There was a fire in my flat today

Sorry posting for traffic. This is going to sound so dramatic because no one was hurt or anything but I just can’t get what happened out of my head!

I’ve constantly posted on MN (under different names) about my mouse issue. I cannot catch the little fuckers at all. I have all sorts of traps in my kitchen but nothing works. I’ve had pest control around maybe 3/4 times since summer and the last time they were here, they claimed to close a massive hole in the wall. I thought okay cool maybe this is finally over. Nope, heard and saw a mouse in my room over the weekend. On Sunday, I had a look at the hole and saw that the mouse had found it’s way through.

I’m rambling sorry! Fast forward to now, pest control came round today. The guy was doing whatever needed to be done under one of the kickboards when I heard a loud bang. Walked to the kitchen to see what happened and there was a massive fire underneath the cupboard. I saw sparks flying and everything. I grabbed both the kids from the living room (7 months & 18 months) and stood outside panicking whilst I called 999. I ran out in such a panic that I didn’t grab coats for the kids or slippers for myself or anything. Luckily my next door neighbour was in so she let me stay at her house with my kids until it was safe to go back in.

Everything ended up being okay as the guy put the fire out before the fire brigade had arrived but I just keep seeing it in my head. It was really scary at the time and I just can’t believe that happened. Thank God the guy was okay and just had a few minor burns on his arm. It could have been so much worse for him. No clue why I’ve typed this on MN but maybe I’ll fell less anxious now that I’ve shared this with people!

PS. I hate the bloody mice

Sending virtual <<hugs>> to you. It must have been really shocking.
It’s good that everyone was okay and you did the right thing not stopping for coats & slippers -it’s what they always taught you during fire drill.
I hope you can relax a bit soon, you’ve had a big shock and it’s only natural you are feeling as you do now Flowers

RambamThankyouMam · 23/11/2022 21:54

What caused the fire? It sounds terrifying!

socialserviceshelpplease · 23/11/2022 21:57

oh dear I hope you're ok. I wonder what caused it.
Well done for not panicking and just getting down to business with regards to keeping your children safe!

It's always more scary when you are in a flat and not ground floor.

x hope all is well, Try to sleep x

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/11/2022 21:58

Sounds really frightening. I'm glad no-one was hurt. Had the mice chewed through wires?

Lj8893 · 23/11/2022 22:00

Completely normal to still feel scared and anxious. You probably will do for a while yet.

Our neighbours car got set alight a while ago (parked next to mine!!) and I still feel anxious about any noises I hear outside at night!

TimeForFika · 23/11/2022 22:04

You did so well to get your kids outside straight away and call 999. Well done you did all the right things. It sounds really scary, look after yourself and be kind to yourself while you process what happened.

DohaDragon · 23/11/2022 22:05

Wow, was the mouse man trying to burn them out?

RhondaD · 23/11/2022 22:07

Arsonist mice?

CanTheMousePLEASEGoToHell · 23/11/2022 22:11

It was a really bizzare experience plus it was so random I couldn’t really believe what happened! I had to give my neighbour a nice box of biscuits to say thank you for her kindness.

So what happened was, the pest control guy (let’s just call him Tom) was doing work underneath the cupboard which is right next to the gas cooker. The cooker was on because I was doing lunch for my toddler. Tom started to spray expanding foam on the hole in the wall and it seems there was a build up of gas within the can which somehow clashed with the heat that was coming out of the oven (I think).

I honestly don’t know how Tom wasn’t seriously injured as most of his body was underneath the cupboard when this happened. I knew something was wrong as I heard him swearing and sounding a bit panicked but I never expected there to be a fire

Thank you for the nice comments guys. I grabbed the kids and went for the front door so quickly that I actually forgot DP was sleeping in the bedroom! He’d heard the loud bang and came running out to see what happened which is good because I really did forget about him🤦‍♀️

@CanTheMousePLEASEGoToHell

Love your username!

Thankfully no one was hurt, perhaps the pest control guy has learned to ask the client not to have the oven on! Great reaction op, you did everything right, the kids needed you more than your dp too. Not stopping for coats was correct

CanTheMousePLEASEGoToHell · 24/11/2022 10:02

@gogohmm thank you. I was at my wit’s end when I last came here to write about the mouse for the 100th time! I didn’t think I reacted that well in the situation so thank you for the reassurance.

And yes 100%. He did say, ‘I know for next time to never have an oven on whilst I’m doing any work.’
