

Today, my Dad stopped his lorry to pull a suicidal 22 year old over the safety barrier of a bridge and laid on him until police and ambulance arrived.

I saw him a few hours after and he was very shaky and emotional (my big lorry driving beer loving football mad Dad, emotional?!).

I had 2 suicide attempts about 6 years ago and I ended up in a psychiatric unit where he was my biggest supporter and drove the 100 mile round trip to be with me every single weekend then came to pick me up at discharge and had me live with him until I was back on my feet and had received the help I needed.

I'm so proud of him ♥️

I needed to see this post tonight. What a brilliant Dad you have ❤️

Mariposista · 23/11/2022 21:46

That poor young man had a guardian angel come to him today in the shape of your Dad. What a credit he is to your family.
Sounds like the sort of man every daughter should have to look up to.
Hope the young man is getting help.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 23/11/2022 21:47

That’s really made me well up.

Your dad is a legend!

That’s really great of your dad. How amazing to give someone the opportunity of another chance when they are at such a low point. Hope the person he’s saved is able to access the help they need. You are justifiably proud of him.

weegiemum · 23/11/2022 21:50

Thankyou from me. My young adult ds was helped off a bridge by a driver 3 years ago. He's now started training to be a nurse. If that guy on his way to work hadn't talked him down, he wouldn't be here to do it. I don't know who that was, so please thank your dad on our behalf xx

WouldUShouldI · 23/11/2022 21:51

❤️

I think me having his first grandchild next year must be turning him a little soft in his old age

That’s not going soft; it takes real courage to do something like that. You are perfectly entitled to be very proud.

elle6 · 23/11/2022 21:55

@SirGawain I meant 10 years ago he would of brushed it off like it was a normal every day thing what he did but seeing him emotional and shaky was something new for me x

My cousin completed suicide 21 years ago. Nobody could have prevented her, it was done in a way that no-one could have seen her. She left behind two small children. The effects are felt to this day. Your father did a brave thing. X

Mogloveseggs · 23/11/2022 21:56

Amazing. Well done to your dad.

elle6 · 23/11/2022 21:57

That's amazing, well done ElleDad 🏆

Just think about the trauma he prevented for so many people.

What a difference your lovely dad has made to another family today OP. You’re quite right to be proud of him 😊
And it sounds like he’s been an amazing presence in your life too 😊 I’m glad you got the help that was needed and are here to enjoy life with your lovely dad ❤️ And congratulations 👶🏻

MistletoeMouse · 23/11/2022 22:01

Well done your Dad ❤

A friend of mine is an actor. He made a film recently about suicide and quoted this: "300 people have thrown themselves off the Golden Gate Bridge. Only 30 have survived. All 30 said that as soon as they left the bridge, they regretted doing so"

Doormatnomore · 23/11/2022 22:01

I was going to say I bet 100 people drove past before him. It wasn’t the dragging him back that saved his life, it was deciding to stop.
Lives can be turned around by someone showing kindness at the right moment.
